Ree - An ordinary Hin in an Extraordinary place

Ree looks up at the gates of the Friendly Arm Inn and turns to her companion, "Never thought we'd end up back here" She says with a sense of nostalgia in her voice.

It's clear that these two Hin's have been traveling for a long time; yet, the gate has always held a special spot in Ree's heart. "I wonder if anyone we know is still around" She shrugs, unsure if she even has the desire to see old acquaintances.

After a few days of resting and getting their bearings, it was clear that much had changed-- both the lands, the locals, and the general happenings of the area made it feel as if they were foreigners visiting for their first time. For all intents and purposes this was pretty much true. Ree and the other Hin exchanged pleasantries and parted ways, with Ree making her way to the Gullykin eager to see if it had grown with grandeur like the rest of the establishments. Before she knew it, she found herself blending right back into the Hin community, spending her nights in the Cornucopia Tavern and mingling with the locals over countless bottles of Berduskan Dark. She was happy to be spending time with her people once again, being a Hin has never been easy after all, and she has always preferred the company of her own kind. While not an overly paranoid Hin, her many past experiences had taught her to be cautious no matter where she was. It was this natural instinct, her inner voice, that demanded that she always had her eyes on the door and be aware of her surroundings. That trait of hers paid off and allowed her to see him first-- a human carrying various odds and ends proclaiming to be a merchant. Her first thought was, what was he doing all the way up here this late at night? Her second thought, when she realized he had singled her out almost immediately, was that 'this wasn't normal, and something definitely was -not- right'. Her years of experience of working closely with people of all walks of life had reminded her that the best thing to do is remain calm and to be 'just another ordinary Hin'. The man was pleasant enough, and while he was not particularly convincing or persuasive, he had sowed the sense of wonder and intrigue in Ree's little heart by providing her an expensive gift-- as with most Hin's, she was a victim to her heritage and always had a weakness for material things. This interaction was a calling card that someone wanted to meet her, and apparently it was someone she knew. This wasn't a subtle a message, nor a mere suggestion, it was clear that there was an encounter coming that she could not avoid. After their conversation the man got up and departed leaving Ree to her own thoughts. She spent the next few hours drinking wine quietly to herself with thoughts racing through her head. Deep down and in the moment she felt conflicted-- these coming days would be defining for the Hin in both who she was, and what her role was in these lands. After one to many drinks than she should of had, the little Hin finally stumbled back to the room she rented. Whether it was wine insomnia, or her hyper active Hin mind playing games with her head, she laid awake staring at the ceiling and could not stop thinking at what had transpired. Frustrated at not being able to sleep, she began to make little shadow puppets on the walls -- animals she had seen throughout her adventures, willing them to dance about in an entertaining theatre. Slowly but surely her mind started to quiet and she fell into a deep sleep. Ree had thought she could leave the past well enough behind but... Well... the past had different ideas.

Ree encounters an unsavory looking fellow in the Outer City near the Gate. Thinking he looked to be an easy target, she attempted to work her Hin 'magic'. After all was said and done the little Hin walked way a few coins richer proud of her exchange.

Never did she imagine that the "pira-teer" acquaintance she had swindled for coins so long ago would one day find himself tangled up in her ree-diculous adventures. What started as a suggestion became a dare, which somehow evolved into "Wait... are we actually doing this!?!"

While it was no means an easy feat for the duo, and consumed a rather large amount of their supplies, somehow they walked back out of that frozen cave. The dragon, on the other hand, decided to stay behind forever.

While she hadn't seen Ferrick for some time, she held up her end of the bargain and did what she could to assist at Rivers End. She had been cautioned not to 'play hero' nor did she have any desire to do so. Sustaining any sort of lasting injury for something so far from home sounded like an exceptionally poor business decision.

It didn't take long for the defenders to gather and, against her better judgment, she stepped through what very well could have been a one-way portal onto the battlefield.
Image
After a short recap of the situation, and a careful look at those present, she naturally gravitated toward the people she trusted to keep a level head. Standing shoulder to shoulder on the front line was not where a hin belonged. Breaking off to defend the glowing tree alongside Rose and Mathilde however proved to be a far better use of her talents.
Image
The little rogue spent the battle eliminating stragglers, disrupting an unsuspecting goblin ambush and, on more than one occasion, dragging the fallen out of harm's way... you're welcome Michael Dunn, she thought to herself with a faint smirk, as she dragged his wife's unconscious body away from an advancing pack of magically empowered gnolls. She'd have to remember to bill him-- that one cost extra.

While she escaped any serious injuries, and relied on 'hit and run' tactics to their fullest, exhaustion had begun to set into the little hin. Better to leave while her judgment remained she thought to herself, than stay long enough to make a grave mistake. After gathering her belongings and patching herself up for the journey home, she offered one last smile to those she had fought beside before quietly slipping back into the darkness.
Image
Ree had never cared much for fanfare or grand displays under the public eye. It was enough to know she had lived up to her end of the bargain-- someone else could give the heroic speeches that enjoyed standing in the spotlight.

Late one evening, while ordering a glass of Berduskan Dark at the Blushing Mermaid, Ree was surprised when Guido handed her the delivered parchment. Settling into her favorite chair, she leaned back and rocked lazily on its rear legs, carefully reading the letter.
Health and Prosperity to you, Ree

I write this missive in gratitude for your aid at the Battle of River's End against the Cult of the Black Sun. Though there was some minimal destruction your hands aided in keeping it from being far much more. A tremendous feat with the odds that we had to face. I wished to recognize you for your work and hope you know it is not unseen. If there is want to aid in the rebuilding of River's End please contact and I will pass it on to Councilman Kane or inform him of your intent. I greatly thank you once more. Duty Bind, Mercy's Grace and Justice Prevail.

Ever in Service,

Knight-Commander Gaven Arkalis, Triadic Knight and Sword of the Loyal Fury

P. S. Appreciated your work in aiding those by the Tree, a great concern that near cavern was so I thank you for your vigilance.
Slowly a grin spread across her face.

"Guess we did something right this time" she remarked playfully to Sombra, who rested with his head upon his paws while watching the front door. As much as she adored him, her dog wasnt great at conversation.

Ree then held the letter up triumphantly and looked toward the bar.

"Guido! Think I can put it on the wall?" she called out with a mischievous smile.

The barkeep didn't even bother looking up. He simply rolled his eyes, gave a dismissive wave, and muttered "Hins..."

Ree smiled with a big cheeky grin.

"Im taking that as a yes!" she responded obnoxiously, then nodded to herself with confidence before carefully rolling the parchment back up.

While wandering along the Tradeway, Ree came across a small poster nailed to a lamp post outside the Friendly Arm Inn.

"Hmmm... Amnian Festival? Sure, why not!"

Without another thought she hopped aboard the caravan towards Nashkel, arriving just in time for a day full of games, a wonderful performance by Rose Wintertal, and one of her favorite things of all...

Free Drinks!

While she couldn't stay for the entire festival, and failed spectacularly at winning the first competition, a great deal of fun was had! She even found herself meeting a few new faces along the way. Until the next one! The small hin thought to herself before departing-- and next time I'm going to win!

--== The Friendly Arm's (W)inn ==--
Whether it was something in the air that night, or perhaps the drinks, the small Hin was certainly living true to the reputation of her people. Ree and Jax had maintained a small inside agreement that she was -not- allowed to play the slot machine without permission; however, her pleading eyes eventually broke down his defenses and she was allotted "one pull". Naturally, she chose the 50:1 odds and put 10,000 coins down...
...and...

💥

As if the enormous pile of Gold coins didn't portray the scene well enough, the expression written across Jax's face was nothing short of disbelief as he slowly shook his head with a chuckle simply muttering the word "Hins..."
Shortly after her fortuitous win, the two reunited with Khali and Nica for several more "successful" games of cards. With a near perfect evening, Ree proceeded to win round after round, much to the curious ire of her newly found acquaintances.

Even in one such game where Khali, a Red Wizard herself, shuffled the cards using a spectacular display of magic:

Khali Avadurhzaz takes the deck with a clean motion of her hand "Lets ensure the next game is played fairly." She mutters a few words in the power, the deck floating infront of her, swirling about as it shuffles itself-- (moments later) she flourishes a hand, and three cards smoothly flow out from the deck.

Whether Jax and Nica had even noticed the impressive feat of skill amidst their flirtatious eyelock, the little halfling somehow managed to come out ahead yet again.

Naturally, the notion that Ree might somehow be cheating was entertained more than once. Whether mischief truely was in the cards that evening remained rather doubtful... after all, there was one perfectly Ree-sonable explanation for her absurd string of victories...

"We need to go shopping Ree, darling," Jax said to his near constant companion as they sat together once more at the Blushing Mermaid. They had been here for an hour or so already, chatting about nothing in particular when he made his pronouncement. At his words, Ree's face lit up with barely contained glee and her eyes sparkled at him.

"What a great idea Jax Jax!" Before Jax could say anything else, Ree stood up from her chair, quickly draining her nearly empty glass of wine, and moved to rouse Sombra. The large dog was in his usual spot, "guarding" the front door to the Mermaid by taking a nap near it. "Come on Sombra, we're going shopping!"

"Ree, we have to go get--" Jax started, but Ree was already headed for the door, with a still sleepy Sombra following behind.

"I know! If we don't hurry, they might have sold it!"

Jax wasn't sure he wanted to know what "it" was, but he thought it was probably best to ask anyway. "Sold...what?"

"The thing Jax! It was there in the Wide a couple of days ago, but I was trying to be Ree-sponsible--" . At this, Ree cast him a cheeky look, "--so I didn't buy it! But now, I have all this extra money that I won!"

Ree lead the small party out the door and into the courtyard in front of the Mermaid before turning her feet north towards the Wide and starting off with determination in her step.

"Ree, we need to buy clothing from Aello's," Jax said as he trailed behind her. He knew she'd understand what he was referring too.

"I know! Don't worry, it's on the way!" The thoroughly over-excited hin said, never breaking stride.

"It's the...other way," Jax said, hooking his thumb back to the south and shaking his head in exasperation.
Image
Nearly an hour later, the pair were leaving the Wide, Ree with an ear-to-ear smile on her face as she secured several new items in her pack. Jax assumed it must have some kind of enchantment on it to keep all of the random odds and ends that Ree collected.
"So much for Ree-sponsible spending," Jax observed with a small smirk.

"Jax! The man at the tent said the crystal ball Ree-ly worked! And now with this other thing, we'll never run out of spoons again! You should be thanking me!"

"Spoons?" Jax asked, raising an eyebrow.

"You never know when you might need a spoon, Jax," Ree deadpanned as they continued towards Eastway.
Later that night the two returned to the Blushing Mermaid, with poor Jax carrying a large stack of folded clothes while Ree bounced through the door, overly excited to try out her newest toy.

Though they had much work to do that evening... it could wait. After all that walking, a few drinks were certainly in order, and... well... Ree did just buy a crystal ball.

Late one afternoon, Ree excitedly receives word that her 'job application' has been accepted and she has been invited for an interview!

The vain little hin, always looking for even the tiniest excuse to indulge, wastes little time making her way to Aellos Clothing store. After nearly an hour of perusing the various racks of clothes, trying on one outfit after another, and repeatedly dragging poor Aello from one end of the store to the other ...multiple times... playfully demanding his opinion... the poor man sighs in relief as she -finally- decides to settle on something.

Image
Hidden: show
Image
By the time she left the establishment, she was practically bouncing out the door with her adorable new outfit-- maybe just a little too pleased with herself! But of course, if she was going to "properly prepare" for an interview, then a mani-pedi was -absolutely- necessary! After all first impressions were important, weren't they? Why yes they were. Never mind that shed be wearing shoes even if she chose the perfect color for her toes! Not the point!

And so she made her way across the busy street to Zacharys, where the poor man soon discovered that Aello wasnt the only unfortunate soul subjected to Ree's particularly chatty mood that afternoon.

"Oh! Do you think Solaris and Nathan will ever get married?! They're so cute together! And what about Hank? Male Hins are practically unicorns in these lands, you know! And he is also so cute! Oh! Have you seen the two Elven twins lately? I really miss them! And if you haven't read their detailed account of Sel's attempted 'mating dance', where he tried to attract multiple human females in the Wide, you -HAVE- to read it!" She breaks up laughing, melting back into her chair in complete relaxation "he failed so miserably!" she says with a breathy and adoring voice, clearly loving every moment

The conversation continues from one story to the next, with Ree happily gossiping away while Zachary tends to her nails completely defeated. The poor man could hardly finish fast enough, thoroughly exhausted by what she cheerfully called "girl talk!". But... unfortunately for him, Ree had treated herself to the most expensive 'spa package' he offered, complete with -several hours- of pampering. By the time he was done, Zachary, a husk of his former self and wide eyed with exhaustion, and in utter disbelief in how just how much the little hin could talk, was nearly pleading to Kelvmore to please release him from his pain and suffering.

Finally, feeling positively adorable and ready to take on the world, Ree settles down at the Blushing Mermaid to make a few finishing touches and to put together a list of her references. She hadnt been asked to do so, but she was known to be an over preparer when it came to planning.

Ree's Personal References
------------------------------
Jax - entrepreneur and esteemed secretary of the hinsortium
Guido - Successful business owner of the Blushing Mermaid and professional seafood chef
Mossy - Merchant extordinare of Mossy's Mercantiles!
Jorn - Land owner, and long time farmer of Baldur's Gate's outer city
Callo - City watch, guard and keeper of peace

While she wasn't nearly as talented at dealing with people as Jax, and admittedly was more nervous about the interview than she probably should have been, she was determined-- besides, she'd already spent half the afternoon getting ready for it! It would be an absolute shame to let all that pampering go to waste!
"Who would've thought interviews could be so much fun!" she thought to herself.
...never mind that she hadn't actually -had- the interview yet...
She couldnt help but think she should visit Aello and Zachary every week from now on.
Those poor poor merchants...

-=Baldur's Mouth Gazette=-

Application for Part time Junior Investigator and Rumor Chaser
Applicant: Ree Tosscobble
Occupation:Professional People Watcher, and Aspiring Journalist
Working Hours: Evenings, preferably... mornings are dreadful.

Dear Miss Sharp,

I have been interested in the Gazette for some time now, and with the recent publication, I thought to myself... well, no time like the present to apply!

I've always had a rather curious nature, as we Hin's often do, and I do enjoy a good mystery when there's one to be had! I've also been told on more than one occasion that I have a rather talent ability of learning other people's business-- you know, the perfectly innocent and fun stuff that makes good stories. I also enjoy writing quite a bit, and would love for the opportunity to both learn and contribute under your supervision.

Please see my qualifications below for your consideration!

Relevant Skills and Experience
Investigations:I'm rather good at finding things! Lost belongings, missing people, misplaced valuables... you'd be surprised what turns up when you know where to look! Even once upon a time I looked into some murders that randomly happened in the gate and even shared my findings! Interesting right?
Observation: I have a keen eye for details and tend to notice things others overlook. Being normal hin sized certainly helps! People have a peculiar habit of forgetting I'm there which makes for great observations, and often leads to much more interesting bits of information and leads!
Discretion: I'm exceptionally good at keeping secrets, well-- you know, when they need to be kept secret! I know when something is a good story or when it may be -too- much for our audience! But, with a little creativity, anything can be worth a read, right? Why say "missing cat" when you could say "Frisky Feline? or Meowlicious intent? read more to find out!"
People Skills: I'm quite sociable and enjoy meeting new people! I've acquaintances throughout the city, from the docks to the Upper City.... though, the upper city tends to be rather hin-tolerant.... so I prefer the lower cities! But really, I'm rarely one to turn down an interesting conversation!
Local Knowledge: I'm a local girl who is particularly familiar with Heapside and the surrounding districts! If I'm not out scowering the Wide for good deals, then I enjoy taking my dog Sombra on walks through the many streets, with an occasional stop at a tavern or three!
Availability: I do have a small wine business that affords me a rather flexible schedule, and I'm generally available during the evenings to do some writing! I'm also quite comfortable working late into the night, so I would prefer the night shift if available-- flexible as needed, of course!
Additional Qualifications
  • Excellent at navigating unfamiliar places.
  • Quite resourceful when faced with the unexpected!
  • Not easily hintimidated!
  • Willing to travel when necessary.
  • Possess my own writing supplies.
  • Can provide references! Though... I'd appreciate some notice before you contact them.
Salary Expectations

Negotiable! But mainly something that provides a small allowance for wine and the occasional pie. Investigating can be hungry work for us hin's you know!

In closing, I'd be delighted to have an opportunity to demonstrate my abilities on a part time basis with potential for future growth! I'm certain I could prove myself useful!

Warm regards,
