Mizzrym. The fated day.
26th of Alturiak, 1358

The Vanguard held discussion with Feleron of Doron Amar, to which a private conversation between a Ghaele, Feleron, Ko're, and Ril'tyrr would follow. A candlemark would pass before Michael Dunn, Fierlith, Mizzrym, Aurelien, and Traegan would encounter the Ghaele visage in the Sharp Teeth. Discussion, heated, was amicable to varying degree dependent on perception of those speaking, but not entirely hostile yet. Provocation on Feleron's side in the manner of spoken word was responded to by Traegan, and the elven priest couldn't follow next word without gurgle in exsanguination. The Ghaele gave response in defense of the priest, attacking Traegan, which prompted response of Michael and Aurelien to attempt the Ghaele's fortitude until the Ghaele rendered Michael inexistent. The Ghaele recovered the broken body of the priest, and demanded our departure. Traegan and Michael restored in Greenest.

26th of Alturiak, 1358

Traegan has departed the Vanguard.

M'M
27th of Alturiak, 1358

Restructuring of the Vanguard is underway, Ranger and member positions remain as Michael and I modify criteria and course correct Vanguard interests and presence. Patience is requested during this transition.

M'M
28th of Alturiak, 1358

Discussion between Doron's Syndreth, Vanguard's Micar'Mizzrym, Affiliate of both Micar'vilchi has produced formal truce between both organizations. Permissions of presence is not established in Doron, but violence between both are *expected* to be at formal conclusion, as well as any provocation from either side.

Any violation of this will result in immediate termination of the Vanguard from rank, as well as involvement of future Vanguard operations. Don't test this.

Syndreth's ability to observe this ledger is restored, safely kept in neutral guarded hands at House Darius.

Mal?
2nd of Tarsakh, 1358

Bumped into that pretty elf, Arendhel outside the Friendly Arm Inn.

She's some kind of soldier from Doron Amar. Wears colourful armour and a purple cape. My height.

Didn't say anything that isn't known amongst us, merely told me about how the captain and Feleron faced off.

I told her that I wasn't involved in the whole Aunrae business due to caravan work. Which is true.

Any way... Given she isn't hostile toward me, I can't help but wonder if she's hoping I'll spill something juicy that she can report back to her people.

Thought I'd bring this up in case any of you run into her on the road. She seems harmless but still seems they're keeping their eyes on us.

A drow was sighted on the Uldoon Trail just outside of Greenest. She was dressed in a mask and hood, but spoke in commonly uttered drow terms and words and some of her dark colored skin shown between her articles of clothing. Garb was dark with bits of red in it, did not get a look at her face but her eyes looked reddish.

She left parchment and I sent her along, it was just me and Fierlith and Fierlith had just been in combat and I did not want to risk injury by starting a fight. See attached flier. She also left a pouch of an unknown white powdery substance and said it was a gift, I believe it was poison.

5th of Ches, 1358

Pertaining to events that occurred on the 4th of Ches in the meeting between the Vanguard, the Radiant Heart, Doron Amar, and Lord High Rider Dhelt of Elturel.

Feleron spoke the following demands on behalf of Doron Amar for peace with the Vanguard. These are directly quoted from the man and not my writing.

1) First, the death of Vanira and Kethelis must be acknowledged as murder and not "self-defense". It must be publicly apologized for. (Note, that this term was not accepted, the hope of the other parties is that I will change my mind over time, there was no resolution for this demand.)

2) Then, those killed - namely Kethelis and Vanira - must be brought satisfaction for their deaths. Anything other than your direct deaths, naturally. (This will be carried out by Captain Dunn, and solely Captain Dunn)

3) Thirdly, leave Aunrae alone. Wholly and completely. Ignore her existence if that is the only way to do it. (We will)

4) Lastly, you must make up for your blasphemy against Tel'Seldarine. As such, we accept brother Simon's proposal. If you accept it as well. (His proposal will be included in point #5)

5) Simon's proposal:

"While I hold no personal allegiance or praise to the Seldarine, I greatly respect what they are and stand for. The Gods are beings more powerful and wise than we could imagine."
“We must have faith and trust in their actions. If such respect was in place in the first place, the Celestial would never have been attacked. You may have walked away unhappy with what happened, but instead, this was the outcome."
"As such I would propose a task to you Mister Dunn, should the High Priest accept as well is on him. That task is to learn more of and understand the Gods. Attacking a Celestial of Corellon is the same as attacking the God himself, thus,
“I recommend that perhaps seeking an understanding specifically for how he works be the biggest step to mend the bridges.”

~Captain Dunn
5th of Ches, 1358

Additional notes concerning the Lord High Rider Dhelt. I will quote the man, then write my thoughts on them.
1) "If you seek to cooperate with Elturel in the future, I must insist that you and those involved with the attacking of the celestial seek a quest of atonement."
2) "You and I share oaths, Lord Aaron. We are of the same mind in this too." (A reference to paladin oaths)
3) "As I mentioned, if it is the Whitewood Vanguard's intention to cooperate with Elturel, I must trust that those I work with are righteously minded."

Read the words spoken, verbatim, by the man whose land I south to purchase for our home. We are not knights, I have stressed this time and again. And even if I were to satisfy all the above remarks by him, in accordance with seeking piece with Doron Amar, we would be under a paladin's thumb.

I cannot in good faith, lead you lot further along this path. Was my hope and intention, that we might be off in the wilds outside of Elturel, and thus, out of sight and out of mind, as we waged our campaign against the Zhentarim. We needed Elturel, because, without an army backing us, in our current form, assets of the Northern Barony which includes the Ebon Blades, The Blackrose, and the Zhentarim, would marshal and march on any outpost we built.

If I do not have a hold for us to operate from, I do not have a home for us. If we do not have a home, we remain the gypsy force we have been these past few months. Discard able the moment we displease whomever has allowed us a temporary lodge, either for our works, or the way those works affect the world around us.

We are not knights, we will never be righteous. I would never try and make any of you something that you are not. Tomorrow, on the 6th of Ches, we will come together as a company, and we will discuss the path forward once again. Ken well we've had many such meetings of late, but this was never going to be an easy road.

Now, we must change, overcome, and adapt. Fair winds to you lot, I look forward to hearing from each of you soon, and providing the opportunities you lot deserve, to live free and prosperously.

The day Madelyn's thirst was born in blood.
28th of Ches, 1358

I was going to patrol with Terri of Phoenix Company and Derik of the Bladestone Foundation, practice for an upcoming job fighting bandits (report to follow). I had to buy more scrolls in the city and was going to depart from the farmlands with them. When I returned they had gone on ahead but in an northerly direction, and so I went to Thundar's Ride to catch up.

I was first greeted by the sight of Sette, who accompanies Terri, running south at full pace, she did not pause at my greeting. I continued north and saw what she fled from - a bloodied field near Tristan's shrine to Hoar. Further north still was a large hole roughly twenty feet in diameter with thick black fog emanating. Around this hole danced roughly twenty or so well armed gnomes who were praising this hole and dancing upon the wounded figures of Derik, Rhaeg, and Terri.

I snuck upon the dark celebration and drug Derik off toward the Shrine. I tended his injuries and got him steady, and went by for a second. By this time, the gnomes had thrown Terri into the hole, and her form had disappeared within. I got Rhaeg up while they were distracted and also took him back to the Shrine to tend his injuries and get him fighting ready. Sette had run off to secure reinforcements, and Derik Sent to Carah for the same purpose.

However, at this time it was apparent that the very ground was drinking up the blood of the earlier skirmish, and the gnomes were preparing to summon something. Numerous gnomes poured out of the hole, and they began to search for their missing prize (Derik, Rhaeg) that had gone missing. Battle ensued, as Derik was chased by roughly ten to fifteen gnomes. He ran at full tilt while I threw knives and Rhaeg lept in and out of the fray. Several including our Doan joined us from the south and the battle was chaotic but won. After a second wave, and while the defenders tended to wounded (Derik had fallen again, I'm not sure who else).

With no apparent solution for the finding of Terri, and with no capable magi present on the field to provide better solution, I entered the hole in search of her.

The hole was no rabbit hole, but it certainly took immediate twists and turns into madness. I was mentally attacked from the very beginning, with mad whisperings of nonsense that I began to repeat as I delved deeper within. Some things are a blur, and even writing this I get a ringing sensation in my ears, and my eyes tend to water. Somethings are not meant to be seen, and it is a blessing I cannot recall everything to recount it here.

The first trial, was a choice between three stairs. One went straight down, one was a spiral curve, and the last were square. I remember taking the square set, at times I would be upside down looking at more stairs, or sideways up, or upward down, I realize that doesn't make sense to read. It made less to walk the path.

I remember next passing through walls of glass, with sights I do not recall beyond them. Then a rope, or glass platforms. I chose the rope. I think it was the right choice but I'll never likely know. None of them may have been right choices.

I remember climbing, at first down, but then a sense that I was sideways. I climbed for days. I climbed for tenday. I climbed for years. I climbed for lifetimes. Madness and mind destroying sights my company. I began to see sigils, or had seen some as I delved to the point of the rope, and began to carve those into myself. No language, but unholy abyssal symbols that I blessedly no longer recall to keep here. I know that Sayushi came to visit me while I recovered at the Warrior's Rest, and she made copies of some of these. Fierlith did too, and recounted these to Sirion for further study.

As for the rope, it was made up of, or laced with, shards of glass. I don't recall any pain, but my hands bear the lacing of scars. It was then I came upon a doorway, or a gate, or some -point- of passage and my soul was tested. It sensed recent sin, and it actually welcomed me in further, some unseen force granting me passage.

I was then upon an iron platform, and there was Terri, wounded upon it. A voice I did not see demanded blood. I asked that it release us both. It agreed, in exchange for blood. I believe it intended for me to sacrifice her, or hers. I gave it mine via a cut on my arm, I did not realize my hands were bloodied already by madness or the malice of that place. The being laughed, and there was flame. I remember a great heat. And then a flash. And I was back upon the hill where I'd entered the hole, with Terri, surrounded by the other defenders.

I was completely out of my mind at that time, but the task was done and Terri was saved. ~~I remember I remember I remember~~I remember everything I'd said. And trying to carve more of those symbols into me before Rhaeg and Derik stopped me. It was like being in a horrible dream with everything on repeat. My hair had grown out, as had my beard, my nails long and yellowed. My clothes were in tatters (indeed, even the new hat Fierlith had given me the day before had worn to barely there scraps).

Derik took me to the infirmary of the Warrior's Rest. Sayushi paid visit as mentioned above, prying, I think, though I was no great help to her, at the time I wasn't even really aware of her presence. Fierlith came after, and, bless her heart, went through the process of removing and then healing my body of all those marks. A healing prayer set my mind at ease, combined with copious amounts of rest.

I remember my time down in the hole, but in a detached, numb way. Like one might recall being on a great journey many years later. I try not to dwell on it, those things I saw, they fade a little more each night. I think I sometimes still see them in my sleep, which has not come easily the past few days. I pray that this too passes in time.

The Vanguard made another rally despite the mistakes, flaws, and hardships faced.
30th of Ches, 1358 Vanguards

Read the above, you brave lot who are still about to read it. A demon was empowered by my actions, though it was with the intention of saving someone. I would not stand idle and let that thing scheme and cause greater harm.

I'm calling out to each of you, as I said I might in time of great need. The time is now, only two and one half tenday since we dispersed to the wind. For any willing and able, return, and wear the silver once again.

I've wrote to Mayor Ghastkill and accepted his offer of land and building. We'll be housed in Nashkel once the construction is complete. Aye, far removed from any eastern front we meant to make a stand at. But not so far removed that we cannot affect the region as a whole.

Sellsword and mercenary work, with our allies in the Everwatch, and the Bladestone Foundation.

The first new job is hunting down this demon. If you're willing, and answer the call, I'm asking that you come back home, back to our Vanguard.

Mayor Ghastkill has tasked us with assisting the Nashkel Guard. One of their guardsmen was found dead, completely drained of his blood, but with no apparent injury or puncture wound. He was found dead in their barracks. A man of the first watch saw him last alive during the morning marks. A man of the second watch saw him sleeping in his bunk. A man of the third watch found him dead.

The state of his death was that his face was drained of its blood, white as a ghost. There were no puncture wounds or apparent injuries to him. When they went to move the body, he fell, like a board, stiff.

I don't know the exact connection yet, but this may also be the work of the 'golden hawk' company. The mayor had an amulet in his possession that matched the same as we found during the Bekkregard work.

The guardsmen has not been buried, the first step is having any of our magi and our priestess Fierlith inspect the dead soldier before he is buried. Nashkel doesn't bury their dead til spring causes the ground to thaw so there is some time.

Ran'll Cobb, Wood Magi of the Reaching Wood, has agreed to start working on undoing the harm the Zhentarim have done to the local lands in their retreat before the Lord's Alliance army. Including the damages caused by their fires and salted earth tactics.

I have offered him armed escorts of the Vanguard, and where necessary, monetary funding. He's asked for nothing in exchange but was receptive to working together where and when necessary.

So instead I have offered for us to perform regular patrols through the Reaching Wood, as time and fate allows, putting down the gnolls there.

Aunrae spotted injured at the Shrine of Eldath, Reaching Wood, along with Kethelis who was unharmed. Unknown attacker got after Aunrae and Rhaeg at unknown location but it was not at the Shrine of Eldath. I know we're not targeting her currently but wanted to keep everyone informed of recent event.

~Captain Dunn
8th of Tarsakh, 1358

Investigation into the death of the Nashkel Soldier concluded. He was an inside agent for our old foes, the Golden Hawks. He completed a task or served his usefulness and they had him killed for it. Our investigation turned toward the outskirts of Nashkel, where we found another agent of the Golden Hawks, a self professed 'Nightsinger.' The assassin said that there are a number of them in the Golden Hawks, but the way he said it made it seem that not all of them profess to be such.

I do not ken if this title is one of profession or faith.

He offered to make a deal, for us to ignore one another so they could operate in Nashkel. I declined, and said that for as many of them that we find in Nashkel, we would send to the end of the road - or in other words, kill. My only offer to them was to stay away from our Nashkel, that we would not pursue them elsewhere in Amn. Because frankly, we cannot save the whole of the world, and we are due in the north soon. We'll do our part to protect our new home. Our stretch of the road.

In the end, the agent said that the offer was accepted. Whether this is true or not only time will tell, but he did say that his masters saw and heard our conversation through him. Doan dispatched him with fire, afterwards, and a golden hawk amulet was recovered by our Mizzrym.

She will be writing a report or sending a copy of this one to Mayor Ghastkill, and warn him against keeping the Golden Hawk amulet in his possession, which was recovered from the dead soldier. As well as provide him word that we, by our presence, may have staved off this guild of assassins from infiltration Nashkel.

Ashenie of Ilmater aided us in this task and we do owe her a favor for the kindness. In regards to the original dead soldier, she did try and return him to life, but was unable to in the end.

~Captain Dunn
8th of Tarsakh, 1358

More drow sighted in the north. On the 7th of Tarsakh a traveller spoke of a drow raid outside Soubar, where captives either were taken or attempted to be taken.

On this date however, three drow were sighted at the Shrine of Eldath along with Ran'll Cobb and Kethelis. The drow were Aunrae, Ulla (see Mizzrym's recent report) and an unnamed drow female that professed to be Eilistraaen. The unnamed drow wore travelling attire similar to a scout and possibly had a wolf or dog companion, her cloak was green and her leather was undyed brigandine.

Cobb, the wood magi, appeared largely ignorant to what drow were or that they were all a threat. He was originally with Aunrae, Kethelis, and unnamed drow, but later went to speak to Ulla when she appeared, and he later left.

Kethelis, Aunrae, and unnamed drow argued for hours about the unknown drow's trustworthiness. Kethelis later 'tested' her and as they all departed together, I assume she passed his test. Most of the time was spent in this inane argument.

However, a key piece of information was slipped out while I listened in on the conversation. I spied on their conversation due to the 4 or 5 to one odds and I did promise Doron Amar I would not hunt Aunrae.

That said, Kethelis spoke up about a tiefling allowing her (the unnamed drow) into Candlekeep. They later mentioned Edelgarde by name. Aunrae spoke of Edelgarde likely later allowing this unnamed drow into her house. I assume this is the House of Spades located in Winding Waters but could also be a reference to Candlekeep. Be aware that if Candlekeep is supporting the drow they may also be, either on purpose or by circumstance, supporting Zhentarim efforts.

~Captain Dunn
9th of Tarsakh, 1358

I discussed further with the wood magi, Cobb, and his efforts to keep the war out of the Reaching Wood. He has agreed to help us in our campaign though indirectly, to wit:
1) He will assist us with knowledge of the hazards he creates in the Reaching Wood to keep out the armies, chiefly, any paths and cut through ways he creates or alters.
2) We will do our absolute level best to keep our fighting out of the Reaching Wood, while, at the same time, making use of the aforementioned trails to try and outmaneuver the Zhentarim and not be otherwise caught on the roads by either approaching army, which, we are not currently allied with.
3) We will do our best to lose any Zhentarim pursuit before retreating back into the wood, and will only use the woods to retreat when pursued as a last resort. However, Cobb is well aware of the ever changing circumstances of war and will understand if things go astray.
4) He will look into whether the Zhentarim have started to garner allies amongst the Reaching Wood gnolls or nearby orc tribes, and alert if he sees change in the movements of either.
5) I will continue to try and convince some of the other factions to start supplying lumber to the two armies to prevent their need to source local lumber from the Reaching Woods.
6) Cobb plans to start taking up salvaged or otherwise dead or fallen trees of the Reaching Woods, leaving them on the western borders, and will then contact Captain Vanders of the Hellriders to inform her of this before unseen supply.

It is learned that the Reaching Woods may still retain a drow supply cache discovered in early 1357 when the corpses of missing Triel rangers were found upon altar dedicated to Lolth, unknown symbol to a drow House found with it. A siege happened just a few tendays earlier of the discovery within the flindswood, dark elves were defending a supply cache potentially composed of raided goods. Aunrae was spotted with Blackrose retainers and departed once safety secured, providing little assistance in the attack beyond bare minimum.

Nathan of House Darius potentially may have more information to offer on this topic.

Netanya, along with several others of the road, including our Ranger Doan, came across a damaged dwarven forge in the wilds. Netanya recovered a dwarven artifact hammer amongst the ruin. I tracked her down to her estate in the Gate to ask her intentions for it, and blessedly, she intends to turn it over to Bhor of Kraak Helzaak. Our ranger Doan was rightly concerned over the distribution of an artifact of his peoples and I am happy to report that Lady Divine feels so inclined.

I did offer her a small favor or task on behalf of her doing this deed. While we do not directly benefit from the discovery or exchange, I know it brings comfort to Doan and so I am happy to offer this.

~Captain Dunn

A blade was also recovered at the dwarven forge mentioned in the previous days report. It was recovered by a merchant named Westlyn or Wesley or some such. It was then purchased by Szarilana of House Darius and then gifted on to the paladin of Sune, Yashe. Yashe intends to follow up with Kraak Helzaak to determine if it is a dwarven artifact. I do not know what its ultimate fate will be.

As the Vanguard rallies itself and prepares for the war ahead, so too, must administrative functions resume.

Therefore it is with great joy and celebration that I announce the promotion of Fierlith Silverglade from the rank of Ranger, to Sergeant. With the responsibilities that fell to our last Sergeant-priest. One such duty is the upkeep of the wills. If yours is in need of update or revision, get up with her as time and fate allows.

Fair winds my happy Vanguard, there's work ahead.
