He is talking about common programming guideline, which roughly sounds like:
"At no event should a duplicate code exist anywhere in your program.".

It does make sense. It does sound like that DC was simply something that was overlooked (because ESL values for individual warlock invocations do not follow a pattern or algorithm).

No idea if it's related to ongoing (it seems) DC tweaks, but my Eldritch Spear (spell level 2) lowers my Bewitching Blast's (Spell level 4) DC by 2. I never used this blast shape before, but it seems a little silly that Eldritch Spear would lower DC when Eldritch Doom didn't increase DC of the essence.

According to the wiki, the spell level of the blast should be the higher of the shape or essence applied. So if you use doom, it should count as lvl 9. If you use spear on a higher lvl essence, the the essence lvl should count. That doesn't appear to be the case so looks like it's a bug.

The wiki itself has two "different" statements, on this.

"If both a blast shape and a blast essence are added to the Eldritch Blast, then the spell level of the blast is equal to the higher spell level of either the shape or essence."

aka Blast ESL is equal to the higher of the blast or essence ESLs.

Then it goes on to say:

"Equivalent Spell Level: Each invocation has an equivalent spell level (ESL) to determine the save DC (if it allows a save) and the required power to dispel it. If both a shape and an essence are applied to an Eldritch Blast, the ESL of the Eldritch Blast is the higher ESL of the eldritch blast, shape or essence. The ESL of an eldritch blast is x, where x is determined by the blast damage of the Warlock (xd6)."

aka Blast ESL is equal to the number of Blast Dice you have. (or the highest ECL of blast/essence, whichever is highest)

In my experience, the latter statement (statement 2) has been the true one. It has also capped at ESL 9. Though, this might be something they are changing (which, would make DC-locks even less viable). Really, the former statement just leaves out the part about the eldritch blast (when it refers to blast, shape, or essence) and the latter statement includes it.

Right. I think we're all saying it is broken and that the ESL of the blast should always be the highest between blast, essence and shape (capping at 9).
