As far as 3D dnd products go I think it will be better than most. There are a lot of bad DnD games out there, divinity is already DnD like so it won't be hard for them to keep true to the spirit of the game since it is a monster and complicated product to translate to the digital realm.

I watched the live stream. It has some promise but has some major issue:
1. The assets (music, sound effects, graphics, menus, etc) are lifted from Divinity Original Sin 2, it doesn't have any real atmosphere that makes me think bg3. It feels more like Divinity Original Sin 3. Even the Intellect Devourers they showed had the same sounds as the slugs in DOS2.
2. While the cut scene was amazing, the actual story dialogue was lack luster. Every companion you met they just acted like a complete jerk, especially that halfling. It's hard to get invested in any of the characters if they are are all tsunderes.
But I did call it on discord last year that we'd be playing the Illithids. I mean I was (sort of) right? (I sure hope the story ends with us becoming a full Illithid and joining the hive mind).
Full prediction:
Despite your best efforts you end up becoming a full Illithid and joining the hive mind. Then, Minsc, who had survived all these years by being petrified shows up and somehow frees you from the hive mind a la Picard being deborgified. Then you lead a counter attack on the hive while riding a red dragon that you control with your new psionic gifts.

This is going to be Divinity 3, if anything.
Baldur's Gate belongs to a different era and the story ended there.
These people are resorting to a marketing ploy which plays with your feelings of nostalgia in order to sell more copies this time round, since their other licence didn't garner half the reputation of the Baldur's Gate series.
Don't be fooled.

A more serious Divinity suits me so, I couldn't care less so long as the game is fun, the lore is mostly respected, and it's less goofy than prior Divinity titles.

That's not a conspiracy theory! A conspiracy theory would be the thematic comparison of the alien illithid invasion of a world not-their-own via portal technologies and then relating it to the incessant advance of real-world psychological and technological preparations for a similar hostile takeover coming soon to a town or city near you.
And I may not be joking about this, either
Cool dragon-riding githyanki, though.

I will probably cave and buy it at some point, but I am not optimistic... I don't care about 4 vs. 6 person parties or isometric vs. 3d, but I don't like that Larian thinks they know better than everyone else what 'translates well' from D&D rules to a computer game. For example, they do not like that you can miss on an attack so they are changing how the mechanics work for attack rolls and such. Never mind that the entire idea of attack roles in 5e is a MASSIVE part of the tactics and strategies employed in and out of combat. If you don't want to miss, make sure you do things to ensure you attack with advantage, for example! I'm sure they will balance it, but many of the changes I have read about make me think that the rules and gameplay will be more akin to Divinity or maybe Pillars of Eternity, rather than 5e D&D.
As far as writing goes, I am unsure that Larian poses the capability of mixing seriousnous in with their goofy story lines. Just making NPC's act like jerks does not equate to less goofiness/more seriousness. It is fine to have plenty of humor, the BG series always had that... However, the key (IMO) to the depth of the story and NPCs was that they all had the ABILITY to be humorous while ALSO having things they cared about deeply and would react for or against discussions or decisions related to those beliefs. So far I have yet to see anything in trailers or articles that makes me think the writing will be anything close to what we saw in BGII or Throne of Bhaal where the villians had a story and you could understand (if not agree with) what lead them down their path.
It's nice that Wizards 'trusts' Larian to do their license justice, but I can't say that I do from either a mechanical or story perspective. Doesn't mean it won't be a good game mind you, I like non-D&D games too, but if I am playing a licensed D&D game I expect the rules to mirror p&p as closely as possible.

While cosmic ray might be going too far I would not say anything he/she wrote is wrong or a conspiracy theory... If you read the articles out there, especially recent ones you will see statements like the below from PC Magazine (
link)
PC Magazine wrote:Like Dungeons & Dragons, Baldur's Gate has dice rolls. These mostly occur during conversations, but they can also happen during combat (depending on the situation). Dice rolls occur for both major and minor situations. For example, a successful dice roll can cause your character to kill an enemy in a single blow, thus avoiding a lengthy battle.
So Dice rolls CAN (not will) happen in combat depending on the situation.... So indicating this is Divinity 3 and not a true Baldur's Gate game is probably fairly accurate. It does not mean it won't be a good game, by any means. However, for those looking to experience the strategy and tactics of 5e D&D and not just the lore of Forgotten Realms utilizing a completely different rule set there will almost certainly be some level of disappointment.

Mechanics aside, I just dont think the setting feels like FR anymore. I guess I am an old school 2nd edition fanboy or whatever, but the setting I grew up enjoying is too far gone - everything from races, geography, timeline, and storyline) - for me to be excited. I wont be buying this one.

I concur.
4E lost me. All they really needed (to me) was a bit of rule refinement a la pathfinder. Blowing up and remaking the world (again) with an almost Ebberon feel to the realms and mmo mechanics just seems like a completely different game to me.
Also never got into the DoS series despite the hype behind it. So maybe I’m just old and out of touch.
But each to his or her own.

You're right, I should've went with my first reaction and called it the ramblings of someone who was coming out of the gate negative because it wasn't what they expected.
At least now we have actual confirmation that you're wrong and your immediate jumping to "ebil marketing scheme company bad" thing was too hasty, that's neat.
You don't have to be so triggered because someone doesn't buy into the hype of cashcow milking of your favourite franchise.

I think it's a shame that Baldur's Gate's big comeback is Divinity: Original Sin 2.5 instead of being a game of its own, but Larian made two great CRPGs so I'm not too pessimistic about it.
