Graveyard CR 1. In one of the small mausoleums with a coffin container and a cabinent container yielded epic fighter boots and a heavy shield+3.
Even the lowest tier chest has a chance for an insane drop. Congratulations!

Got around 20 gold from wyverns chest on a level 21 character. Is that working as intended? Wyvern still seem to give decent exp at this level.
Probably pretty quick to look at that one chest. It's only a CR14 area iirc so a level21 PC should still get a chance for a decent loot roll. That said there is also always a chance for a stein or spoon. Hard to say if it's the appropriate tier with small sample size.

Thanks for the details. Haunted house level 1 and 2 are a bit lower cr, but chaos certainly isn't, nor is the fault. Do note the change only effects chests and not boss drops.
Keep the feedback coming. Thanks everyone

Just as a test, ran through Gnolls, level 30 solo.
I didn't keep specific track of each chest. However highest gold I got was 56. Lowest was 49 (from the Beholder chest at the end) I got a pair of glvoes with +1 vamp regen, a +1 warhammer with +1 in a random skill, and +1 skill helmet, and a bone wand.

Just had a run through the Frost Giant Keep, the Lich in the Cloud Peaks, and the White Dragon. 3 level 30 characters.
A few points on the loot in general
- None of the items were good enough to justify selling on auction or the forums
- Total gold value from the chests were about 1,500
- Items from the chests had a combined worth of about 2,800 gold, half of which was from one item alone
- Other items from chests were mostly clutter of insignificant weight (scrolls, options, jewelry)
All in all quite disappointing. Had we found a need to use consumables, rather than rely on actual casters, it would likely have either been a net gain of zero, or even a deficit.
Below are the details of each chest from the areas we visited.
Frost Giant Keep
Chest | Loot |
| Treasury chest (bottom right map) | 47 gold
Copper Ring
Potion of Bull's Strength |
| Tomb chest (center map) | 53 gold

| Throne Chest 2 | 49 gold
Fox's Cunning (scroll) |
| Hatchery chest (top left map) | 32 gold
Throwing Axe (206) |
| Valuables bag (prison, middle left map) | 267 gold
Greataxe +1 |
Cloud Peaks Lich
Chest | Loot |
| Chest 1 | 631 gold
Potion of Shield |
| Chest 2 | 47 gold
Torch |
| Chest 3 | 51 gold

Yeah, that's not my fault.

I think that's intended? Even in PnP there's always that 1% chance of rolling on a new loot list on the 1d100. And that roll can have you roll on the next tier up, and so on.
Having a tiny chance to find amazing items in low level zones is great imo. Three of my characters found a Dusty Tome at the Hilltop Ruins around level 5. Adventurer's luck.

Yes! This is how the loot generator is designed to work. It generates a range of items by choosing properties at random. The better a property is, the lower chance you have of obtaining one. In better chests, you are rewarded with a higher chance of rolling a good property. (You also get a better chance of having more properties on an item and of generating more items.)
This means you can generate some very good gear in low-level chests if you try them often enough. Because high-level characters are able to loot low-level chests with ease, there was a natural incentive for them to frequently loot low-level chests instead of going after chests appropriate for their level. To counterbalance this, the likelihood of generating good loot in a low-level chest is reduced for high-level characters. If the character far above the limit, the chest will only contain a small amount of gold. This should bring the loot rewards more in-line with the XP rewards players receive.
This should mean that all character levels can obtain good gear, although it will be a much more efficient process at the higher levels. Complaints that epic areas are not producing enough loot to satisfy the wand/potion/scroll requirements of looting them indicate that those levels were not properly balanced before this change began, so I'm keeping track of the areas and slowly going through them to update the chest spawns. This usually means upgrading the chests to produce better gear and plugging in the new chest randomizer so that chests won't always be in the same spot.
Hopefully as this process continues, players will find "loot runs" to be both challenging and rewarding. When looting lower-level dungeons solo is no longer a very rewarding process, it's our expectation that players will party up to seek out some appropriate level adventures. Dungeon expeditions should be an opportunity for exciting RP and progression rather than a tedious upkeep process that players undertake alone when they have trouble finding other RP.

Temporarily undoing the core of the changes to give us enough time to edit the areas so that loot is correct.

A bunch of us went to the white dragons and it was all pretty low loot and gold amounts. One chest ended up full of mundane armor and weapons that everyone left behind.

I was on the same run as Ariella just posted about.
Raw gold value was around 700.
I don't remember from which chest I got what, but this is what I looted from the chests/sarcophagi in the White Dragon Lair. Keep in mind that some things were left behind, such as non-magical quarterstaves, armors, and other worthless items.
- Copper Ring
- Ice Darts Scroll, Level 7
- Wand of Melf's Acid Arrow
- Copper Ring
- Potion of Bravery
- Obsidian
- Potion of Cure Disease
- AngelSkin scroll
- Phenalope
- Copper Necklace

Does the addition of Mimics count as “issues” with loot? Lol.
The addition is great imo, even if they are rather powerful for the CR of the Area encountered in. What was disappointing however is both times a Mimic was discovered in the same dungeon adventure, the Mimics dropped no loot once we eventually dispatched them, and, considering their power was on par with a Yellow Named mini boss, killing the Mimic only granted 50xp.
In short: Mimics are great, let’s see more, but have them drop loot and perhaps increase their XP reward. Cheers.

Nope, one has nothing to do with the other.

Short answer? Maybe. Some mechanics are meant to instill a sense of danger, "RUN!" should always be a valid tactic for your average, everyday adventurer. The promise of more XP and/or Loot just pushes folks to build to be able to exploit the delivery of xp/loot. Sometimes the point is to encourage folks to want to *try* to avoid things. (don't you wish folks actually had to try and avoid traps, for example?)

As Chad said, Mimics are designed to be a hazard, not an opportunity. They will generally be placed in dungeons with a higher proportion of chests than usual, but this will not always be the case. The ideal tactic to handle Mimics is to bring along a character with high Spot skill who can help the party avoid disturbing a Mimic.
Mimics and chest randomization will be present in many, many more areas when the loot rebalance is complete.
