Isn't the whole premise about 'killing the past'? I.E. Kill off everything you loved about the way things were and make way for the new cast and new universe order?

Sargon made a decent video on it.

There's a difference between clearing out old characters for new ones, and kicking them in the genitals before tossing them down a rocky ravine.

And that whole subplot? Could have been averted with a single sentence.

Poe: "Please, just tell me you have a plan!"
Holdo: "Yes, I have a plan, and it's Leia's. Now get back to your post."
Poe: "Ok, will do."

that subplot was purposely done that way to place poe in his place to the audience and show us that heroes are not just the ones that are the boldest and bravest. that is repeated a couple times in the movie and i liked it.

Like I said before, I realize what the themes and messages (god, so many messages) they were pushing. That doesn't excuse lazy writing.

It's like if a DM, when having a group of adventurers clear out a goblin cave, get to the chief, who's been raiding nearby villages. And the chief happens to be set to immortal, so that the adventurers can't kill him and lose because the DM keeps spawning goblins that eventually overwhelm the adventurers. But luckily, an NPC paladin comes in and saves them, showing them the need to sometimes ask for backup.

There's a difference, there, between the characters failing for their own shortcomings and failing because the chief was rigged to immortality.

The lesson stays the same, but one path is a railroad to the lesson. The adventurers never had a chance of success. The other possibility is if the goblin chief wasn't set to immortal and they lose, then it's the path the adventurers chose. One instance is because the DM didn't want to have to deal with the possibility of victory, so had a set script that must be followed. The other is because the players did something dumb, and so suffered the rightful consequences for it.

I have plenty of problems with TLJ, most of which have already been rehashed here, so I won't get into that. I just popped in to mention that anyone complaining about how Star Wars has just become a moneymaking tool hasn't been paying attention. It's been this way all way back to A New Hope in 1977:

http://www.businessinsider.com/how-star ... re-2015-12

It's always been a cash cow for Lucas (and now Disney) and a way to make money thanks to his foresight in retaining licensing and merchandising rights, but you might only just be noticing it now.

right.
everyone makes as much money as they can with whatever they can. it is a poor argument for or against anything. I am always ok with people getting paid.

are you mad at and boycott everything/everyone that makes money? how do you eat? sleep? type on this forum? kiss your wife? look in the mirror?

My reasons for boycotting aren't for that. It's because they're literally butchering lore to the point where even Mark Hamill said he didn't like how Luke's character turned out.

The series has moved past trying to simply tell a good story and is really pushing political narratives that so very clearly stand out. Not exactly what I'm looking for in Star Wars.

that is a funny remark flasmix. the only lore that is actual is the movies, so how do you write lore and butcher it at the same time. SW:TLJ is canon. the only canon that is irrevocable. unless you are saying that luke ep.4,5,6 is not staying in character in ep.7,8. the best response to that would be. it is because it is. the luke in ep 3,4,5 turns into the luke 7,8. it is canon. you may not like the canon, but it is canon.

And the best response to that is the official canon has become garbage.

At least when Star Trek changed their canon they had time travel involved.

fair enough. that is honest. personally i like it. it gave me the opportunity to consider how life after return was for luke. how that could have manifested into what we see. the changes in luke make him far more human to me than he had been before. how such heroism and goodness can have repercussions that last long after the fireworks fade. what sacrifices he makes and the toll he has taken to pay them off.

I liked the movie.

People need to remember Star Wars is a Epic Space Opera with soft science and mystical elements, not a Tragic Space Opera, nor a Science Fiction movie, nor a Fantasy movie. Go in expecting heroic actions, interpersonal drama with space-age technology as the stage and you have fun. Go in expecting the Expanse, a Tragic Space Opera with Hard-Science, and you'll be disappointed.

I explicitly said that it is NOT that. It's a heroic epic space opera. The whole shtick is about being grimbright (shitty circumnstances, undying hope.)

Although I came to the conclusion I am getting too old for Star Wars in general some time ago, I was disappointed by the latest one. Some Hollywood movie, nothing more. 6,5 out of 10
