Noob here, how does consignment shop work in detail?
What are the time limits on items, how do I get paid, are there fees to the Mudds for the service?
I'd like to learn more so that I may be able to play this market for gold without having to farm myself.
Everything is explained in detail when you speak to the npc.
Long story short, you talk to one of the Mudd brothers, pick an item from your inventory, specify the sell price, and they put it on sale for 3 days.
The catch is you pay a fee, and the fee is a percent of the price you requested. That prevents players from putting "One quadrillion goldpieces!" as a price tag for every item, and also adds incentive to keep the prices reasonable, as you pay the fee upfront, and if you price your item too high, you'll be losing money, because even if the item doesn't sell you won't be getting that fee back.

Well I will just keep laughing at this guy trying to sell the armor I sold for cheap.
(10 days later and item still there, I wonder if he already wasted more money posting the item trying to sell it)

I think at the core of the issue the fault is in the auction system, which is undeniably too out of character for a roleplaying world.
If I ever become active again and finish other projects first, expect to see it die in a fire and replaced with something much better, like actual auctions ran by NPCs, items displayed in the actual world, stalls that can be placed with their own little interface.
In all honesty you could just purge the use of the NPC auction system we have on this server and let players run their own without the need of NPC's. There are those that do that here as we speak and get RP out of it.
Yep. I think we should get rid of the auction system. Make trading IC

That would work better on the surface than in the Underdark so I would be against this.
If you want to trade IC use the forum threads. I have tried only once but got nowhere. Its good to have this alternative because paying hundreds of thousands for semi decent items via npc vendors is just frustrating. The prices seem suited to end game players who must be absolutely minted.
I have about 120k and I can't but anything decent at the various merchant npc stores. Without the market is have abandoned playing a while ago because my character would be gimped from the lack of gear and increasingly dificult spawns.

Nah, it wouldn't work, at all.
Look, no-one wants to spend the majority of their IG time trying to find buyers for the loot they found. If everyone were running around trying to "RP" selling each other shit, it would be horrific. Also, not everyone wants to do forum 'merchant style' RP... heck, I dont even like to read it. *yawn*
This "purge the IG auction" speak is almost as rubbish bin worthy as that other thread about coming to a consensus on tense(laugh).
Dont like the auction? Dont use it.

Yeah, I know the feeling. As weird as the consignment store can feel sometimes, it doesn't hold a candle to how bad things would be if we didn't have that.

((Personal opinion
This is not going to function well. This kind of game needs a way to sell items while seller is offline. This is due to relatively low population and existence of timezones and real life responsibilities. Few people are interested in merchant roleplay, and very few of them can stay online for prolonged periods of time to accomodate it. Thus systems like an "auction" are necessary.
In all honesty, the system we have is not even an auction, as people can't bid, only pay set price.
On other hand, if someone is willing to take a role of Cornelia on our server they're certainly welcome to do so.

As someone highly vested in merchant roleplay, even I think getting rid of it completely would be a headache. There are only so many hours in a day to update forum posts and meet folks in game. There is a reason ol Jackard isnt involved in "that sort of merchantry".
As Chambordini states, however, it could be modified and adjusted to be less OOC. Localized sales would be my first request. Player-run market stalls (where we can list our own goods for sale and list items for buyback as well). These would be much preferred for me.

Just because a specific system doesn't enforce some manner of mandatory usage doesn't mean it can't be improved, fixed, revamped, removed, nerfed, etc. Especially when it doesn't follow the principles the server is ruled by. As an example, it's global.
And you should learn to provide your opinion without calling the other opinions trash, it would go a long way to enticing other posters here to empathize with your views. And it'd also curb down the toxicity that is so unwelcoming on these forums.
If players want to talk about fixing, revamping, or improving the auction then, by all means, they should do so. If their suggestion is simply to remove the auction, and thus force players, globally, to either unload their loot on vendors for a pittance, or have to start IC'ly hawking their goodies around(even if they dont want to engage in merchant style RP) as an alternative, then I'm content to call that suggestion horrific.

Right now muling between the UD to surface is pretty easy. For those who want to make a quick OOC profit on any price discrepancies, should an anti-globalist system on Mudd's be added. There's always teleportation but that has a cost associated with it. I've always imagined Mudd's using magic to make it happen anyway. The instantaneous-ness is a head scratcher for certain.
I think these ideas just make the price of doing business higher, though perhaps making merchant RP more enticing. At the end of the day the best gear I've seen and gotten wasn't on Mudd's, and most of my digitals are made chest looting - and not using the auction. So it's not going to change much for me. Biggest thing might be just widening the amount of goods available. Mudd's doesn't accept everything and people with the good, goods don't post it on Mudd's.

Turn Mudd's in to an in game silent auction, instead of first come, first serve... Seller sets a 'minimum' bid and pays 10% of that amount to Mudd. Over 3 days players can make silent bids on the item, after which whoever bids the most gets the item and forfeits the gold. Gold is extracted from the bidder and refunded if they don't win to avoid a situation where the winner no longer has the funds they bid.
There, now it is an auction.

Doing some changes/updates to how Mudd's Consignment is setup would give a certain sense of realism to the game world. That could be nice.
But Mudd's does serve as a convenience to Players, more than anything else. If we CHOOSE to focus and occupy ourselves with Merchant RP, then we can easily do that, either with IG stalls or even the Auction House sub-forum. The best part of the current system is that it is catering to OPTIONS for RP.
And since I'm here, if we want to talk about greed, and also, talk about changes that could be done, how about we talk about the seriously IMPOSSIBLE situation of a glut of items that one can actually acquire, and sell. The "market" is ridiculously flooded, atm and always has been. What, are a thousand and one Dwarves and Elves contantly churning out magical wares so that goblins and giants and dragons can go hoard them every Reset?!!? RIDICULOUS!!!
If you want to change the culture of greed or the situation of a market, there are far bigger issued in the BGTSCC economy that Players reselling items on the consignment.
If someone can even loosely justify the current economy with any rational and seriousness to justify its existence, I'll straight up give you my entire Dragons Hoard of Items from the last 10 years of game play. I dare you!
