A Very Beregost Coup

Rumor spreads like wild fire throughout Amn, the Sword Coast, and the Western Heartlands that the Governess Isabella Benino of Beregost has been deposed from power by a coalition of Lathanderites, local Beregost leaders, the Sheriff de Oca of Amn, and some Amnian soldiers and deputies for her crimes of murder, theft, embezzlement and treason, among many others. Knight-Commander Eldarian Al'maire of the Song of the Morning temple, a key ringleader of the effort, is said to be given a hero level of applause from those gathered as he brought a bound and gagged former Governess Benino to the Song of the Morning temple to be held and charged for her crimes by the Sheriff de Oca. It is also said that Sheriff de Oca is now interim head of Beregost under Amn as the political fate of the town is worked out over the coming tenday now that the dark times in Beregost seem to be ending. Public proclamation is also given shortly thereafter that the Sheriff has written the Council of Six explaining Governess Benino's crimes and insisting on the removal all tax hikes imposed on Beregost, which the Council of Six swiftly agrees to do given the political embarrassment of Benino.

A Ceremony of Bright Appreciation

Rumor spreads that a ceremony was held in the Song of the Morning temple in Beregost honoring those who aided Beregost in removing the alleged corrupt Amnian tyrant Isabella Benino. Adventurer friends and allies of the Lathanderite temple as well as bystanders and well-known and lesser-known townsfolk of Beregost attend the ceremony. The Most Radiant High Priest Kelddath Ormlyr read off a long list of names of those who aided Beregost:

Wyn
Edmund
Eowiel
Cela
Neschera
Cecilia
Dave Counterpunch
Tolan
Enora
Jassin
Tari
Endelyon
Fiera
Tegeus
Thalantyr the Conjurer
Sheriff de Oca
Thunderhammer

The Most Radiant reserved special mention for Eldarian Al'maire, who over more than a year and a half, at great risk to himself, had struggled and slogged in the dark and light to uncover what Benino was up to and when discovered to assemble a political coalition to cautiously remove her from power for her allged crimes. As a special thanks, Kelddath gifted a relic of the church, Saint Lighthammer's Armor of Divine Golden Brilliance, into Eldarian's care and service in the name of the god Lathander, Lord of the Sun.

After the ceremony ends, rumor spreads that final judgement regarding the alleged criminal Benino will take place within a few tenday, as the evidence against her is so extensive that it is taking some time to gather by Sheriff de Oca's office to judge her in full. Many a local Beregost resident, residents not of Amn originally, speak eagerly of seeing Benino's head departing from her body and of general unhappiness and displeasure with Amn, perhaps the kindest phrase being stated: "Amnians, they're awful, only one who ain't too bad is that Sheriff de Oca."

Two adventurers leave word with the Inn Keep in Nashkel that they encountered a band of monstrous spiders while traversing the Cloud Peaks. The adventurers were astounded that the vermin could survive the terrible cold, though they were not particularly knowledgeable about the regular behavior and abilities of monstrous spiders.

Rumor has it that the two adventurers were climbing down to Nashkel when they were suddenly caught in a sprawl of webs, which hadn't been there on the way up. As they recovered from their surprise two large black spiders came jumping at them, while a third green spider spat at them from a distance.

Rumors of a great red dragon sighting circulate around Nashkel and Beregost. It was seen perched in the Cloudpeaks near Nashkel before flying off to the north. Some may have even seen it as it passed over the Friendly Arm Inn and the Wood of Sharp Teeth. The smell of smoke, carried by the wind, reached those in Nashkel not long after the dragon departed.

((All, see below IC release info on vbaddict's dark gnome character, Oki. Please have anyone you know of involved IC post in the Rumors of Beregost thread their IC RP reactions to Oki's release or PM these IC reactions to DM Golem and I. DM Golem is dealing with the OOC issues with this in terms of the gnome character going back to the Underdark for OOC server rules reasons.))

A public proclamation is read aloud by the town crier in Beregost and posted about the town regarding a gnome held in Amnian custody in the Beregost brig by the Beregost Amnian leader and law enforcement official Sheriff de Oca.

"Citizens of Amn and Beregost:

A gnome allegedly from the the subterranean region known as the Underdark and in previous association with wicked Drow was brought into the Amnian custody of my sheriff's office in Beregost with accusations of violating the Amnian laws of Breaches of the Peace and of Races hostile, violent, wicked, and evil by nature. I was asked to rule on punishment regarding this individual and I am charged to do so as the current highest civil administrator of Amn in Beregost.

In an effort to continuously show the difference between my Amnian administrative of Beregost and the previous unjust administration of the tyrant Isabella Benino, I charged an Amnian magistrate, after rigorous legal review, with putting together a legal analysis of why this gnome in our custody is innocent of all charges and has just been ordered released from Amnian custody.

The most relevant issue at hand is where this gnome's alleged crimes were committed. All reports received, ignoring whether the gnome's very nature is disallowed in Beregost, indicated that the gnome possibly committed Breaches of the Peace with associates outside of Amn. The border of Northern Amn set by the Treaty of Beregost ends at the bridge and river north of Beregost. It was indicated that the alleged incidents with this gnome took place north of this national boundary and so Amn would potentially be in violation of the Treaty of Beregost to charge this gnome with any Breaches of the Peace with little to show for producing a potential diplomatic incident, as the gnome does not seem to be a threat to anyone currently and it is not even certain that he committed violence beyond just mere self-defense and merely attempted an opportune time to escape an abusive Drow master that it is not even clear he had a legally binding contract with.

The relevant legal provision on Breaches of the Peace in Amn is cited below:
-Breaches of the Peace that may disrupt daily life and commerce in Amn will result in fines, banishment, or jail time depending on the severity, as determined by a Magistrate of Amnian Law. Breaches of the Peace include, but are not limited to:
• Unlawful gathering.
• Disruption to commerce and trade.
• Disobedience.
• Brandishing a weapon.
• Disruption of an official business.
• Violence. Actions in self-defense will be judged by the appropriate authority, but usage of harmful arcane magic in a conflict will always be viewed as suspect. Violence against the Council of Six, officials of Amn, the Amnian military, and the local Amnian militia and law enforcement, shall be punishable up to death.

Finally, the gnome is clearly not a race hostile, violent, wicked, or evil by nature. Based on testimony by a prominent member of the Church of Lathander, an organization held in high esteem by my Amnian administration, in terms of the gnome's demeanor, appearance, and witness testimonies, this gnome seems to be, well, a gnome, albeit with an odd complexion and somewhat more paranoid and reclusive personality. I cannot rule therefore with platinum judgment that this gnome is any more predisposed to evil, good, or disobeying or following the laws of Amnian civilization as any other common gnome, hin, or human of Amn.

The relevant legal provision on races in Amn is cited below:
-Races hostile, violent, wicked, and evil by nature, are hereby banned from Beregost and Nashkel and their Environs. Orcbloods of a civilized nature and that have business to conduct in Amn may be permitted at the discretion of the local Amnian authorities.‏
Therefore, as mentioned before, by the authority vested in me by the Council of Six of Amn, this gnome is hereby immediately released from Amnian legal custody and is free to go about his business.

Signed:

Sheriff de Oca of Amn
Amnian Civil Administrator and Sheriff of the Amnian Protectorate of Beregost"

Undead Stirrings in the South

An eccentric gnome going by the name of Clonifop Dippledop, possibly related to the famed treasure hunter of the same last name, is said to walk around Baldur's Gate's and Northern Amn's most popular adventurer taverns seeking aid for his lady in Amn. He says allegedly that a large volume of undead, under the leadership of a lich officer serving the infamous undead Netherese "General" that threatens war in the north, have been seen teleporting just outside of the gnome's master's area of property about the Cloud Peaks region of Amn. His lady master's property he tells those that would listen is in the shadow of the Amnian peak named in 1350 "Auril's Crown". Auril's Crown remains one of the highest and most remote peaks in the Cloud Peaks range since the 1350 expedition to climb it and name it, which Clonifop vaguely says he was somehow involved with.

Image

Clonifop claims to seek adventurers to aid his master to rid these undead from threatening his master's lands further. He claims his master believes that these undead search for something of significant tactical use and power on his master's lands.

Not having reached a resolution on his charges of breaching the peace and unsanctioned usage of magical energy at the recent Beregost fair, the adventurer known Liam was exiled and banned from Beregost on pain of death by the Amnian garrison in town on orders of Sheriff de Oca unless Liam returns to Beregost Amnian authorities to pay a 50,000 danter fine owed and publicly apologize to all he harmed at the fair.

Whispers spread that the Amnian-Northern Trade Initiative syndicate has finished briefly exploring three potential undeveloped trade routes from Amn to northern trade markets around the Sea of Fallen Stars. What developments result from this remain to be seen.

Chaos descended onto Beregost as creatures from the plane of Elemental fire began to appear throughout quite farming village. Of particular note is the activity at the Song of the Morning where High Priest Kelddath Ormlyr, through receiving a premonition, recruited adventurers to travel and confront a dragon on the elemental plane before it could enter into the Temple complex. Temple defenders secured and prepared a defense should the unspeakable occur while the adventurers confronted the dragon. The adventurers were successful much to the quick actions of the High Priest.

///Please note there is a partial retcon effectively changing the location of the battle to the elemental plane of fire. This is an official DM ruling and if any characters involved would not have planar traveled they can be thought of to remain behind. I thank you all for your cooperation.

Over the past few days, Beregost's local grapevine took note of the blistered and inflamed appearance of their latest prisoner - a petty would-be murderer awaiting trial, according to the populace. Rumor goes that it was from a great number of insect stings that required the intervention of a Cowled Wizard to remove, though official sources were close-lipped on how the stings came about.

The guards on shift at that time were apparently reprimanded for dereliction of duty, though nothing else came of it.

Word spreads that the elven prisoner, Kalidorian, has been released after a hearing with the sherrif. Many elves attended to plea for their comrade's release, including his victim. Members of the Temple of Lathander were also present to speak for the accused.

The accused was found guilty, expressing public regret for what was done. A one hundred thousand danter fine was levelled, and he was banished from Beregost, being handed over to the custody of elves in Doron Amar.

A notable thing occurred on the outskirts of Amnian territory at dawn rise a day or so ago, say the local merchants. They witnessed the march of a substantial, professional looking force of soldiery, moving rapidly into the nearby woods in the dead of night, only the passing of their platemail giving away their location. Within a matter of hours, the sky lit up with fire and the deep forest echoed with the sounds of battle.

As quickly as it had begun, it was over. The same force passed through the nearby villages, stopping off to feed, rest and inquire about a local bandit lord. They then departed for parts unknown, leaving only questions in their wake.

A merchant who travelled through Amn is said to be spreading a fairly unusual tale in chatter. While he relates only rumour (and admits this himself), he speaks of conversations had with fairly senior Amnian guard officials regarding forces Amnian scouts track through their wilderness. They move faster and with fervour, seeking only brief shelter at settlements before moving on.

While Amn tries to keep track of these unusual movements, they are largely unable to keep up. Their attempts to track them on horse back are driven off in both cases by magical assault. Some turn up dead. Others are found dazed in taverns, babbling incoherently about feathered angels and burning devils. Magical attempts are driven off by overwhelming power, though brief.

The only sign of the movement of these powerful, tightly knit bands is the corpses and battle sites they leave, scorched by powerful magic. However, since no major Amnian settlements have been threatened by these periodic and ferocious battles, local Amnian regiments and town watches have thus far held a defensive position around their territory.

( RELEVANT INFORMATION:

- Filters through trade way traffic and a particular merchant group at the FAI
- Filters through diplomatic channels, though more brusquely. Enquiries from Baldurs Gate are met with a rather stern "we're handling it")

A small scandal unraveled in Beregost this week in regards to what is now a month old art theft. The suspected burglar a man by the name of "Halflocks", who was being held by the Sheriff while awaiting execution was released, after an alibi came forward. The alibi a local woman gave testimony that "Halflocks" was with her during the time of the robbery. The man who now fills the Sheriff's cell is none other than Mario Palido a feared and respected member of the city guard. A trial will be held for guardsman Palido, who claims he was framed after the Sheriff returns from his trip to see Bailiff Axehand in Nashkel. It is suspected to be a short trial as the remaining missing art was discovered in Mario Palido's home.

Travel on the Trade Way has slowed due to a bridge that has been mysteriously destroyed. The now defunct bridge is located north of Beregost and south of the Friendly arms Inn.
