Desmond Fayte - Roses Watered with Blood

Unread post by Sylvver »

"How do you plead?" He asked me.
I looked to my right and back to my left, two men who were once my soldiers, two men who were once my friends.
"Innocent"
"There is no need to make it harder on yourself then it already is"
I looked back at him, the man who was once my lord "I plead innocence, I was merely doing my job, as commanded by you"
"You were never commanded to kill those man, only bring them back for justice"
"But they killed her, they bloody killed her, they got the justice they deserve!" I yelled at him and spat at the floor before being held back by my former men.
"I gave you power to observe the laws in my city and make sure they are kept, not the power to dispense justice as you see fit!" And with that, Nasher rose to his feet and stepped down from his dais.
"You have served me well in the past, but this is a crime I cannot afford to overlook" his gaze turns to the pair holding me: "Take him away, he is to be stripped of his rank and position, his name stricken from the records..." his gaze returns to me, as if trying to pierce my soul with those stern, focused eyes "...And he is to be exiled from the city, a death penalty hanging over his head should he ever return"
I look down at the tooth dangling from a chain on my neck and back to him and smile "Death? This is how it is to be then? An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth?" I laugh maniacly as my two jailors drag me away from the room with a grim look on their face.

"Captain," they said "We are sorry" and with that they rip off my ranks, and whatever is left of my dignity.

That night, with only my clothes, my rusted sword and a horse, the last 'token of mercy' for my service, I left the city I had spent two decades defending, the very city I could not defend my own family from.

"Julia" I said, clutching the tooth hanging from my neck "If only you knew.."
And just as the necklace slid back to its place, so did a tear slide down my cheek.

The serving wench had just handed me my fifth mug of the night when I heard his voice.
"Desmond"
I put down my mug and looked around to see that madman again.
"Desmond is dead" I said "The name's Grim"
"You are not dead yet, but keep testing my patience I assure you that you will be"
"Fine, what is it this time, Thane?"
"The same, Desmond, I merely want to give you back your honor..."
"There is no honor in serving your lord"
"You can repeat that as often as you want, but we both know that you cannot ignore the hunger swelling within you..."

I threw my mug at the man, watching in disappointment as it shattered and spilled ale on the nearby wall "SHUT UP!"
The man looked at me, a smile spreading on his face "That's it, let your anger out, let your thirst for revenge consume you"
"I SAID SHUT UP!" I yelled as I reached for my dagger and took a swing at the man, only to find myself falling into a great void, a long fall which ended when I found myself sprawled on the floor of my room.
"Damnable nightmares.." I muttered as I pulled myself up towards the bed.
And all the while I could hear the man's last words resonating in my head:
"The skies cry for the blood of the wicked, and you, shall deliver"
