History
Sana was born on Midsummers’ day, to her father, Gregorin Nighthart, a blacksmith, and her mother Elizabeth, a housewife.

For the first five years of her days, Sana led a peaceful and uneventful life, the daughter of a common blacksmith on the outskirts of Waterdeep. Her father spent his days in the unforgiving heat of his stall, making not only weapons and armors, but an array of useful metal items, such as horseshoes, tools, locks and latches. Business was enough that the family was able to live comfortably, though they were no more than an upper class of peasant.

It was in her fifth year her mother had fallen ill, from an unknown sickness. Gregorin began to spend more time with his bedridden wife, while Sana watched on. Progress was made and her health seemed to be restoring. All seemed well until later that year one morning, Elizabeth Nighthart did not wake from her sleep. Sana was too young to understand, but her Father was heartbroken. His grieving kept him from his work, and the livelihood of the two started to decline. The two were in poverty as business was tough. Sana wanted to do something, anything, to help her father. She would even drag him into his stall, cheerful, and scream at passerby to draw attention.

By Sana’s tenth year, her father was unable to stabilize his work and income, and Sana began to experience days without food. Strangely enough her father caught a boy attempting to steal from his stall, and finding that the child was orphaned, gave him the choice to work off his crimes. The boy, Toman, was only two years older than Sana, and the two developed a close friendship as both worked in the stalls during the days, and sneak off on adventures in the night. Toman was an able pickpocket and thief, and while he held such back from the prying eyes of his Master, he began to teach Sana little by little.

Sana at first was against the idea but then dedicated herself to learning what the boy had to offer; she could use any goods or proceeds to help her father. Sneaking away in the night, the two would move closer towards the city and steal whatever they could, often foods and small amounts of coin. Sana’s own abilities grew, though not to any extent of Toman’s, and she grew confident. Not to mention as the years past, the two started to fall for one another.

When she was 13 years old, Sana made a daring attempt at stealing from a passing merchant. She was caught red handed, and dragged to her father’s stall by his guards, who demanded an explanation. Gregorin was angered at his daughter’s actions, and remembering Toman’s first attempts at stealing from him, laid the blame on the boy. The Merchant, however, was uncaring. He was going to take her to the Watch, and the penalty was surely going to be severe.

It took a timely intervention from Sana’s Uncle Martin, who happened to be visiting. Martin Nighthart was a Master Carpenter, and was involved in the politics of the Guilds. Convincing the Merchant of the simpleton mistake of the girl, through careful words and a bag of coin, he was able to free Sana.
Martin demanded the two move into the City with him, and that his brother begin work in the Guilds. He was able to land Gregorin some work as an apprentice. Gregorin stubbornly accepted, leaving his stall and home, along with the bad memories. The two moved into a small home within the South Ward, where Sana would spend the remainder of her childhood.

As Gregorin began his work, Sana was placed in entry level schooling. The schooling not only focused on basic education, but much more on the properness of a Lady. She excelled in the basics and while she paid attention to her teachings in properness, it was noted a clear lack of interest on her part. In the summertime she found herself enjoying working with her father. She was taught the processes of forging and while she pressed to learn more, her father counteracted with sending her on errands. Occasionally Martin would give her opportunities riding along in short distance caravans; he seen a potential as a Merchant.

One of these Caravans headed out into the outskirt villages familiar to Sana. She enjoyed the opportunity to revisit her first home, and unknowing to her, the Caravan would reveal some surprises that would change her forever. While on the return trip going through the countryside her attention was grabbed as she saw movement in one of the Supply Wagons ahead. Carefully she made her way over and stepped inside- to be greeted by Toman himself. It had been three years since the two had been together, and they rekindled their friendship and lost love in the confines of the Wagon. This was brought to a halt by a terrifying noise- the clash of blades.

Sana peered out of the Wagon to find a scene of conflict, between the Merchant Guards and a large group of Bandits. They were in the countryside and by the looks of it miles from any settlement. Worse, the Bandits were heavily armed and winning the battle. As the fighting shifted elsewhere Sana turned to find Toman taking a sword from a box. He assured her they were going to be alright and slipped out of the tent telling Sana to stay put. She could not obey.

Jumping out after him she came around the Wagon only to find a most horrifying scene- Toman in combat with a Bandit. The large man was deflecting Toman’s swings with a spear, almost effortlessly. Sana began to scream as he then thrust the Spear through the boy. Feeling herself grabbed, perhaps by another bandit, she struggled away and ran towards Toman. The boy was already dead, a lifeless stare meeting her eyes. She could not control herself and sobbed, as Toman’s killer approached her with a toothy grin that only marked trouble. Meeting his eyes she bolted away only to feel an immense pain as the spear pierced her shoulder. Pain from her wound and heart swelled up, along with thoughts of imminent death or worse. It was a terrible moment, and to her surprise was swiftly ended by the pounding hoofs of a charging City Guard Patrol.

Sana survived the encounter, but remained haunted by it. Watching her former lover ran through with a Spear, and experiencing the pain herself, ingrained a fear and hatred of weapons. Even later in her Father’s stall, she would rarely touch or help with any blade he created.

She continued her schooling and life as best she could, though the remaining years in Waterdeep were tough for her. Her grieving was unfounded by her Father, who laid the blame on Toman. Gregorin decided to keep his Daughter much closer, fearing for her safety. Sana rarely went far from the South Ward, and only then with the company of her Father or his new apprentice, Jeram. The young man treated Sana more as a younger sister, which kept any worries from her father.

In Sana’s 17th year, she found herself becoming interested in Magic. At this point, she did not know of her abilities, and was only left fascinated by the workings of the Mages she encountered. A temple of Mystra was nearby her home, and there she spent some time learning of the deity (Her father had her attending services of Gond to this point). Sana was soon noted as having the ability of the Arcane herself, a surprise indeed. With tuition rates of the notable Arcane Schools much too expensive, however, she could only learn here and there from those at the Temple.

Nearing the end of her 18th year, a Rumor of cheaper academies in the South drew Sana’s attentions. She began to work to convince her Father that she needed to go, and eventually won his favor through some convincing from friends at the temple. Martin and Gregorin pitched in and paid Sana’s way on a Merchant ship headed to Baldur’s Gate. Sana said her goodbyes and boarded the ship, looking forward to the new beginning.
