Richard Hariss V: A rogue in Ranger's Clothing

Unread post by MrFester420 »

Day 1:

Cold. That's all he is.. My father, a statue of a man, is a cold hearted man to say the least.

"Here, Richard, take this bow and go out into the world. Prove yourself. I have heard Jorn is offering 25 Gold per wolf hide that you bring him. You want to be rich, you want to be famous, this is the path to your desires."

Then he handed me his old practice bow, the God forsaken piece of excrement that it is, and sent me to Baldur's Gate to find a man named Jorn. It took hours just to figure out where he was, but I did it, in spite of that old codger I call my father. And sure enough, the rumor was true. 25 Gold per wolf hide.

Being the big elf I am I grabbed a quiver's worth of arrows from the local merchant and headed south along the trade way ready to begin making my mark.

"They're only wolves" I told myself. How tough can they be. Boy, was I mistaken. I hadn't counted on the countless phase spiders, bandits and snakes that accompanied the wolves. It wasn't long before I ended up in the Bone Castle begging for another chance at life. I hate begging.

The air hit my lungs like a runaway chariot as I was thrown back to the Elf Song Tavern. It took a moment to regain my composure before gathering the courage to head back out into the farmlands once again. On my way out a farmer grabbed me and asked me to find his family pet, a rat of all things, and return it safely. Hs I not needed the money I would have killed the loathesome thing myself. But a small coin purse is a small coin purse regardless.

Day 2:

Today I ventured back out along the trade route to hunt more wolves. As luck would have It, I bumped into a couple people that were on there way to hunt a bit further south along the trade route. Oh, the things I saw there. Living moss and lizard men that could use arcane magic. Crazy, I dare say. Thankfully, the gnome we were with, unfortunately a girl, had some amazing abilities. She would simply shout one word and these things would explode into a thousand pieces before us. They showed how to better use my bow as well as work more synergistically within nature. I actually felt myself becoming more powerful while I was there. Sadly, my lack of attention got the best of me and I ended up with another trip to the bone castle. After begging for another chance once more I decided it best to retire for the day.

Day 3
Today was awful. It seemed as though the day would never end. All it involved was sitting around the forsaken campfire hoping something more exciting would come along. Well, I suppose it did. Eventually. I made an befuddled orc look smart today when I fainted. All because one of those succubi, also known as a woman, attempted to eat my soul. Of course she tried to say she was just trying to shake my hand, but I know better.

All women are eaters of souls. They lure a man in with promise of love eternal and eventually leave him alone, no desire for anything in life other than sheer will to live. They suck his hopes and dreams out and leave him an empty husk of a human being. It's not their fault, I understand, it is the way the Gods planned it. The sooner one recognizes this the sooner one can find peace within their own life.

After her attempted attack I ran. Never have I felt less like a man than I did then. Running from a woman. My father would be so proud. Finally the succubus left and I was able to return to the fire and sharpen my blade. For I had a feeling the next day would be far more entertaining.

Day 4

Boy was I right about today. Much more entertainment, if you want to call it that. So I was coming back from testing my new bow in the graveyard when I ran into someone that would change my life. Thomas Oak. Not the most...intelligent? No, that's not right. Not the wisest of men, that's for sure. I mean, really, by the Nines this guy was naive. First off, he darned near knocked me out when he nudged me, then he starts swinging his mace around as if it were a party horn. Almost knocked me out again. Anyway, I guess that's not really the point.

We ended up meeting up with Paus and Laya. Paus was an awesome icon of power. He was able to destroy some monsters with his bare hands. It was incredible. And Laya. She swore to me in her native elven tongue that she would not eat my soul, so I really had no choice but to allow here to tag along with us. We were headed to Beregost and the road can get kind of treacherous, so I figured if anything attacked us I could push her out in front. But did our plans ever get waylaid.

We had reached the Friendly Arms Inn and ran into some crazy old codger talking about how he needed a tooth from something called a Worg. I didn't really know what the thing was, but I figured what the hey? He was offering 600 gold for one tooth. How bad could it be?

After some more senseless banter, and Thomas running off after some guy like he had a guy crush, we finally headed off in search of this worg thing. One word about those woods. Werewolves. I have never seen these awesome creatures before, but they were magnificent. So strong and fast. So powerful. A little vicious, but incredible.

Well, long story short the darned things killed me. Had it not been for Thomas' desire to drag me home I surely would have been left to be a meal for the wolves. But sure enough, they bit me. Even after the cleric returned me to this world I felt...different. Where the bite was, something was not right. The flesh seemed hot. It seemed to radiate throughout my whole side. Something was changing. But what? Where could I find the answers?

I had managed to pry a tooth from a dead werewolf. Perhaps that could get me some answers. Or would it just yield some more questions?
