Recurring DM NPCs

Unread post by rokranon »

The old forum had a thread like this, so I thought it would be useful to have one here, too. The purpose is so that players and DMs alike can keep track of recurring characters DMs use in their events. Anything posted here should be considered common knowledge and therefore not metagamed material if used in game.

DM Rokranon's NPCs

Dragon War
Plantagonox:
An adult bronze dragon, Plantagonox found himself near Baldur's Gate and Candlekeep when traveling south from his home near Waterdeep. Upon hearing of the evils in this region, he decided to stay and lend his aid to anyone or any group with good hearts. As a servant of Bahamut, he has sworn to destroy the ancient white dragon Laximurkcion, who is rumored to be favored by Tiamat. Plantagonox was recently slain by no less than three white dragons, but not before taking down two by himself.

Acophisinian
This aging blue dragon is bored most of the time. He frequently stirs up trouble simply to have something to do. That being said, he seems less bloodthirsty overall than other dragons of his type. Acophisinian is known to enjoy bardic entertainment.

Churches
High Priest of Torm Celwig Olwen
(Created by Sen) Olwen is a kind man, but unyielding. He firmly believes any not devoted to Torm's life of service should find another deity to serve.

Preston Truesteel
A knight of Torm, Sir Davon is not as high ranking as Arkaine HalfOrken or Sir Jonas Rokranon. He aspires to join the Order of the Radiant Heart some day, when he establishes himself and his name.

Other
Travanex the Demilich:
A self-proclaimed member of the Twisted Rune, a cabal of liches, Travanex loves to torment adventurers with all manner of evil creatures, most notably hordes of undead, baatezu, and tanar'ri. He claims to want to unite the lower planes with the Prime, but who can believe a lich?

Warlock Demonologist (Kelorin Darkstone)
Another one who favors beings from the lower planes, little else is known about this seldom-seen warlock.

Arkdon Morn
A crazy old wizard who seems more attached to his hat than any person ever should.

The Ancient One
Almost nothing is known about this one outside of the Keepers of the Elder Circle. He is rumored to be extremely old and fights fiercely for nature.

The following are NPCs I use that are already established in FR lore:

Ulraunt, Keeper of Tomes
(Lawful Good, human male, wizard/scholar 10th level). The head of fortified Candlekeep, Ulraunt is a proud scholar, one of the most learned – and one of the most haughty – people in all Faerûn. His sharp tongue, large nose, and dark-eyed, hawklike gaze have earned him the nickname ”the Old Buzzard” among acolytes down the years – a term that has even crept into general use in the Coast lands. Ulraunt has access to more spells than most wizards see in their lives, and he reportedly keeps in practice casting them in his private turret chamber and in caverns deep beneath Candlekeep. A secret passage is said to connect these heights and depths. He bears a magical staff of office rumored to be a staff of the magi with extra, extremely potent powers. Ulraunt and those among the Great Readers who are wizards have access to spell scrolls all over Candlekeep – scrolls hidden behind wooden panels and within false tomes. Ulraunt’s chief interest is acquiring ever more information. His aims in life are unknown beyond making Candlekeep the seat of a land of scholars and a power on the political stage of Faerûn. Several tales link him with young ladies of various noble houses, Waterdeep, and Tethyr in his earlier years – and there’s a newer rumor tying him romantically to some of the icy-cold, haughty elven ladies who come to the Sword Coast from Evermeet.

Tethtoril, First Reader
(Lawful Good, human male, priest of Mystra, 18th level). This tall, impressive, and softspoken man is often mistaken for the Keeper of Tomes of Candlekeep. He is more intelligent, regal, and sensitive than his superior Ulraunt, by far – and Ulraunt knows it. Yet Tethtoril is unfailingly loyal, and diligent in his duties, often anticipating troubles and preparing beforehand to spare Candlekeep troubles – or Ulraunt any embarrassment. Most Holy Mystra often whispers to Tethtoril in his dreams, bidding him to do this or that – and in this way has led him to unearth spells from forgotten tomes; kept Elminster, Khelben, and the Harpers tolerated in Candlekeep; and prevented Ulraunt from being seduced by darker powers.

Most Radiant of Lathander, Kelddath Ormlyr
(Neutral Good, human male priest, 16th level). Governor of Beregost and high priest of the temple to Lathander there, Kelddath is a patient, energetic supporter of local improvement. He’s always advising or lending money to new local businesses and to farmers trying to expand or modernize their holdings. His temple troops police the town attentively and try to prevent adventurers and others from exploring local ruins. Any rowdiness or lawlessness is swiftly and harshly dealt with. Kelddath wants Beregost to have a reputation for being the safest Sword Coast town in order to encourage trade and travel.

Shadow of the Aria
An inherently cruel man, believed to be a Drow. He was first made known in a wide-spread show of revenge towards women (which his crazed mind has a personal vendetta against due to his past). He wielded incredible dark power, presumably from Shar, and has now seemed to vanish into nowhere, with barely a word. The last time he was seen, he was wearing a red cowl and was wielding two daggers that seemed to draw the very light from the space around them and cast darkness about the blades.

Drakus De'Vossos
A powerful vampire lord, apparently able to teleport almost at will over short or long distances through the use of some unknown spell. He is proud, cruel, and enjoys toying with his intended victims. He stands tall, with pointed ears and black hair, possibly a half-elf in life, wielding a scimitar that crackles with negative energy. No record of him is found in the Candlekeep library. He seems to have a personal vendetta against Valerius, the cause of which is largely unknown.

Foreigner
A foreign woman has been asking about Valerius of Candlekeep, but has stopped attempting contact for the last few weeks. Beyond this, she is largely unknown.

The Potato Salesman
A now-wealthy halfling once traveled the Sword Coast region peddling sacks of Gullykin-grown potatoes. His invention of a "potato golem" with the help of a local hedge wizard has been met with varying opinions.
DM Phantom: "I can't escape from him...I never will."

Tessian Silene: You can't be serious. Seriously. You can't.

The Wizard Aurican

Image

A mysterious wizard who at one point was leasing the laboratory on the second floor of Sorceries Sundries. Not much is known about him, not even his race. He does however seem to possess a strange sense of humor, and his laboratory is staffed by small, odd creatures in black robes, which Aurican speaks to in an unknown language. It is rumored that he currently has several ties to the shadier society of Baldur’s Gate, and apparently has a lab deep beneath the ruins of Ulcaster.

Captain Cross

Image

A stern, no nonsense man, Captain Cross is one of the officers of the Flaming Fist in charge of criminal investigations, and is extremely effective at his job. Generally he just wishes to get his duties finished as quickly and as efficiently as possible, and has been known to allow adventurers to assist him in certain investigations and operations across the city. Typically he doesn’t stray far from the Gate, and prefers to remain in his office while his soldiers take care of the dirty work.

However, a recent shift amongst the officer corps has seen Captain Cross tack a more active roll in field operations, and he seems to be conducting a rather large investigation at the moment.

Arch Mage Tellsane of the Cowled Wizards

Arch Mage Tellsane is a high ranking member of the Cowled Wizards who has been seen about the lands of the Sword Coast from time to time. Usually in the company of a horde of well trained bodyguards, Tellsane can be seen staying at the most expensive inns in the area. He doesn’t generally speak to those that he has no business with, but those that do are spoken to in a very respectful manner, and given the utmost attention.

Recent rumors suggest that he was the one who orchestrated the current alliance between the Cowled Wizards of Athkatla and the Weave Masters of Baldur’s Gate, but little other information is known about the Arch Mage, whom it seems prefers it that way.

Lately, the Arch Mage has been spotted near the constuction efforts to rebuild Nashkel, and it has been said that the Cowled Wizards have also struck up an alliance of sorts with the Nashkel Trade Emporium.

Dunagin Mallastar

Dunagin is a brown bearded dwarf who sports a fanciful feathered hat and expensive clothing. He seems to prefer a life of luxury, which seems strange considering his position as one of the main trading partners of Torggier Mining Company. He frequently likes to hire wandering adventurers for what he calls "interesting jobs"

His younger brother, Ninagun, is frequently getting lost, and the two dwarves constantly bicker between themselves, and their grandfather, and elder dwarf by the name of Rukanar. All of the Mallastars are good friends with Otto Goldstein.

Dumont

Dumont is a rugged man who’s face features a large scar across his cheek that gives him a rather sardonic look. He is frequently seen about the Docks District of Baldur’s Gate, and seems to enjoy the atmosphere of the Elfsong Tavern in the evenings. His accent matches that of the folk of Neverwinter, yet it is evident that Dumont is a well traveled man who has seen much of the realms. A sheathed rapier is always at his side, just visible beneath his brown cloak.

Despite his rough and scruffy appearance, he is well educated, and can tell a tale quite well. He is often found at a quiet table in the Elfsong, and after someone buys him a drink he is usually keen enough to share stories of his adventures. As travelers converse with him, they generally feel at ease as Dumont’s kind nature shows itself, though some state that his stories are merely made up for entertainment. Whatever the realities are behind his stories, none can deny however, that he knows how to hold an audience, and his rugged good looks seem to charm several of his female listeners.
