If you Shapechange, or Polymorph other players can attack you for being a "monster". When that takes place, I simply flee in whatever form I was in and usually the agressors tend to give up the chase after I've won my 173th tumble roll.
Were my character lawful good, he or she would simply forgive such actions taken place, however, since my character is indeed Chaotic Evil by alignment and more than willing to extract appropriate 'justice'.
In othewords, leaving the cave and waiting for the aggressors to come out. I let them log in, begin their rest and get back up undisturbed - before launching an appropriate offence. (In addition, the aggressors have been hostiled ever since their initial attack.)
Now I've been doing that few times now, three in total. Am I violating PvP rules? I would say that I am not, because tactical retreat does not equal to forfeiting the PvP incident.

They're hostiled, and you have an RP reason for going after them. So far, so good.
Just make sure you give them an RP out before each attack, and you're golden.

Sounds to me like the "RP out" would be to not attack the polymorphed in the first place: It's not as though you as a player can accidentally attack a polymorphed character.
Just my two cents.

If a troll walked up your campfire, you would not feel threatened? Keep in mind that OOC does not equal IC. An IC reaction is what your character would do if he or she were real in a given situation. OOC is clicking on a toon and selecting attack. With either of my characters, a troll represents a very real threat and one that should be fought off, or killed. Hence the attack on sight for some polymorph shapes.

Re: Shapechanging/polymorphing and the right for vengeance.
I've had a lot of experiences with this particular issue. Often times I have been called "trolling for pvp" seeing as how I'm often a wolf or elemental or whathaveyou. I take great lengths to provide as little pvp window as possible, by reducing my size, emoting non-threatening and such. I often even aid "unsure" adventurers with lvl 1-3 spells so they're at least on the favorable side of dubious.
I would suggest that you be very careful about what you do and where you do it. If people are "forced" to RP a hostile situation because that's what their characters would do in any instance where a monster walked up, you will not be friends with the DMs. And they will let you know. Trust me.
If I were you, I'd just bite the bullet on these encounters. If they follow you through a transition, go slaughter them, but that's because they're no longer "defending" themselves, and they're out to get you. Just don't do this too often because you -did- take the RP out (running away) and they did die. A DM will be involved sooner or later, but you'll have the "they chase me!" portion on your side. Again, repeats of this will be considered trolling for pvp, but there's no reason someone defending themselves would ever have to transition in pursuit to do so.
