From there to here: the tale of Althea

Unread post by blackdove »

She stands on the wooden deck overlooking the sea, a light breeze playing with her hair. Her beautiful brown wide eyes are filled with tears, ready to spill, her lovely face streaked from recent spills of tears.

Below, far below, seagulls cry, and the surf pounds on rocks , making them majestic and white. The air is salty and fresh, warm and alive with a tropical sense. Into this water, the woman looks, gripping the railing in front of her. removing the red outfit that has defined her most of her life in one way or another, she tosses it , into the sea.. memories flash in her ind, as she prepares to follow.. new tears rise...

What drive her to prepare to dive, to end a life so young? It is much, but not alot, the shattering of innocence, of joy. She sees ,again in her mind , the body of the elf, tortured in a unspeakable way, until dead, then dumped at the Temples steps, the symbols of many dark gods carved into the flesh or burned there, a message sent that evil was not going to bow to the light.

The woman now standing ready to fly away forever,to dark night, had once been a woman who dances in revel in the streets, who brought joy and pleasure in her goddesses name to many, and who was somehow untouched by the evil that walked the land, until that night. That night, the horror she saw shattered her innocence, stilled her dance, killed her joy. That night, at least in her, the darkness dealt a near mortal blow.

Some may have found it odd, that one so young and full of life should now stand on the brink of death, but they underestimated how delicate she was as she healed. It had not taken a big blow to push her the rest of the way until now.
Crying now, she looks around, saying good bye,and begins to climb the rail...

[Before she can complete the task a voice crises out...

'Stop ! what do you think you are doing!'
Had the voice happened a split second sooner, when she was looking around to say good bye, her story would be done. But she is so startled, not expecting any to speak, she freezes. It is all he needs to grab her. He is stronger than her, and easily pulls her away.
Let me GO!! she says kicking and screaming, but he refuses holding her tightly until the sorrow overwhelms her again, and she loses all fight. He covers her, and takes her away from the cliff.

Six months laterr

The woman is in prayer when she is truely called . The tears tears have lessened , over time, but the pain is still fresh to her and she spends many hours aday curled , in dark thoughts. It is into one of hese moments, whenher pain dips, that the vision happens. The room fills with light, so bright it is seen through tight lids. Stasartled she looks up. Before her stand an old man, hands wounded but bound. his eyes are fuilled at once with pain and also healing.
Althea.. I feel your pain.. he says as he touches her
I will not heal it, for I will not have you forget that evil is real. But, I will bear it withyou. Go.. now.. heal others, heal their pain, save them from going to the path of destruction. Do not embrace evil, but do embrace those who hurt.
when the light fades, the woman still weeps, but the despair is now less. Guided by Ilmatar, She goes by boat to baldurs gate, and and there stays at the shrine working and helping, until she is ready. Then , one day, she is. and she goes forth..to honor her god, and heal.

Early she rises to pray, seeking guidance and strength. There area few on her mind this day.
She mentions Frost.

I ask for guidance he seems so much to push others away. Must I do what i suspect will heal him? or will in get in the way of helping others?
She asks of shirtza
who is this woman who wears red as one of those evil wizards? She denies she is one, but I can sense something about her. She may hinder frost also.
She mentions another in red
She played dice, and was taught hard to not mock, though she likely did not see, There is a unsettling darkness ..it is not from her so much as on her. I wonder what it is? give me insight .
she mentions one more
He has his face covered but cannot hide behind the words of his heart he mutters. He says its better to let someone die quick..what pain drives him to wish to die ?
She finishes her prayer
Great healer, guide me in this and give me strength..you send so many my way.. and i know so little
She then rises and begins her day, simple duties which include washing, and arranging her tangled hair as best she can. Then she goes forth to do as she was told.. to heal, to enbrace the hurting, but not the evil.

Unceremoniously, someone drops a body into the camp fire. many flee from the initial smell, including her, though she does not totally disappear. She goes to the flaming fist man first.
His response is dismally silent, but she does not let that bother her. As soon as she realizes he will not come aid her, she marches back to the fire removing her cloak. She removes her water too, as two people watch and another walks up.

Casting a spell to regenerate her soon wounds, she begins. She plunges her hands into the flame, the fire singing her hands, sending up a new scent of burned flesh. her wounds heal as she pulls out what is now bones. she does this several times until she has gotten what she can.. she pours water on the remains to cool them, and has not enough for her fire damaged hands, which heal only to a point of blisters. She then gathers the remains in her cloak, thus ruining it. Behind her the hin gets sick. the other two just watch. She walks off taking the bones to a priest.

later One prays to heal her hands. he heals them enough to close the wounds. By morning the her palms are again blistered. she prays then writes:

How does one fight evil?By smiting the cause itself, pouring holy water on he vile unholy flame. By warning others to not go near said vile flame, standing guard and forcing away if they must, those who would enter said vile unholy flame flame. But what of those who stumble in, or are carelessly tossed into, the flame?

Many are caught in the heat of evil unable to break free. and others must help them.plunging into the fire and rescuing those caught and bringing them out. Let those of helm warn, and guard and keep others away, or those of mighty Tyr smite the flames, and put them out. I will go though fire to embrace those who hurt and need rescue.Let those who fight fight, I am a healer, I will heal. and rescue.

She spends most the next couple days training. Someone finds her some robes she can wear, and a brush old and worn. while she does not feel good using it, feeling a bit odd using a used brush, she nevertheless is very happy her hair is again combable.
she also spends much time in prayer, making mention of frost. In her journal she writes:

I let him go into the flame, though it pained me to have done that. I seek not just to meet needs, so base, something of another goddess. I seek to heal his soul.

Oh ilmater, help me to bear.. for I saw part of my pain repeated. letting one go as you would command, making sure they are strong enough to go their way be it good or ill..ready to be burned when they are in danger..ready to heal...when they again need rescue.. help me

She spends much time praying for this.. now focusing on her task. To embrace the one who hurts but not his evil

She sits in front of a mirror, using her brand new brush. It is one with strong teeth, and big enough to brush her thick hair The handle is black inlaid with turquoise. It is a nice brush but nicer still to her. it is a gift.

She thinks back to when he bought it, and just after. The pain as he opened to her, the doubt, the fear that mirrored her own. The scar, the heart rending story he shared. so painful that she could only bear a moment. Now, she smiles and brushes her hair.when she is done she writes.

All those days when I used fingers to brush my hair, no one offered much more than to give me advise how to fight tangles. I finally found one donated, and was happy.
Yet he bought me a brush.Bought a new one too! They all see the angry man striking out and do not see the kind man i see, and saw. They do not see he pain he feels, hear his cries in his words.
He has finally let me in, but his healing is not likely to happen so much as I will be bearing his pain with him. I followed my god. I refused to stop caring and it worked. Now.. the hard part comes.

I can only hope he realizes now seeing another in pain is near unbearable to me. he has told me not to intercede again.. and for him , I will..at least pysically

She suddenly stops, drops to her knees and prays ..

Ilmater, guide me and strengthen me, his pain is so much more than I had imagined. How can i bear it also? by your grace. Let this not be something he regrets. I have reached into the flame, and have embraced him . Now, help me bear his pain with him.
Rising she goes to about her duty and joy, helping serve those who come, seeking her god at the shrine.

She returns to where she sleeps, a bit worse for wear than normal. She cleans herself, and changes her bandages. the hands have still not healed. She brushes her hair thinking as she does, then she writes in her growing journal..which a book cover with no pages except what she writes and places in side. .
such an odd day. I met this woman by candle keep. She kept saying I should heal myself and that Ilmatar was cruel for not healing my pain. Her words near made sense, and I was beginning to think I should reach out to her then she said something that made my heart clench a bit.

She said she could relieve me of my pain. Make it go away. In one sentence she says' I do not get my power from lickspittles who grovel at a gods feet' then she promises what even my god refused me? She says I am to blame for my hands not healing, that if I cannot even heal my self what good am I? And she was insistent!

I know that Ilmatar teaches if a person insists on going the path they choose, I am not to stop them, I can heal them though. But she was not offering that freedom. I will have to be careful of her. I do not think she is one of those in pain needing help..I think she is one of those who is evil, one who causes the pain, and the flame...

I met a man named ruben today. He has a request for me. he follows Ilmater also,, but has a burden he asked me to help with. He said the living saint could have helped but shes not here. I will have to find out how to help him. I promised i would.
After I left him i was waylaid by ruffians. i was able to defend myself, but I was sure glad when Lady Niyenne finished them off fast. I was so sad too. I know the ruffians made thier choice, i know they would have killed us, I know they deserved their fate, but.. they had families i am sure. They died alone. How many of them ended up here becasue of the pain they felt at one point in their life!
Lady Niyenne comforted me though. The only concern i have is, she suggested maybe they were watching me. Now I am concerned for ruben.

I also have heard more of this Kalma sister Arabella mentioned. Hes a pirate, and a worshiper of Talos! He tried to sacrifice someone to talos too! That poor man! the almost sacrifice, not Kalma. I know he has chosen his fate.

I have heard rumors of Bhaal worship! Here, again! I am so disturbed, worshipers of talos and Bhaal? This needs to stop! Maybe the red wizards are not harming anyone right now.. though i am so convinced they are as evil as they can be. Maybe I cannot fight them and their slave using ways where they drain the magic from a soul.. but we cannot..as an ilmatari I CANNOT.. allow this to be unchallenged. I need to talk to someone.

she falls to her knees crying and prays her burden to her god

Great broken one who bears my pain, who heals those that are broken, who reaches into the flames of evil to help those in pain and suffering, pulling them out in mighty deliverance,.. guild this your vessel. Give her strength and wisdom, fill her with your divine majestic might.. let her be able to bear what is coming on her .
She the rises, wipes her tears, and goes to sleep

Althea sits a the desk in the room she has rented with the gracious help of the orc Katyla. She is quiet listening for any stirring from the room next door. She is not tire herself, her eyes red from almost no sleep. she looks to the bed, then back to the desk and writes.

She is sleeping now. The orc Katyla has proved a very valuable ally . I even hugged her.. although i still expected her to bite me. I could not help it! Orcs are scary. But she is very kind. And I was very happy for her help.

I keep waiting for her to awake , but the potion worked so far. I have been checking in often and she seems to be doing well.I will get some sleep in a moment.

I keep hearing how some hate those who follow the good gods. Sometimes loyalty causes one to want to prove it in a fierce fashion. It does not mean the one they follow is bad, or good if the follow a bad sort,it just means the ones who are fervent are very protective and loyal.

Katyla told me whom to speak with concerning my other patient. I will speak to aranath first. Someone tossed a body in the fire again and without hesitation he pulled it out. And he heals without question too, and he brings light t and laughter when he comes. hes a good man .

I do not know kald, but I know I will also speak with him, just in case. he sounds like a fighter of evil.. and this task may be difficult. . after I sleep though. And after My new friend awakes and I am sure she is well. It will be easier to tend to her now that she will be awake.

She told me to best leave the red wizards alone, and I have plenty of work here anyway, but I am having trouble with that. I have heard of the horrors of thay , and I am concerned for ones people will not miss here. It would be so painful should the begin to steal a person here and there..I shall begin to pay closer attention to those we serve.

I do find it hard to understand how a red wizard can be a citizen of the kingdom, yet, should one enter even the land their enclave sits on,they are in thay. Are the thayans still citizens if we have to obey their laws in their enclave? I need to let this be. But should they harm and begin to act the evil they are, I think that can be used.

she kneels and prays
Ilmater , bearer of my pain...Thank you for this orc you have sent, and for guiding me to those who can help in my other task. Give me strength to endure,as i embrace those who hurt, and strike out.
She then gets some sleep..but even in sleep an ear listens for any movement in the next room... well..intil she falls full asleep anyway.

The happy girl who seeks to bear others burdens, does not always smile when alone. Those close to her know her burden and pain, although she has tried to not let it hinder her, nor let it be so loud it is all others can see. For her god does help her bear it.

She is burdened today , as she often is, with the weight of others who suffer. she puts her brush down and writes

I have found someone who can help ruben. Dannic has offered to aid me. Now I just need to find the ruben.

Dannic is a paladin of tyr, and a strong man of his god. Like Tyr, he also has a very strong sense of Justice, that comes out in his words. He could easily be one of those who are so lost in justice he forgets that mercy and compassion are also good for rescuing those who perish in their pain. While his fervor for his god is comforting in a way, it also seems cold to me.

Today we spoke of the treasures goblins get, and how. It made me weep and he responded that there is much death in the land, as if I should accept it and not care, beyond coldly culling the vessels of evil.. Frost also say the same to me. "life is pain get used to it and learn to curb your desire to heal so that it is more effective. ' though he is also right in a way,I cannot help it . If I see some suffer it hurts me too, especially when i can not alleviate it.

Aranath asked me to consider joining the order, and part of me resists . when I speak to such as the half orc, who had the strength to gallantly fight his beastly nature, and believes that being broken by the cruelty of this world is not excuse for not having strength to stand,. Or dannic who coldly says those who break the law must be punished, no matter they were broken, and no matter maybe a kind word or a bit of caring might pull them from the flames of death.

But.. maybe that's my duty, to care, and speak of mercy , to remind them that justice without mercy and compassion is tyranny, and more fitting of a banite than a paladin of tyr. Perhaps I need them, lest my compassion and mercy allows evil to flourish. This may be a bad idea.. but..

She kneels to pray
Ilmater , the one who bears my pain and burden, I ask you to bless me now. Give me strength and wisdom to aid those who serve the blinded god, and help them have compassion also, as they help me not let evil flourish.Let me, as you, aid those who serve law that life may flourish. also.. give me wisdom to help Julindra bear her pain.
he decision made she rises, and goes to find someone one who may be good friends with Mia, she hopes, and also Ruben.

She does not sleep well this night, though she remembers her chosen duty to help her friend.she wrestles through the night, with something she heard, with the sights of what she saw today, causing her to weep much, and which does still. She finally returns a final time to her room then she writes.
I am glad Julindra will be my friend. I am glad also for frost.Julindea truly is wise, and shes borne more than her share of pain. shew may not be of my faith but her best friend was,and Julindra is an aid to me, and others. No wonder she is so tired.
as for frost.. His way of mimicking the way a tyrian speaks is more gentle.I am sure he would be offended being compared to a tyrian . I should not tell him that. he has had enough pain. but I am very glad he's a friend.More even.I am glad I am free to give him as much as he needs of me.

Her prayers are silent ,as she kneels this night, , and she falls asleep kneeling.

After a long night readying and a long morning serving others at the ilmater shrine Althea finally takes some time to go pray and think. As she sits and thinks, in quiet, a scene plays in her mind..

It begins at the hall where she served as a acolyte. There is a party going on. the room filled with smoke The scent of wine , food, and people permeates every corner. she is a hostess today, this is the first time she has been in public in weeks.
She spies in this crowd a man who is angelic in stature and looks, so handsome he is almost beautiful by any human standards.Eyes that are intense, yet filled with compassion , with strength, are set in a face that is sternly strong yet mercifully soft at once. he speaks to her in a voice so soothing and calm that she goes with him to a corner and she pours her pain to him, and he , with words, kind and understanding, comforts the priestess who has ceased to dance, or desire any pleasure.

In her mind the days fly as in seconds, as she begins to heal, to laugh. she learns he is a servant of all three triune gods. Tyr, imater and torm. She is happy again soon enough, but weak of spirit still still wounded. so when she finds him with a favored of myrkul.. when he defends the one who evil pours off of like a flood, threatening to kill her, when she finds that even one who is so holy as to be thrice blessed can fall to the clutches of evil...'

She blinks and the scene dissolves. she wipes her eyes with bandaged hands, and she gets her journal, and writes

Going into the temple, speaking with lance and aranath and taron, I could not help feeling concern, in spite of my conviction this is a good way to go. A god is not subject to temptations as mortals are. The good dieties are not tempted to join with the evil, nor the other way around.

I think what has concerned me, if anything, is I have not just seen the evil done to innocents, but I have seen it drag even one blessed of gods to its side.I am not sure an order of men wil be any less vunerable. But..

These are good people, compassionate people, who desire to insure people may live in peace and security , protected from evil. And all they seem to care about concerning me is that I have the blessed freedom to heal, and relieve the suffering of others. They do not seem to demand more from me. That means so much more to me than they know.

We will see. This is a courtship , and it is not going to be rushed. We will know before it is to late, if this will work.. if I will be able to freely heal and bear the burdens of those who suffer, and not be forced to choose between duty and my god.

she rests then, not before a prayer, for all those she is coming to love.

she spends more time reading in the temple and at one point her face grows pale. she leaves then, and later when she finds Aranath she speaks to him. After she has trouble sleeping, late into the night struggling with the decision made. Her prayers are silent. Finally he speaks to her. Finally she writes.
These burned hands of mine bear witness I was not wrong. But I may be wrong not to bear this . I will try to find aranath first. I must insure that what I must do causes the least pain possible.

al night a candle burns in her room, and she checks on her patient every half hour, examining the dressing and changing it when needed, making him as comfortable as she can. If he wakes, she gives him a very small dose the sleeping potion, mixed with juice so the man does not run away before his body has time to heal. Shee prays , she also writes, when waiting for her rounds.
It amazing how fast I forgot shes an orc. She is very kind, and even though her tusks are long and sharp , in her eyes is an intelligent compassion .
I have heard stories of her, of how she used to take the shape of an undead. If anything she is proof that even the most vile of the races can find some redemption if given time. still.. I need to remember shes not going to be welcome everywhere. I almost got the poor woman impaled because she was helping me get my newest patient here. I need to see about getting some sort of infirmity nearer to the camp.

Done writing, she resumes her vigil, with compassionate concern she gives small regard to the fact she too maybe should sleep also, she does not rest until she knows her patient will survive and heal and be well.

It is early when she arise and writes.

Well it is good this was just he initiate stage.I told them i would not le them interfere with my god and I did, and this is the result. never again will someones cold tyrannical lawfulness cause me to hurt another.I will reach into what flame I see, and help and who cry in pain. Never again will someone stay my hands. Not for a second. This I vow to my god. and if they force me to not heal.. I will consider them as the very flame I am trying to rescue another from .

she then rises and leaves , her intention to find someone to tend. not angry, just determined.
