How to RP as a dwarf in the UD

Unread post by Chexss »

Alright so I recently created a gray dwarf barb/fighter here and was curious to how I should RP him. I have also been playing my drow warlock so what I find a habit of is speaking words such as usstan/jaluk/jalil/vendui ect..

Three questions for this..

One - Would my dwarf still be using these common words even if he does not speak the drow language?

Two - How should I rp my dwarf...is he to be considered a roathe? (slave). He has an int of 13 so he isn't as dumb as a rock but he is smart enough to keep his trap shut when surrounded by a group of jaluks/jalil's.

Third - How is time..accounted for? For example...I went on a hunting party 2 days ago irl time...we meet up later and IC how would I address that? It has been days? cycles? I find for a while I have got around fine on my druid on the surface refering to moons for example...it has been many moons since so and so.

Any thoughts!?! :geek:

I used to have a tanarukk slave who had 16 int. I always used to play him basically as subservient until anyone close to equal rank came along to which he would act like an alpha dog trying to exert his dominance, even peeing on people...

In terms of vendui, jalil, jaluk etc Even the lowliest of rothe would get a grasp of what the words roughly meant when surrounded constantly by them, though I never used to initiate conversation with drowspeak, only recognise their meaning.

Understanding of a superior/inferior relationship has nothing to do with intelligence as a general rule, I would say. Although smart people are possibly better at recognizing one and knowing how to act in it, they might just as well be too proud to accept being treated as inferior if they think themselves smarter.
Generally, Drow dominance of the Underdark is a pretty accepted phenomenon among the humanoid races at least, as far as I understand, so any Duergar, Svirfneblin or whatever would probably be rather culturally acclimated to seeing the Drow as their betters, or at least to pretending to.

1) Only if your dwarf thinks it is applicable, but considering the temper of such race, I find it rare.

2) Hard to say. There is list of races that are exempted from slavery because they have good aptitude to wizardry. Let's also consider that duergars are famous for having alliances with drow (even if short-lived).

However, there 'are' duergar slaves in Darkspires, but they were already slaves when they were sold to Sshamath, and laws free incoming slaves only if they have ability to cast spells as wizard.

If the character in question is local that lived in city for long time, it is better not to try 'slave' option.

3) Now that is something we may never agree on. Most of us try to use RT as the main one, since with IGT you are capable of speaking to someone with 5-6 sentences and have several IG hours pass. Not acceptable, if you ask me.

I use ingame-time for the time of day, but IRL-date for which date it happened on. Meaning that if an adventure took place over several IRL hours (which means several IC-daycycles) and you meet again two IRL-days later, the whole adventure gets compressed into having happened two days ago. It gets a bit weird, but hey, what to do.

This should even work better in the Uneerdark where there is no night and day, I suppose.

The 'cycles' scenario tends to refer back to Salvatore's work and the pillar of Narbondel, which acted like a clock for Menzoberranan, this has lead to many referring to days as cycles IG even though nothing of the same exists in Sshamath or its surrounds. Reverie plays a part in the RP aspect too though, drow like other elves, but unlike yourself, do not by default have days broken by sleep, and reverie is often unscheduled and taken as required

Actually, there are at least two alternatives to reverie due to many disadvantage of reverie for drow.
