Background:

Nivarum Beziliskt slowly picks his way among the alleys of Sshamath, keeping mostly to the darker regions as if that were possible. He absently rubs the stubble of his face and pulls his dusty hood up over his shaven head to mask the prickles of white poking through his scalp, vowing to shave his hair again at the next opportunity. He thinks back to the shadow of his former life and remembers that there is succor in obscurity, telling himself that the means to survival rest in keeping a low profile and raising no prying inquiries. He stops for a moment and braces himself against a damp wall of the cavern with one unsteady hand as the memories flood back to him; visions of faces in the dark, blood on the floor of the compound, bodies everywhere - some even retain their heads.

The scenes replays themselves again in defiance of his will to purge them from his memory lest some observer read too much in his visage. In his violent mind's eye, he steps across the threshold of the minor upstart's domicile and trods the entrails of the late House Illisten, cadavers arranged in the throes of a midnight raid.. a common enough occurrence in these cities of the deep and one he is not unfamiliar with. He spares a bit of remorse for these poor wretches, feeling they merit that much at least for having provided some measure of hospitality, nay even kindness, which in retrospect likely led to their downfall.

Amid the pools of blood and sinew he observes the tattered, headless corpse of the Illharess who claimed him during a surface raid where he alone had succeeded in procuring the clothing of a wood elf for use as a disguise. Even victory has its consequences it seems. Prior to that he had served the prominent House in Nebrezzen, the Fey'Dur in their struggle for eminence against the Do'Anna. This is what happens to those who come between rivals... He remembers the cruelty of the major Houses. He remembers the strictness with which their males were treated. His knees still ache from the cold stone floor, his neck bent, his head low, his body straight... the pains of supplication.

Back in the present, he rubs the scar that encircles his ring finger on his right hand. An even older memory to accompany a relatively recent wound. It was foolish to have stolen the ring from the Matron; though, who could have suspected that it would become his curse. This injury runs even deeper, a seldom traveled cavern of his psyche. Memories from an even earlier city, even farther away. A similar raid.. a similar scene. Blood. Bodies. Family.

Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:

On his journey through the underdark, Nivarum suffered near-death starvation. Such that he was forced to eat his imp familiar, Shadrak. His new familiar is a spider which seems to have been sent to torment him as it tends to bite him painfully whenever a priestess of Lolth is nearby.
