Paladin Multiclassing

Quick question regarding paladins, in PNP if you take another class after paladin you are no longer able to take anymore levels of paladin. Is that rule applicable here or it doesnt matter as long as you have at least 3 lvls of each class by lvl 20?

If you have three levels of each class before 20, you're fine.
