The trial of Vera Malkov

This is the transcript of the Trial Of Vera Malkova which occurred on Eleasis 28, 1352. The presiding Justice was Katarina, Paladin of Tyr, in association with High Priest of Tyr, Eldric Sulnar.

Vera Malkova stood trial on accusations of practicing necromantic magic, and the prosecutor was Jack Roman, who was also the victim of the accused. Witnesses of the crime consisted of King Pain, ruler of Tsarmarth , and Gabriella. Witnesses to the trial Consisted of Druga Gorlass and Adalove Silvergleam.

The following is a record of the trial as transcribed by the the temple scribe.


Katarina takes the Podium.

Katarina: Tyr, The even handed the just god guide me this day allow me to make the proper, the right, and the just ruling of the case presented before me this day. In your name i Pray.

Katarina: Who do we have present today for this trial as prosecution and as defense.

Vera Malkova: I will defend myself

Jack roman Well, I'm the complaining witness.

Pain: Raises hand* Witness

Katarina and for the record, miss, please state your full name.

Vera Malkova: I am Vera Malkova

Katarina: And you sir

Jack Roman: Jack roman.

Katarina: Jack Roman you will be representing yourself?

Jack Roman: I suppose I don't have a choice in the matter do i? I don't know much about how these sort of things proceed.

Katarina: Well to start make an opening statement about what occurred.

Jack Roman: Well, Ive seen this girl at the Friendly Arm in Fire before.
Never Learned her Name Until Just now though.
The event in question though- she came up to me and asked if she could try a new combat maneuver on me.
Knowing she was a wizard i asked if it was a spell and she assured me it was not.
So i agreed to let her swing her mace at me a few times and she offered me gold.
It seemed reasonable enough as she did not seem malicious in her intent.
After she swung a few times she said that was enough and she suddenly became very furious and cast what im told was a negative energy ray spell at me.
Thats when i pulled out my blade- I was unarmed this whole time- and i used the flat of it to knock her out.
I bound her with some rope and a female mage who was there, ran to get someone with authority to detain her.
Thats about the whole of it

Katarina: Thank you, please be seated.
Miss malkova your opening statement about the incident please.

Vera Malkova: Alright
It was almost like he said.
There was a deal, that i try my new "toy" on him, yes.
But that he cant move at all in that moment.
and the fact is i was not harming him with that spell!

Katarina: A question if I may.

Ver Malkova of course madam
your honor.

Katarina: the negative energy ray as it was called. what kind of components are required to use it? Vocal?Somatic? Material?

Vera malkova: Verbal Somatic.

Katarina nods: So you have to say certain mystical words and move your hands in certain gestures to cast it yes?

Vera Malkova: Yes your honor.

Katarina: Thank you, you may continue.

Vera Malkova: So, I didn't make him even a scratch.
And that was very weird.
Because only dead ones can not be harmed by such a spell...

Vera malkova: I know it will sound bizarre, bit was looking like i was healing him!
but thats not the end.

Vera malkova: Suddenly that mage girl start to yell how i am a necromancer, and a lot people came!

Vera Malkova: I was saying that i am not, that i was using only that one spell because i was provoked and angry.
And they almost lynched me!

They start to hitting me, i was afraid for my life.

Katarina: you say they... who is they?

Vera malkova: Even today before you came your honor, they were hitting me and insulting me.
And some of them was calling for a lynch!
and there were one guy, Ezekiel, who is not able to be here now, because of his wounds.
He was trying to protect me, and these guys behind me almost killed him! without any reason.

Katarina. These are just opening statements.\ miss, if you have nothing else to add as far as the occurrences on the day in question i will ask you take a seat.

Vera malkova: only for that guy was trying to protect me.

katarina: His trial will be at a later (date) miss, right now we are dealing with you.
Ill ask you to take a seat please.

Vera malkova: My body is all covered with bruises!

Katarina: Are there any present right now who are gifted in the arcane arts?

Pain: Raises hand*

Katarina: Very well sir. Please step forward and state your name.

Pain: King Pain, ruler of Tsamarth, cleric of Chauntea *bows*

Katarina: I will remind you Mister Pain that you stand within the temple of Tyr and you are bound to speak the truth.

Pain: Absolutely your honor.

Katarina: then tell me about this negative energy ray, what does it do? what can it do?

Pain: a negative energy ray is a lot like a warlocks Eldritch blast. Except instead of Eldritch energy, it deal is, as the name would suggest, negative energy.

Katarina: and by Negative energy, what do you mean?

Pain: It is extremely dangerous, and can strip the very flesh from a foe.
and is designed to do so.
Negative, as in from the Plane of Shadow.

Vera Malkova: These is ridiculously

Katarina: And what school of magic is there ray from?
to vera: Miss you will have an opportunity to speak again.

Mister pain, have a seat please. Are there any others here who practice arcane magic or are wizards or sorcerers.

Pain: for that, you would have to refer to miss Gabriela.

Gabiela: ouch, my time.
Well then, i am a mage.

Katarina: Come forward and state your name please.

Gabriela: Well, i am Gabriela

Katarina: Thank you Gabriella, as a wizard you carry a spell book yes?

Gabriella: of course

Katarina: Within your spell book do you have scribed the spell of Negative energy Ray.

Gabiela.: some necromantic spell i have inscribed to know what they are.

Gabriella: but this spell i don't have
I avoid necromancy so much as i can.

Katarina: Before this incident have you ever seen the spell used before?

Gabriella: If it is about this spell exactly. I don't remember. I've encountered few wizards

Katarina: Hmmm Very well then, Thank you. you may have a seat.

Katarina: Miss Vera, rise please.

Katarina: Are you a natural spell caster or a wizard?

Vera malkova:I am a wizard

Katarina: And this book beside me *holds up a spell book* This is your book yes?

Vera Malkova: I guess it is

Katarina: Please step forward and take a close look to verify if it is yours.

Vera Malkova: It is, your honor.

Katarina: Excellent Can you show me within this book the spell of Negative energy ray please?

Vera Malkova: of course your honor

Gabriella: Of course

Gabriella: Of course
* Gabriella:Takes out a blankscroll and writes on the papers.
Gabriella: .. so .. this is it *hands the scroll over*

Katarina: Thank you miss Gabriela, you may take your seat.

Katarina: Miss Vera you admit to casting this negative energy ray as stated in your opening statement yes?

Vera malkova: da
Yes your honor...

Katarina: and you said it would appear to heal jack is that correct?

Vera malkova: Yes i said that, your honor.

Katarina: Allow me to read for you the information scribed from your spellbook.

Vera malkova: Of course.

Katarina: according to this a negative energy ray is from the school of necromancy. Is is of the first circle of spell. It requires a vocal and somatic component to cast.

Vera Malkova: Indeed your honor.

Katarina: it projects a ray of negative energy that comes from your pointing finger and... this is the important part here.

Vera Malkova: Da?

Katarina: The ray deals damage to "living" Creature if it strikes true... in addition if used on the undead it will heal them again, if it strikes true.

Vera Malkova: that is a fact your honor.

Katarina: Additionally if the Target is of strong will, the target is able to suffer no harm from the spell.

Vera Malkova: Correct

Katarina: so essentially what you are telling me is that jack is in fact, undead. Is that correct?

Vera malkova: I don't know, i just that i was not dealing any damage to him..

Katarina: But you said that it would appear to be healing him, it would only do so if he were undead.

Katarina: jack step forward please.

Vera Malkova: Da, that is a truth. After that spell he was looking even more stronger.

Katarina and jack meet in front of the Podium.

Katarina: Jack if you are in fact undead then i wish to perform to simple things to test this.

Jack roman: *laughs* sure but i could clear this up pretty quickly.

Katarina: Please *holds up hand to silence jack* This will not hurt you if you are in fact alive.

Jack roman: All right.

*katarina takes out a holy symbol of tyr*

By the power granted to me by Tyr i command thee abomination of the unliving be gone.

*katarina casts turn undead*

*jack is unaffected*

katarina: Hmmm interesting, perhaps you are of a stronger variety of undead as seen in the fields.

*Katarina unsheathes her bastard sword.

*Katarina Blesses the weapon

Jack Roman: You're not going to stab me are you?

*katarina takes the flat of the blade and presses it against his skin*
*jack is uneffected*

Katarina: congratulations, Jack is not undead *sheathes her blade* thank you for entertaining this jack.
Have a seat.

*jack roman move to his seat


Katarina: miss Malkova i can assure you, Jack is not undead, and the only logical conclusion to his not being harmed by your spell is that he is a very Strong willed individual.

Vera Malkova: i guess so...

Katarina: one last question, as a wizard... and this can be answered by Gabriela as well.. As a wizard you cast a spell it requires concentration, certain intentional movements and precise words yes?

Vera Malkova: yes but amount of concentration depends on situation.


Pain: That is a lie, your honor

Katarina: Gabriela? Could you answer the question as well please.

Gabriella: Well wizard is often trained to concentrate well

Pain: I thank you for your input but please remain silent unless called upon.

Gabriella: Wizard without concentration... is not able to randomly fire spells

Pain: Sorry.

Gabriella: Concentration is about not being interrupted while casting.
Most of the times.

Katarina: Thank you Gabriela.

High Priest of Tyr Eldric Sulnar: *clears his throat* Very well.. that is enough.
I think in this house of try, we can conclude that this sorceress was indeed dabbling in the necromantic arts...
Though is not guilty of animating the dead, nor any other such serious crimes... she is on a path which can lead to such... unnatural acts.
We will give the accused...this opportunity to renounce her actions, and refrain from such acts in the future.
She may donate a fine to the church of try "points to alter" and shall be ministered to by priests of the order.
That she may refrained from this dark path.

Vera Malkvoa: Thank you your honor.

High Priest Sulinar : Indeed. I have no doubt my child.

Vera Malkova: I am not a necromancer i just made a fatal mistake!
It wont happen again.

High Priest Sulinar : you are very lucky here today miss Vera let us hope that you stay on a true and narrow path so that we do not see you here again.

Vera Malkova: I know madam

Katarina: High Priest Sulinar there is one other matter in relation to this trial.
