Background: For entire generations the warriors of the Ironheart family lived and breathed only for fighting and war, devoted to Tempus they also used their fighting abilities to seek fortune as adventurers or mercenaries. A small group, members of this family started to live and serve Noble Households at Waterdeep retiring their mantles of war, choosing instead to find honor in duels and protection while some of them joined the guards without losing their faith in Tempus.

Kayden’s father was a traditional Ironheart raised in a harsh environment in Luskan, while his mother was a beautiful weapon master from Chessenta, both bred for the heat of fighting they fought together for many years developing a strong bond and relationship. To them, Kayden was a problematic child, even if he was capable of fighting as fiercely as any other, he didn’t really share their joy in fighting. He believed that the true worth of a soldier lay in the ability to protect and serve people, not only slaying his enemies. At the age of ten Kayden’s family was serving the Raindrop’s noble family, it was there that the boy started to develop more passion for his training. Specially after he met Brinael, first daughter of his Lord. Two years later an assassination attempt on Lord Alek lead to death both of Kayden’s parents. They shielded him from a barrage of arrows and kept fighting to their last breath, in the end leaving Kayden as the last one of his family. The young boy decided then to be their living legacy, serving the Raindrop’s family and taking his training more seriously in the name of Tempus.

“Many years passed since then, I devoted myself to be a Warden, I followed my father’s teachings and yet I can’t get a grasp about living at all. We Ironhearts, sacrifice ourselves for people, but now that I’m the last one and it’s also my duty to protect our traditions.

My weakness was the cause that brought Brinael to leave her family, she had to embrace a sort of pact in order to protect her mother and her sister from some thieves. I was only fifteen when they ambushed us near the household, and I thought I was going to die. I can still remember how weak I was on that time. Two of the enemies pushed myself against the window of the shop, shattering it to pieces. I regained consciousness after a few seconds and I engaged them to a brutal fight while the third one went for Brinael and the others. I don’t remember much, but right after the fight was over, I saw the third one outside burning to the ground while Brinael was crying in front of him, her mother and sister right beside her calling for help… The survivor of the aggressors then escaped threatening her family, I was too tired and wounded to follow him, but I think that one day he will consider revenge for his companions. Now that I think about it… It was the first time I killed someone with my bare hands.

Since then our lives changed drastically. I kept training, trying to overcome my weaknesses and I kept serving them for many years, yet lord Alek was sad for the situation that Brinael’s magic created. They researched about her magic but they couldn’t find any clues about the origin of her flames. They locked her in a tower and they ordered me to be her guardian, my lord assigned me personally to protect her, no matter what I vowed to follow her. I think that on that time he imagined that Brin was on the edge and that she needed to get out from the household. We escaped after five days since then, I admit it was difficult to leave all behind but my vow to her was the proof of my loyalty to Lord Alek. I exactly predicted Brinael’s actions following her during her escape. I left a letter to the family hoping that they will not look for us, we need to understand first what happened to her. Two years passed since then, we traveled and met so many people around and now for the first time in my life I found a new family. I am still an Ironheart and Brinael’s guardian, but a morninglord and a priest helped me to find my faith and devotion in Lathander.

Father told me that wardens must have a heart of iron, we can’t have any precious things to ourselves, because bonds are a weakness in critical moments. They need a strong emotional strength so they can let everything wash over them.

Now the situation is different, Brinael is not the only one I’m protecting. I’m working and training hard to join Lathander’s temple as a Soldier of the Dawn. Maybe one day we will find out more about her pact as a warlock, I need to be sure about what will happen to her soul… I’ll keep waiting for the Morninglord’s report about it, hoping for a possible solution to free her from this pact.”

Goals: To become a Knight of the Dawn, to protect and serve Brinael, to preserve his family traditions.

Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:

-Kayden is not the last Ironheart (he usually said it because only his family served nobles, the others kept with being mercenaries or something else), he still has some relatives around the Faerun with the same last name, he would like to meet them. He also has a female cousin who used to bully him when they were children, he’s actually afraid of her.

-Kayden is a man who follows laws, but he can understand the flaws of the system and might take advantage of it to help innocent people.

-Keeping his helmet is a way for him to keep distance from people. He doesn’t really like showing his face, but thanks to a Morninglord he started to think more about himself in front of the others.
