Favoured Soul RP help.

Unread post by elsteveo »

Hi guys looking for some pointers on how to role play a FS.
I have some idea of a back story and fine with the alignment and general feel of this characters personality.
I am unsure of how to play the "holy" side of a favoured soul is he like a Lay preacher as a priest is like a cleric?
Or is he more of a holy warrior who thanks his god for the many martial blessings he receives?

Second option, in most cases. Favored souls don't stand on ceremony like a Cleric would and worships his god more intuitively, they may pray to their god, but technically they don't have to, so they might not have a disciplined religious behavior.

For all intents and purposes they are an instrument of their god and should be devoted to their cause, just like a cleric ofc. but while most Cleric's will spread the word of their deity and follow the rituals to a point, a Favored might have a more complicated or alternative way of showing their faith.

You can read about the original PnP Lore in Complete Divine 3.5, it's more accurate then the in-game text - http://dndtools.eu/classes/favored-soul/

Ok thats good it is more in line with the characters personality anyway.
I have Multiclassed with Man at Arms so I looking at him as a Warrior who has been called to service by his god rather than a holy man type!

Thanks for you response and the Link makes for interesting reading.

They don't have to be devoted. Some FS don't even WANT to be favoured by one god or another. Hells, the FS may even hate the god who favours them.

But that particular god has a purpose with that mortal and even if the FS might fight against it, he'll eventually end up doing exactly what his/her god want him/her to in the end.

Such an internal conflict has potential for great RP, if done right.

I've always enjoyed the idea of rolling a Favoured Soul who doesn't know WHO his patron deity is, and then instead of preaching the gods dogma then your character just instinctively follows it. If the dogma is about destruction, then your character might accidentally break stuff all the time. If the dogma is about healing the sick/wounded, your character might be compelled to channel healing spells every time he see's someone get hurt.

Be aware, if you start casting spells on strangers without explanation/warning, it's grounds for PvP. Your character is allowed to get upset about being attacked IC of course, but OOC you should take it in good grace if your character gets beaten around every now and then.

But this way, there's a lot of possibilities for interpretations and (more importantly) misinterpretations by others, when they try to help your character find out who his deity is.

That's my idea anyway, act the dogma, don't preach it :)
