armor check penalty

Hi all!

I am not good at D&D specific, so here is the question:
I am making melee character wearing full plate and tower shield. Both of them have high armor check penalty. What does it mean?

Means there are some skills you will get penalty for. Particularly hide, move silently, tumble and so on.

So, for example, if I use Hide skill wearing default tower shield, I will get -10(equals to armor check penalty in Tower Shield description) to Hide and Move silently checks?

Yep you got it! Most of the checks are related to Dex skills.

Unless your a sneak, the only skill it really impacts is Tumble, which is fairly important if you don't have mobility/spring attack at least.
