This is going to be a little Biased coming from a lolthite player. But I really feel like some people need to have some guidelines on how to successfully play a underdark character.
Rule number 1.) This is NOT the surface. Do NOT play your character like a surface character. This isn't a civalized society. You start off in the underdark with NO friends. You WILL be held accountable for things you say and do inside of the city. While you may not feel any repercussions immediately, people remember what you say. The next time you're out grinding and that joe smoe you mocked in town comes around the corner. . . Yea, that joe smoe is a epic power build. Expect pvp, or extremely hostile rp. You can't openly express hatred or mock someone and not expect PVP or just not give PVP consent. As I said before, this is NOT the surface.
Rule number 2.) The people in the underdark generally play for the RP. Yes everyone grinds, and everyone likes to sprint around in full plate armor wielding a giant battleaxe in town. We all have those days. Try to minimize this as much as possible. Slow down and develop your character. As said before, you have NO friends. The whole underdark environment will be much more tolerable with people to RP with. Join a guild or faction, there are tons of them! The underdark is an awesome place if you just get to know the lore behind it!
Rule number 3.) Do your research. Don't just make some level 1 character and run around with absolutly no knowledge of any diety, guild or faction. Not only will no-one want to RP with you, but you'll just make a fool of yourself. Now generally the players in the underdark are willing to work with you, so long as you have the most basic knowledge of whats going on. We're not Nazis about lore, but we honestly can't rp with you if you don't know even the most basic things about the predominant deities. On the surface you can walk up to someone, and talk about something as simple as how beautiful the day is or how there was an attack on the friendly arm inn the other day. Basically what i'm saying is that the characters on the surface are just generally nicer and more open to conversation than underdark characters. I'm not at all saying surface players are inferior role players, there is simply more opportunity's to interact with one another in ways that do not involve some amount of knowledge of lore. Characters in the underdark can be pretty hostile. . . Don't expect the conversation to go very far without the subject of who your character worships or what the point of you even speaking to them coming up. Because quite frankly, someone like a lolthite (or a character who worships Lolth) wouldn't be standing around talking to someone who worships Vhaeraun (A enemy of Lolth)
Rule number 4.) Ask for help OOCly. I myself am more than happy to help anyone who wishes to learn about the underdark, or where something is. We're players just like you. Ask us for help and we'll find a way to assist you. But at least meet us half way and do a little research on the environment you're in.

Actually it's better to search google for a PDF version of Faiths and Panthenons, as well as Complete Divine. Or you can find the links in this post: http://www.bgtscc.net/viewtopic.php?p=579175#p579175.
Wikipedia is not always as accurate a source as it should be. Better to read the actual sourcebooks.

Re: A guide to playing in the underdark
A bit aggressive and finale in the presentation, and all pvp rules still applies to the underdark. It is also worth repeating that this is S'shamath, and religion in general takes a background role, as does qu'ellar status.
Being a lolthlite does not give one the right to hunt down people of other faiths, and being an eilistraeean does not give one the right to openly insult other faiths. Just like being a mage doesn't give players right to order other players about, then a strong build does not give players the right to bully others with weaker builds to show that they are in the right. The truth is, that the UD is not a place that can afford open hostility and alienating players. It is way too fragile.
So please, remember DM Strahd, and gently ease new players into the setting. Because behind our toons, we, more than anywhere else on the server, need to be open, friendly and helpful. We may not risk permadeath anymore, but we really should act as if we did in regards to other players enjoyment.
