Dead and very dead?

Unread post by WobbleTop »

Is it possible at all to RP that you -kocked- someone out with Finger of Death? Or at least, pretend that you quickly ressurected said person with a scroll, or is ressurection supposed to be harder IC?

Also, truly nasty spells, such as entropic husk and damnation...

They would just totally permakill someone according to their descriptions, but we all know that cannot be the case on the server.

My point is, can you at all RP that you knock someone out with such spells?
What about otherwise generally-lethal spells? Shouldn't Isaacs greater missile storm turn people into mush ICly? Or fireball? They just got a bit charred, choked on the fumes and fainted?

"...AND YOU SHALL BE DAMNED!..."
The warlock chants with incredible power, pointing a finger of doom in your direction!
*He coughs to clear his throat* "...Ahem, but only slightly."

The current rules say that the victor decides whether the loser is knocked out or slain. This applies to "Death" spells and things that would ordinarily never even leave a trace of the target remaining (Disintegrate, Damnation, etc).

It's been argued back and forth over the years about whether certain spells should -only- have Death as a consequence, but for simplification and ease of use, the victor determines the result of PvP.

I'd like to ask about NPC spawns. If you are playing a character who does not kill, can you RP that a mechanical "kill" is merely a knockout?

Maybe spells like Disintegrate, Finger of Death, and Entropic Husk cannot be RP'd as knockouts against NPC spawns, since their spell descriptions dictate that the target dies. But what about spells without such a description?

Also, what about normal attacks? Can you RP that a mechanical "kill" against an NPC spawn with a sword is a nonlethal knockout with the flat of the blade or something? Or that an arrow hit a non-vital part of the body?

I am assuming that a mechanical "kill" with an unarmed punch can always be RP'd as a nonlethal knockout, but please correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you.

The rule is PvP-specified only at the moment, but it is in the spirit of promoting roleplay, not hindering it.

Off the top of my head I can't see anything wrong with the usage you've described, but if certain spells are used simply for their mechanical advantage then it would be poor form to downplay their effects too much as well.

Melee has much greater freedom with this, as I see it. A touch of the sword doesn't necessarily carry the intent of death, disintegration or fragmentation-into-itty-bits that some spells do.

Just try to be conscious of certain spells and it should be fine.

This is thread necromancy, but I have a question about Quivering Palm.

Quivering Palm's feat description clearly states that it kills the target. Would it be poor form to RP it as a knock out? Quivering Palm doesn't reduce a body to dust or anything, like Disintegrate does.

Would it be godmodding to RP that my character has learned a modified Quivering Palm that only knocks someone out?
