Is it allowed to RP sailing a sailship without DM present?

Unread post by Hoihe »

Ahoy!

Since I am working to revive the Wanderess, and sailing is a pretty big point of RP, and asking a DM to accompany whatever tiny excursions Hoihe plans to train the crew or visit some random spot would waste their time, I ask if it is allowed to RP setting sail and returning without DM support.

The reason I ask is that the ship has a number of NPC crew to accompany us, mainly serving as the ship's sailors (they stay on board and do ship work) while players are sailor-marines (they help out on the ship and also disembark for expeditions).

The simple answer would be yes. (we even put in a map so that players could have a crack at doing this themselves!)

The complicated answer would be yes, but if you RP anything a bit "out there" without DM approval we might retcon it.

Eg, "Our ship regularly sails to Waterdeep, its an active trading ship. Lets RP one of those sailing trips on our guildhall boat" is fine.

(of course nothing stops you from asking for DM support for this anyway, to spice things up!)

But

"Our ship has sailed across to Matzica early, found a magic whirlpool that took it to the plane of fire and then Zakhara, before finding a cave that led to the Underdark, where we sailed across an underground sea fighting drow pirates and kuo-toa, before finding a mage who enchanted the ship to levitate up a giant chasm which opened up on a mountain above the lake of steam, which we slid down using the boat as a giant sled before landing in the lake and sailing round past Calimport to buy some spices and back to Baldur's Gate." would not be fine.

I do ask though, are we allowed to "let's assume" RP the cities' docks and so? Maybe on the forum?

But would be amazingly EPIC

I say we go for it.

Yes, but with the same caveats as above.
