How to Spot a Warlock

Unread post by NeonAvenger »

I'm wondering how difficult it is to tell that someone is a warlock?

I'm guessing that a warlock's invocations are substantially different from a wizard's or sorceror's spells and that someone with a good knowledge of magic (decent spellcraft skill) would be able to tell that those glowing hands and blasts of fire are something... else.

So: Is that correct? And if so exactly how difficult would it be?

There isn't a set rule. It's a judgement and play-nice sort of concept.

The game doesn't roll spellcraft for Invocations like it does actual spells. It treats most warlock abilities like Feats, which is how the game implements them anyways.

Typically (and this isn't a rule, just a suggestion) someone with Hideous Blow glowy-hands should get something like a Spot check to notice the glowy hands and then a modest spellcraft roll to recognize what it is. I'd say 25-30 roll is decent. Sets you above the completely magic ignorant but not a huge DC roll.

Again though, those are things that you should really work out with whoever you're RPing with. A quick message either through tells or ooc chat can clear up a lot of "godmod" behavior here. Smooths out and makes everyone happy with an understanding. Most players are pretty lenient about that kind of thing.

If you notice the spell effects but fail a Spellcraft, you don't necessarily have to just ignore what just happened either. You might not realize it was a devil-pact ability that just struck down the goblin nearby, but you can still react like someone had just waved a hand and blasted a goblin to bits.

+1. This advice should be applied often and liberally, and not just in the case of Warlock invocations.
