Where to go... (Around the world)

Unread post by Solaris »

Hi guys!

As I am a frequent traveller for work, I find myself at different locations around the world. Sometimes I only have a few hours on location, sometimes a day. But the most boring thing is to get stuck at your hotel room since you don't know where to go. Unfortunately Tripadvisor isn't what it used to be and it sells a lot of crap as well these days. Yelp is good, but hey, I have a forum here with people all over this place called earth so.... maybe you guys know where to go? I'll focus on Europe for now as its quite a list already.

I'm looking for restaurants, a nice bar here and there or something to do on a daytrip. I'll make a list where I am the most, or will be in the near future. Mainly the bigger cities of a country.

Hope you guys can help me out and prevent me from ordering the hotel's TV pizza or burger roomservice deals XD

If you come to munich give me a shout! You can have a matress in my flat if you want to save the hotel. I live quite close to the city center. As for restaurants i would suggest burgers. But it depends on how much you want to spend i guess. Also could imagine you would enjoy a bierkeller if you are into the more rustic things.

In Bergen (norway), there is a small cafe on 'Torgallmenningen' which is what everyone calls the central square, near the fish market. At the far end, behind the building with the neon sign with the clock in it. They serve the best burger that I've ever eaten.

This is as good a way description as I can manage, and it is not very good. I can say that if you see a shoe maker shop, you are just around the corner from the cafe.

I actually think I can find it. I've been a lot around the fish market taking those schrimpsandwitches :P So if I walk back from the fishmarket, my back to the water, the neon sign building would be at my right hand?

ty for the info so far guys!

In Bilbao you have plenty of places to go.

If you want just a walk I recommend the area surrounding the river and the old part of the city (called "Casco Viejo"). You can find plenty of places in the old part to eat, but maybe not at Friday/Saturday night unless you are looking for party party party  There are some very beautiful views from the mountains sorrounding Bilbao; I recommend you taking the "funicular" (sorry, don't know if there is a specific word for this in english) to Artxanda and have a walk there.

There are some nice places to take a drink and eat in the center, more specifically in Licenciado Poza street and some perpendicular streets (like Doctor Areilza or Urquijo). But don't go at Thursday afternoon if you don't want to meet a crowd of thirsty university students. There are more bars/restaurants around the Gran Vía street and the Moyua square, where do you also have the shops hot spot. Here I will make a special mention to a bar I simply love: if you like rock music go to a small bar/pub called "Azzurro" (easily findable in googlemaps), it's a very nice place with great music and something more... I assure it will surprise you (I won't make any spoiler  ).

Last but not the less, if you want a more "cultural" approach, there are also a some museums (Guggenheim included) and theatres, which you can easily locate asking at the hotel (Bilbao is not big, so there are not so much). There is also a cinema commonly known as "Multis" where sometimes original versions can be seen.

If you come here and need further info just PM me ;)

Have a good time next time you come to Bilbao!

London

I live 20 minutes on a train from London! There are many many places to visit in it, both for a day, and for an evening. There are three airports though, it would depend on where you are staying probably? Most of the London airports are quite a ways out of London.

Hampton Court is quite accessible from Heathrow.

When the weather's nice and the seasons are right, Kew Gardens are a nice visit. If you are in Central London, a boat up the river to Kew then Hampton Court can be quite fun, if time consuming. Fun to go from city to country like that. There's a regular service.

The Camden markets are fun.

Museum wise, many people love the Natural History Museum; the Museum of Science and Technology is also good, and the archaeological artefacts in the British Museum are some of the best in the world (because we stole them from the rest of the world, srry Greece). I've heard good things about the Victoria and Albert Museum, but I've never been. So if you like museums, depending on your taste there ins one. And they are free of charge! (I also offer tours of the British Museum to friends and family members. Guaranteed to help put people to sleep)

The National Gallery has a good collection. Bear in mind I tend to judge art collections by "how many Caravaggio's does it have?"...but it is a good collection.

Bars are a bit subjective and there are many...again depends on where you would be based.

Same goes for restaurants, it would depend on if you are looking for cheap and cheerful or fine dining!

I can get some recommendations for both for you for both Central London and Camden area

Generally though, there is anything you want in London, but everything is very expensive.

Manchester

I guess you are looking for stuff to do near Manchester Airport? Its quite a way from Manchester itself.

Would you have access to a car?

Didsbury is a nice area for bars, restauraunts and a pleasant walk in the park - its on the train line from Manchester Airport. If you wander Didsbury you have a roughly 30% chance of meeting one of my old university mates.

Central Manchester has good shopping. I will need to ask about for recommendations as mine would be out of date.

The nearby Northern Quarter has good daylife and nightlife; but you have to be sufficiently hip. Last time I went there I felt like a 60 year old maths teacher, I was that uncool. So be careful.

Birmingham

I can ask a friend for you about this!

I only occasionally go to Estonia, if it is in fact Tallinn you are heading to. I always like the Old Tallinn (Vana Tallinn). Cobblestone streets and big fat towers. There is a place there you can climb and see most of Vana Tallinn. There are several hand craft stores. There are also stores that sell crystal glasses etc and also crystal figures. These make really nice gifts (or just for yourself to admire over). If you want anything with amber stones, get it in Poland. It is much more expensive in Estonia and those stores are mostly for tourists.

Oops... Of course Estonia XD lol! Sorry!!!

I love that city... I found one of the best restaurants I know so far there: Leib Resto ja Aed. :)
My wintergloves come from Tallinn as well. Wool with a scandinavian like pattern. Handmade and from a cart next to the old city wall. It's really as if you are back in medieval times there.
I'll check out those glass figures next time, ty for the tips!

Freekender, I'll definitely will go for a mountain tour next time then! The area is just breathtaking... so green! I've been in the Guggenheim... gods that creapy spider outside...XD

Kleomenes, the hotel in London is pretty central. I should be in the center in about 10 min max. The Camden markets sound like fun! Never been there before... And those museums I have to check out as well. Ty for the info!

In Manchester we are in the city as well. Pretty close to Chinatown. The crewbus brings us from the airport to the hotel so I have to depend on public transport mostly...but if I have almost a full day or a full day, there is always the rental car option :)

Ha! I already got quite some new and nice ideas from you guys ty! :)

Unfortunatly I don't remember any name of the restaurants we went to in Prague but honestly they are all pretty good. Best ones are the ones in the basements though as for a daytrip I absolutly loved Pruhonice castle and gardens! Kutna Hora is really nice too with its Sedlec Ossuary, I think it was about an hour from Prague. And if you like opera I highly recommend going to the National Theatre.

If you are in Sibiu you have to go to the Crama Sibiul Vechi, great ambiance and worth the wait and you have to eat papanasi, best dessert ever! And if you aren't afraid of heights go to the Lutheran Evangelical Cathedral & Tower.

Prague is amazing! I went to a bakery that was fully Ferrarri themed and all. You know, eating your chocolate cake with coffee between Ferrarri celebrity stuff. Was fun as well! Kutna Hora I haven't been to...I'll check it out when I have the time :)

Crama Sibiul Vechi I've never heard of as well. Perfect! I'll check that one out too :P

Does anyone have a good idea for Warsaw? I'm there for almost 24 hours... I have no idea what to do there. And Copenhagen is on the list as well if anyone knows something there :)
