Non-cursed boots that arbitrarily change displayed AC

Unread post by Eldebryn »

This is kind of weird. I picked the following Boots item, which is not cursed. It's description only has positive effects and I can remove it from my inventory:

But here the weird thing: Every time I un-equip those boots, my AC decreased by 1 and I even managed to get it down to 0, after which it started increasing. For instance I got a "virtual" AC of 60 while naked, unbuffed. I tried getting some monsters to hit me and it seems this doesn't apply to combat though.

Anyway, I am keeping them for now in case someone wants to take a look and maybe prevent that from happening again.

You're playing a paladin, that's what's wrong.

I've seen this before with dodge vs a type. When unequipped some script is treating it as full dodge but of course it doesn't get added back on when reequipped. Not sure if it's been consistent and only noticable thanks to the unequip and reequip script or a new problem.

I can safely say that there's no server-side script related to display of AC in character sheet or inventory. That crap is hardcoded and there's no reverse engineering to understand exactly why it displays those numbers

UPDATE: They seem to affect the *actual* ac, not just the displayed one, at least at the part where they decrease it.

I toggled them enough to get my AC from 26 (only getting hit on 20s) to 5 and I did get hit by more attacks as the combat log demonstrates. Oddly, an attack total of 10 did *not* hit, but attack that were a bit higher (still way less than 26 though) did hit me.

Either way, if the staff can do nothing about it, I suppose I should destroy this bug incarnate :P

Sadly that's a common bug that happens, if boots have armor bonus vs something.
Each time you equip/unequip them your armor gets decreased.

Just sell them of .....
or if you find some really good boots with additional armor bonus vs something on them - ask a DM to remove that bonus.

I'll have you know sir, that no self-respecting paladin would ever return such dangerous items into circulation.. :P
