So I tried to make an account on the forums...

Unread post by Beas1987 »

...and apparently I already have one, replete with private messages from 2010 no less.

So I went and bought NWN2 again from GOG.com and apparently there are still active servers and everything. This could be fun :)

Just dropping a message to say hi, maybe I'll get back into the old RP scene and see what's what.

But I love human warlocks in all their flawed underpowered spellcasting levels of glory, do they have beards? I guess they can have beards... maybe this time I shall have a beard.

Used to love thayan wizards but i fear much of my lore knowledge has waned, so perhaps on a later toon.

Downloaded all the haks now waiting for the autopatch gubbins to download what's left.

What's some good community business to get stuck into around here, give me the brief version, it's been 6 years!

Duergar can come from Thay. . . yes, I see it now. A wealthy Duergar that has Thayan Red Wizards as her slaves. She lost them all to an outbreak of some sort of skin disease caused by sharing makeshift tattoo guns. She travels to Shamath to restock her slave collection with the insurance money.

Warlock are some of the top tier pve builds on the server...blasters, HiPS dagger locks and controllers can all do just fine. You won't be disappointed. Get in touch worth TeoDeathDealer for Warlock advice if needed. Have fun!

Do people still use skill rolls and such in their RP. Im Not going to be gimping myself by taking speech skills etc?

I suppose what I'm asking is should I focus my character on skills/abilities and then RP whatever or is there merit to taking various utility skills?

Skills are only enforceable by DM's (aka in events), outside of that there must be agreement between players in regards to if/when/how to use skill rolls, ability checks or saves. Some of the repeatable quests can give extra gold/xp via successful use of conversation skills, but most of the time it's not worth it since some of the quests might give more reward, but less XP then just doing it for free.

From an RP standpoint I have some conversation skills on most of my PC's though only maxed Bluff on one so I would say you should keep that in consideration. I don't see it as gimping your Warlock by investing a few points, especially in bluff since you may need to talk your way out of a situation if the wrong person catches you using your powers and IC knows what they are.

End of the day only you can decide if it's 'worth it' to invest in a given skill at the expense of others, but I always try to consider that a balance should be struck between mechanics and the RP concept of the character you are building. Don't give yourself a 6 charisma and no diplomacy and then speak to everyone in a charming and eloquent manner, it's just wrong... :P

Rules are to play your character sheet. This means, a character with zero points in Diplomacy is going to be bad/untrained at Diplomacy. It doesn't matter if you ever 'roll' the skill or not. If you want a character who is good at Diplomacy, put points into it. You are 'rolling' it every time your character speaks with diplomatic intent.

Recently, I was roleplaying my bitterly-scourged old burned man (He is only 30 tbh) since the Ebon Blade are actively in a DM campaign to gain influence in Soubar and an intimidate check went through which I rolled horribly on (and am equally unblessed in the ranks, or I guess you could blame me and say I decided to barely put any sugar in that un-alluring Intimidate rank). I really liked the event, but I was sort of shaking my head in this instance because his naturally horrible appearance in a sensible world would have one terrified of reaching a similarly-barbed future or fate (not that I am condoning everyone to be afraid of him, he doesn't come off as imposing in that vein; and intimidating RP is just not something I am trying to open up with that particular character). It's the mere blind horror of becoming old before your time is due, and abruptly burned when you were soaring at the highest height (much like Icarus), and the things in life that were once joyful and fresh are unfathomably ugly and faded now.

Anyway, I hope you can find some relevance in this rant.

I have an idea for a bit of a political power player, using either bluff or diplomacy (or both) to get into some deep rp situations and also to insist he's just a bard or a sorcerer and not a warlock. I also want to be able to run general fun combat content in PvE. PvP would be a secondary consideration because I don't find min/maxing appealing in an RP server, where's the imagination.

I guess so long as I don't need to pursue a really powerful build mechanically speaking in order to take on PvE content then I'm happy but I'd like to have a character sheet that's fun and interesting to successfully RP without resorting to violence to win an altercation (if that makes sense)

I'm also curious about crafting and lore usage, I feel a character should have a skill or way to earn a living beyond grinding monsters and dungeons for loot, is that feasible here?
