Rico is a jovial older man, very fond of people. He radiates the aura of a Kindly Father, and tries to see the good in people. However, he is not blind to the fact that there are some people who just cannot be saved. Still, he's seen quite a bit, and is willing to use his wisdom to the benefit of everyone. He is slow to anger and quick to forgive.
Background:
Some say life begins at 40. Then again, that is in the modern era, not in the world of Forgotten Realms. Still, this axiom does apply to Rico.
Rico has spent his entire life as a farmer, working on his father's land as a boy. He met his wife, Loraine, at 16 and married her at 18, slowly taking over his parent's farm as his personal family grew. It was a hard life, but simple and rewarding. Him and Loraine had three children, two strong boys and a girl who died shortly after she was born.
Not to say his life as a farmer was quiet. He would head down to Baldur's Gate on occasion and go carousing. He'd return, more often than not, with several bruises, scrapped knuckles, and a broken nose. He was a friendly brawler, always willing to step back and offer his opponent a drink in good cheer. But Loraine would always sigh, shake her head, and get the iodine and bandages.
His sons grew up strong, both physically and morally. Markov, the eldest, really took a liking to farmwork. He has currently taken a wife of his own, and is working happily on a farm a short ways to the east. They have a daughter who's 3 now, and a second child on the way.
His other son, Jeb, went the other way. He developed a wiry, whipcord style strength. He craved a bit more adventure, so he studied the ways of the bard. And so, with his two sons taking care of themselves, Rico and Loraine sold off some of their land to be able to live comfortably in their middle age.
Until the Blight came.
Rico knew something was wrong when he heard Loraine crying. She was in the living room, rocking with something clutched tight to her chest. As he approached to investigate, Loraine turned to him. "Shhh," she said. "She's trying to sleep." When Loraine pulled back the blanket, he recoiled in horror; Loraine was trying to nurse their dead child. Blood was everywhere. Using all of his brawling experience, Rico barely made it out when he heard the undead surrounding the farm. He hid in the Sanctuary of Ilmatar while the heroes of Baldur's Gate fought off the undead, and ultimately The Blight itself. In the aftermath, Rico managed to find his wife, her reanimated corpse among the desecrated. He grabbed her and their dead daughter and buried them on what remained of his farmland.
He spent several months, wracked with guilt and remorse, in the Sanctuary of Ilmater. Slowly, the Crying God worked his way into Rico's mind, easing the burden of sadness, until finally Rico had a dream where they talked. Eventually, this lead to Rico dedicating himself to Ilmatar's service to try and prevent this sort of thing from happening to anyone else.
Goals:
Serve Ilmater's dogma by shouldering as much of other people's burdens as he can. Seek atonement/forgiveness for not doing more for his wife. Help the people of Baldur's Gate any way he can.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
One or both of his sons find him and try to convince him to retire from adventuring.
More to be added later.

CHANGE LOG: Clarification of the events of the last year. Was informed that the fight with Tiamat was several years ago, and last year it was only the Blight.
