D&D 5e fun build. Anyone has other ideas?

Unread post by Passiflora »

Hi all! Thought I'd post it here, since we're all d&d and forgotten realms fans I believe! :D

What do you guys think of the 5e after some extensive gameplay? I personally like it a lot! It doesn't have that bad taste flavor that 4e had.

Sooo, I made a build for a character I'll play for Out of the Abyss, in the 5e.

It's basically a 'grappler'. We're gonna be like, 7 players, and no one knows what the others will be as it goes for classes. So I wanted to pick something no one would pick!

Tell me what you think about it! (I won't put his backstory here, but I totally made one. :D )

Here's the path:

Lvl 1 Barbarian(1), 16 str 14 dex 16 con 10 int 10 wis 8 cha (Human, variant trait with the feat)

Rage (gives advantage on strenght checks)
Feat: Tavern Brawler for the bonus action grapple when I hit an opponent.
Important skill: Athletism
Background: Criminal (Highway robber)

Lvl 2 Rogue (1)

Sneak attack
Expertise (Athletism for a nice +7)

Lvl 3 Rogue (2)

Cunning action

Lvl 4 Rogue (3)

Rogue Archetype: Assassin Or Swashbuckler (I could go Trickster for the usefulness of spells, but mehh.)
Sneak attack

Lvl 5 Rogue (4)

Feat: Mage Slayer

Lvl 6 Rogue (5)

Sneak attack
Uncanny Dodge

Lvl 7 Fighter (1)

Second Wind
Fighting Style Dueling (+2 damage)

Lvl 8 Fighter (2)

Action Surge (In case I miss one grapple)

Lvl 9 Fighter (3)

Battle Master (I think the maneuvers will help more than the champion's critical, to put an ennemy prone with a melee attack, then grappling him in the same round).

Lvl 10 Fighter (4)

+2 STR

The strategy I'll use most of the time is as follows:

Grab an improvised weapon that looks like a dagger and rage, go to an oponent and grapple, then shove him down to have advantage on him, and him disadventage. He can't go back up cause he has 0 movement, and I have +7 athletism with advantage for the grapple checks.

So that with mage slayer will be terribly awesome, especially with the +30 feet move in free action from the rogue.

I know about the feat Grappler as well, but.. it doesn't fit much in this build, as I don't need more advantages. The pin is nice, but a shoved down opponent is preferable for a rogue I believe.

Thoughts? :D

So jealous. I havent played D&D in the better part of a decade. All my friends that played moved away for jobs after college. This is about as close as I get to D&D these days. :(

Try the Weapon Master cheese builds with 3 clerics :D

Way to ultimate power. Or change one of the clerics for a wizard for the enchantment spells (some are like in 3rd Ed. which means they are damn stonk), and for some other buffs.

I found a combo with a halberd reach weapon. One feat allows for an attack of opportunity when someone gets within reach of your weapon rather than when exiting said zone. Another feats drop an opponent's movement to zero after you attack him with an attack of opportunity. So you just stand there 15 feet away from your melee opponent and taunt him into attacking. He gets within 10 feet, you attack as an opportunity, his movement drops to zero, and if his weapon isn't a reach one, he can't attack you. Subsequent rounds, just do all of your attacks and take a 5 feet step back, repeating the process. Not the most balanced of all characters but with a halberd and just a little space to move, he's gonna either win any melee fights or the other guy will run away. Maybe there's a third feat somewhere to deal with fleeing opponents.

Maybe you could use the combo defensively rather than offensively. Some kind of mage with a halberd and these 2 feats so the first melee attacker of every round never cross that final 5 feet square to attack you, and on your turn, you cast a spell and back down a little. The combos is just 2 feats and a weapon ; polearm master, sentinel and a halberd or glaive.
MmmmMMMMmmm, tasty humanz, hmmmmMMM!!!

Personally, I asbolutely LOVE 5th edition. I have a fighter/warlock that uses a glaive. (because that polearm feat is just too grand to not grab.)

We play once a month, in between our own homebrew game time.

Your character better have some magic if his concept is from mortal kombat xP..kano tends to get his organs removed on a regular basis.

Oh no, the concept isn't from MK :D Just the character's looks, cause he's a badass.

All of Kano's scenes were badass in that movie, lol. Even when he's between the legs of Sonia. (That could sound bad for someone who hasn't seen the movie, right? )
