Candlekeep Book Exchange

Unread post by Akroma666 »

The idea is to offer exp and gp based on turning in random world drop books. So when you kill that epic Yuanti Queen, and she drops a book about the history of the Time of Troubles that was magically thrown through a time ripple into the past.. You can at least turn it in for some small rewards at Candlekeep.
This would promote sever cleanliness and give a boon of visitors to Candlekeep. Scollars could perhaps rp and collect books and turn them in promoting character interaction rp.

Suggested numbers are: 25xp/20gp per book with no cap.

Numbers subject to change.

Hmm if this were implemented it would be nice to have something like that in the Underdark as well.

Hm, can you buy books somewhere and just bring them to Candlekeep? Maybe tag dropped books with a special variable.

Anyways. I don't think there shouldn't be a cap. Once a week you can't earn more than 1000xp with it? You would still have to find 50 books to hit the cap.

Which would mean that you get 20xp per book :).

I was thinking more likely a Drow npc in either the School of Mages or the Stonestave.

There's a very disused library in the School of Mages. Would be a perfect place for a similar UD NPC for this kind of thing.

Might be a more viable option? Just throwing it out there.

Candlekeep already pays quite a bit more for books and scrolls than any other merchant, just go to the guy inside the library lobby.

Edit: What might be cool and more easily done is a quest that rewards the turn-in of specific rare books. Books that stand out already do to, for example, spell usages, like "Book of the Waves" could possibly be flagged as rare and have a quest that offers a similar reward in gold and XP to other quests, and is doable once per week IF you find a rare book.

I don't actually know, I know he pretty much only buys books and scrolls (if he does buy something else I haven't found it, but I haven't been trying either) and I haven't found a book he won't buy. But I only made a habit of making sure to sell books there when I was playing Boddynock as my main, and only then if he didn't already have a personal copy.

I am not sure why there would be books he doesn't buy though, if they are all base item "book" that is.

Will post to project ideas to see if anyone wants to pick it up dev side. If we do XP there would have to be a cap, though, to prevent people from essentially buying their level ups.

Maecius, it's possible to specify a certain item 'category' that only grant the xp/gp when turned in. Sigil posted their script a while back and you might like to ask them if a modded version could be used here? Would require someone setting the relevant lorebook tags for requisite items in the toolset (preferrably loot drop items only and not books that can be purchased from CK itself, or the Writable book system), which is probably the most laborious aspect of the proposal.

Code: Select all

// Give books for xp and gold

const int XPAWARD = 50;
const int GPAWARD = 10;

void main()
{
object oPC = (GetPCSpeaker()==OBJECT_INVALID?OBJECT_SELF:GetPCSpeaker());

int iGold = 0;
int iXp = 0;

object oItem = GetFirstItemInInventory(oPC);
   while(GetIsObjectValid(oItem))
   {
 if(TestStringAgainstPattern("ps_lorebook_**",GetTag(oItem)))
 {
 	DestroyObject(oItem);
 iGold += GPAWARD;
 iXp += XPAWARD;
    }
    oItem = GetNextItemInInventory(oPC);
   }

GiveGoldToCreature(oPC, iGold);
GiveXPToCreature(oPC, iXp);
}

With the IC, DM-approved changes to Candlekee's library admittance policy, it'd be rather nice for loot drop books to still have a "use" at Candlekeep. :)
