Fighter heavy crossbow problems.

Evening and hello.

New player here, and i'm having a bit of a problem, not sure what's wrong as i can't find any problems looking through feats etc.

Playing a fighter Halfling with a main heavy crossbow. Lightshield/shortsword 2nd

My problem is that when standing in close combat with my crossbow mobs gets "attack of opportunity" on me every hit. I have point blank, rapid reload feats. I honestly don't know what's causing the AOO, can anyone enlighten me please ?

Attacks of opportunity occur against a person for these actions (if you are armed with a melee weapon and they are near enough for a melee attack):

Non-combat movement while in melee - moving into or out of a threatened area (Spring Attack denies all AoO from movement during combat. In theory, this could be used to prevent a melee opponent from landing an attack - with first Initiative, a character can land a blow, then move out of melee range before the opposing character makes an attack.)
Casting a spell without using defensive casting
Attempting to Taunt
Drinking a potion
Using Disarm (Improved Disarm does not provoke the AoO)
Firing a ranged weapon

Each mob should only get 1 free attack against you per round.

Yep, as Steve pointed out there is no way to avoid enemies taking an Attack of Opportunity against you when you use a ranged weapon at melee distance.

However, the Mobility feat does apply and will grant you +4 Dodge AC against each Attack of Opportunity if you have it

Just curious to see your build if possible.

As a fighter with a heavy x bow mobs should not be able to come near you, at all. Your damage early levels should be through the roof.

Have you got crossbow sniper and upgraded etc? Using multishot?

Maybe i'm doing something wrong then, going to reroll my character.

I have rapid reload, rapid shot (which i read is excluding crossbows ?) Crossbow sniper, but no multishot, i haven't seen that feat. str 14 dex 19 con 12 int 12 wis 10 cha 10 (only lvl 4)

I was talking with a couple of players today one told me i would get outclassed in epic lvl, i'm playing the character because i like the idea and i'm not really going for a godlike character.

Those players are right.

Xbow fighter will be awful epic levels, however it is a great way to level up to 21 to RCR to whatever the class you wanted to be.

So to level up as a fighter x bow... I would go for something like this perhaps? (Be aware cant choose x bow sniper improved on builder so replace whatever ya want with it)

So you get manyshot at 6 which is nice, if struggling atm go pay some people to help you with starter quests, find a group, or pay a mercenary to take you somewhere to get those 2 levels, after that you are a god untill epics.

However the problem is after 12 this char does not really improve much, he gets a bit better in the epics, but not by much.

You can look at builds like these to RCR into when you realise how boring the above will be, constantly pressing a button to manyshot and dying a little inside...

I have gotten to 23 with the build above and it is really fun. Pop a haste on yourself and watch most things die in 1-2 shots. My problem was I didnt really find him that fun rp wise as... bards... eurgh.. but he sure was strong - Was soloing Xvarts at level 10.

At the end of the day you also have to think what do I offer to a group if I have one, can I solo if I want to, and most importantly, do I enjoy the gameplay/rp about the character.

My main is a old dude who cant fight really with lots of heal skills and basically is just a warder/healer for the group who can stand there and take damage without handing any out.

Completely up to you what you enjoy!

Been looking at builds, I'd totally go for fighter crossbow until 21.

I really want to make a character that has Rp ties to the militia, sword n'board or crossbow.
Would it be possible to make a good fighter with sword n'board that wont be outclassed in epic lvls ? Should be dex based as i want to play as halfling.

I like the idea of crossbow bard, but rp wise it's not for me.
