Edit: Now going to Paris, then Chicago...
Hey all, I am headed to Lisbon a week from tomorrow for four days and, though I will have limited personal time as it is a work event I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for if I get a free afternoon or evening? Where should I go/what sights are must see if I only may have enough time to see one or two places?
Thanks everyone, hope you all are enjoying the new year! I was a bit bummed as all year I was hearing it would be in Athens, Greece where I have always wanted to visit, but honestly, having never been either place I really can't be upset. Plus I am told Lisbon is a gorgeous place to see so pretty excited!
EDIT: changed name of thread as now heading to Paris!

Some game of thrones filming, so you could be like "I was there". Though out of the way of the city. Lol
My personal view is in red, for I am fancy.

Re: Is anyone familiary with Lisbon, Portugal?
I've been there last summer for a weekend. Don't know how it will be during this time of the year. I would guess most places with a nice view could be closed. I visited a castello there, which had a mirror construction somewhere in the center, which can be used to have a look all around the surroundings of the castle in a very large radius.
And it was full of german tourists everywhere... (was kind of annoying for me as a german tourist n
)
And there is still the ocean. But must also be pretty cold right now.

Museum, zoo and oceanarium if you like those

Re: Is anyone familiary with Lisbon, Portugal?
Chad,
Check out MAAT. https://www.maat.pt/en It just got a huge upgrade, and the old coal powered electric museum walkthrough is rather a-mazing.
If you like art, you can't go wrong with visiting the Berardo Museum.
I also highly recommend being the full-on tourist and getting a table for pasteis de bélem. The Bélem district is a mix of tourist and just cool stuff, so don't be shy. One can also get to the waterfront by Bélem—the MAAT is there as well, and enjoy a walk along the Tejo river.
And, if you want to see the cool people of Lisboa, then go to the indoor market of Time Out.
However, my best recommendation is, that weather willing, just wander by foot. It is a friendly city, I'd say, and trust your gut as you explore.
PM me if you have any personal questions—I've been to Lisboa many times.

Re: Is anyone familiary with Lisbon, Portugal?
Wonderful city, was there for a week. If you want to visit anything, you should arrive when it opens or you will suffer.
The castle is not a big deal, I wouldn't really reccomend it, Belém is nice if you want to walk around a bit, and look at some museums, or pretty things generally.
Sadly you won't have time for a one day trip to Sinatra, becuse it is worth it if you like to hike a bit. The castle there, I found very ugly but for sure artistic, the Morish fort, however was much more interesting for me, has some really nice things if you are intrested in history.
Oh and if you like different temples, you will sure find a lot.
Seafood is very nice, I do reccomend it, the price is not astronomical, like in some places. You should try a smaller restaurant, the food can be very good (or horrible if you are unlucky, happend with me once).
So, in short, foodwise if you like seafood, this will be heaven for you, if not, it is still ok, but nothing out of ordinary.
Two more important things:
Taxi prices are reasonable, and someone really loved squares. They are everywhere, not joking. Small ones here and there, and large ones near anything important. It shows well how, at a certain era, people tried to show off their wealth.
Overall, it is a great city, I had a lot of fun while I was there.

Thanks DM Dagon, I am a big fan of seafood, especially shellfish, but I rarely have it as my wife is allergic, so I'll look forward to the cuisine! Not really worried too much about prices since the company will take care of all that stuff, but good to know I won't have an issue getting around as needed.

Re: Is anyone familiary with Lisbon, Portugal?
The roughest week since college (and that was 15-20 years ago).
Not because it was bad, it was actually quite good. However, some of my co-workers are quite the drinkers, so I basically was up until 2-5 AM every 'night' drinking with various people, making connections and the like, and then had to be at business meetings starting at 8 AM and lasting until 6 PM with a 1 hour lunch and two 30 minute coffee breaks. God those coffee breaks were insanely important!
Unfortunately I didn't get to see much as we were aways off from downtown and I was so tired when I arrived that Sunday night was lost (got there at 6, laid down for a 'minute' after I unpacked and woke up around midnight...) However, the area we were in was beautiful and the hotel was very nice. They do a much better job than we do in the States with most street signs, billboards, and menu's being in Portuguese, English and several other languages(though this seems to be the case throughout what little of Europe I've seen). The people were all very nice, including a cabby who turned the meter off and took me to an ATM because I didn't have Euro's yet and cab's there don't take credit cards (or at least, most of them don't). All in all it was a fun trip, but I am glad it was so short as I don't know how many more days I could have gone on an average of 4 hours of sleep and lots of glasses of scotch! Next up is Paris at the beginning of April, which will be another first for me!
Hoping this time around I get a day to just walk around and explore the way I did in London last year, but we'll see!

Aww shame.
Did you get to experience the square mania or the good seafood, at the least?
