New Folks, Come Hither

Unread post by SpoonDagger »

Just read a post that struck a chord with me, kinda wanted to thrown in my six pence, but it was sadly locked up.

Brace yourselves, gonna soap box Edited by Hawke for Rule #2 Violation

Been here a long Edited by Hawke for Rule #2 Violation time, had my RP ripped to shreds by FR's know-it-alls. Really sucks cuz I think of myself as fairly knowledgeable in FR lore. I'm also a runner, just don't have the free time to walk here and yonder. Anyways, my point is, this tiny little corner of the inner webs is a beautiful place. Please don't get frustrated or take it personally if your "betters" dislike what you're doing here. And if what you are doing here is trying to have an enjoyable time, please, carry on. The grind is real, on all fronts, so have fun and don't let someEdited by Hawke for Rule #2 Violation rain on your parade. Hope to RP with you soon! :)

Are you talking about Thayvian's post? I'd just like to comment as the mentioned 'Harry Potter Knock off' (read: wizard), there wasn't actually any metagaming from what I saw at all. His character, completely IC, put up a recruitment sign and Lauron, completely IC being anal and rude, insulted the other character's grammar and pointed out that an unauthorized militia could be called bandits and killed. I had no idea he was getting angry OOC, but to restate a point he made, perfectly nice LG farmers are boring. Some characters will be rude.
I'm not sure how my rude antisocial bookworm was seen as a Harry Potter knock off though.

Sorry for the rant. The thread where all that was posted got locked before I could say anything.
If you meant a DIFFERENT thread, please tell me, that would be embarrassing for me.

Sorry for any grammar problems, writing from my phone at 1 AM

Ditto, Lauron. I was there too as the "Dwarf who Metagamed and called him an idiot with a sign".

What I saw was a bunch of people all roleplaying their character's personal motivations and quirks. What he did (unknowingly?) was try and recruit for the Marines at Woodstock. I also had no idea this guy took things as OOC and personal attacks. Honestly, the only slightly off comment I saw in character was when someone asked what the milita would be called, then sarcasticly askes, "Minute Men?".

I felt fairly insulted when it was implied no Dwarf could possibly want to poke fun at a human. Especially not a Dwarf wearing a bear skin as a hair-piece. Some of the other rookies (particularly elves) present had interacted with three or more of my characters, all of which were unique, quirky, memorable, and in character.

Personally, I love helping out rookies. The Halfling Nineveh played by "Urbancat" I've helped extensively. Even taking the time to make them a build on Nwn2db, and give them free gear.

Much of this angst floating about isn't warranted.

^^^^^^This...

It is really frustrating when a player calls out one or more players and attacks their RP for "Meta-gaming" or poor RP or whatever. Often times, it is a true sign that the individual crying foul is at least partially at fault for the situation. If you just focus on YOUR character and YOUR RP and react to others as YOUR character would, without worrying if the other player is doing it 'right' everyone will have a lot more fun. Just because someone pokes fun at your character doesn't mean they have anything against you, maybe their character is just a jerk, or maybe their character has something against the dogma your PC is preaching or the actions they are taking. End of the day, it's a medium RP server so if everyone would just start off with the ASSUMPTION that other players are just here trying to have fun and not to grief you specifically it'd go a long way to more enjoyable stories being told. Antagonistic RP is FUN so what is wrong with rolling with it? What's the saying about people in glass houses throwing the first stone? Right, they shouldn't do it! ;)

Happy gaming everyone.

I was a G&T, Minnesota Mule and about 4 tall ones in when I wrote this post :? I think my original intention was to say, don't let anyone rub you the wrong the way and just do your thing. I agree the forums are not a place to call people out. That being said, there are definitely elitists that instead of kindly telling you what you may be doing wrong, will tear you down like you're an ignorant moron. I've been on the receiving end of that before, and if you're thin skinned, I can see how one might take offense.

Now, how the hell do I make a viable late game fighter...do I just need better gear? Ugh.

Unfortunately non-casters are very much dependent upon gear. Fortunately it is much easier to get now that there are epic shops. If you need specific build help feel free to pm me or post to the character building section. If the problem is affording epic shop gear I'm happy to help with how to earn gold fairly quickly when you need to.

Edit: because my phone's auto correct sucks...

This is sooo true. I told someone two days ago on another forum that I use teamspeak not dischord because I don't want to download it. They replied saying "I'll get your IP from TS kid and ddos you". Oh and on the Wargaming forum I asked if anyone rank 4 wanted to group up and received literally 3 pages on why people hate potato's.

I might have stoked the fire a bit on the first guy by posting this in reply

Potato = noob in wargaming vocabulary. Presumably from the "I can count to potato" meme that is associated with learning disabilities ever since "retard" became a no-no word.

Erm i was making an IG joke... prob should have been OOC but did not intend the comment to be taken as an insult either way.

Ideally, we'll all be able to support one another, new players and old. It's worth remembering that it takes a few months to really learn the server, and its norms. And frightening off our new people is a good way to see a server die over time.

That being said, it's also worth remembering that it does take a few months to really learn a new place, and how things are done, particularly with a group like this where there's almost ten years of history. New players should try to exercise patience, and ask questions, and try not to worry about making occasional errors.

Truth be told, even I make mistakes, like when I say something in character without realizing that a DM event a month or two ago completely changed the lore I thought I knew about the place. I still remember when I found out that Triel wasn't a town on our server anymore. I hadn't even gotten a chance to visit it in game before it was destroyed! So our server lore does take some getting used to, and some learn-as-you-go. Which is what vets should be helping new players with, in particular, since it's not always easy to just look that stuff up.

I have no idea what I´m doing dot jpg in terms of FR lore, and frankly, I´m probably never going to. Zero. Nada. Same with RP. I had to learn to (( last night.

I´m here to enjoy this IP, because that I know: I love what´s been put together by you, by whoever is behind the IP. And that drives me in a way, I carry on as a new man would, guided only by the love -- no other way to call it. I´m open to learning, to be respectful, and if anyone gives me cr*p well, that´s not what I´m here for, and most importantly, I know it´s not what D&D is about. I remember my first and only pen and paper game to date, long story short I didn´t understand anything and got kicked out quite soon, but it blew my mind to discover what was possible. That you could create your own LOTR and adventure in it, that´s a sensation only RPs know, and it´s one of the most amazing sensations.

Thank you guys for being kind to me, last night was my first and I found really warm, welcoming people, so patient with me.

My two coins.

What Maecius said, I always go out of my way to make new players feel welcome if I see any in game, and try to give them a bit of lee-way as they are new. BG can be a very scary place for a new player; you are thrown into this huge world with no real guide.

Although you will get a few arguments and disagreements IC and OOCly I try to shrug it off for the good of the server without new blood this server will slowly die out. If you really can't stand the player you can always just avoid them. New blood isn't very common here I used to try and keep an eye out for them I counted roughly 4 - 6 a week and most of these people barely last 7 days

The common problem I have noticed is new players not being able to 'fit in' a lot of groups are very 'closed off' and it can make RP difficult for the new players unless they actively go around and scream for attention. I have been thinking of new ways to try and make the server more 'newb friendly' and may do a forum post asking for further ideas later this week.
