Adequate airflow, ingress and egress. Compress can air use on any heatsinks. Check CPU fan RPMs.

You could try limiting the FPS of the game, see if that helps.

I have an I5 laptop. Never overheats from this age old game ever......Not sure why you are having problems Lok.....Maybe don't overclock your GPU? I mean not like this game needs much from your GPU at all.....I never even plug into my NVidia GTX980 ever for this. Hell not even for SKYRIM. I have yet to find a game that needs much more than what I have onboard my laptop....with an I5.....I run this game full bore too. Never overheats my GPU or Processor at all. There is something else going on that is not the game at all.

Had the issue when my fan wasn't working well on my old PC. Worked fine for everything but couldn't keep up with the game.

Check your fan, make sure it is working and make sure that its working at full capacity.

When I get hot, I drink water and it helps.

That is because nothing else you have will make your fan run. Check to see if your fan even turns on. IT IS NOT THE GAME! It is very unlikely this is a software issue and is most likely a hardware issue. I urge you to check that rather than blame an age old game for something it is not doing since I run a subpar processor compared to you with no issue on games far more taxing than this one. Your hardware parts that move are going out most likely and need replacement. If it is a software issue then for some reason your GPU is not running its fans when heating up and this is not a game that tells it to do that......

If it's a desktop PC, it's very easy to replace the CPU fan with a better one than stock. Especially if it's intel, stock intel fans are terrible.

True in the C2D days (2006) but as the die shrinks have occurred there's less of a need beyond stock as long as ambient is nominal.

Its not a perfect solution but try using a cooling pad. A powerful enough cooling pad built into your comp, or put under your laptop can mitigate 25-50% of the heat.
