The Mind...
A man of complimentary contradictions whose mind was almost entirely carved out by the experiences he had gone through. He is a warrior through and through, one that finds joy in battle and victory yet he greatly values life. To him if you love something you must protect it and the value of a warrior is one of someone who fights so that those who can't don't have to.
In essence; The worth of a warrior is determined by whom or what he fights. A weak warrior harasses the weak.
This combination of a desire to protect all that which is alive be it people, animals or nature itself with his undeniable roots as a warrior result in a somewhat stubborn man who will oft speak his mind against that which he finds distasteful yet knows when to back down. If his desire to protect people, results in not killing that which goes on to kill others does that not mean their blood is on his hands? If so is it his choice to make to endanger the lives of others or take someones life? Life itself is oft a dizzying array of grey. And a burden that he will carry and shield himself from with the helm he almost always wears.
The world itself is one filled with countless injustices, callous actions of leaders, prosecution of tieflings, a world of haves and have nots where the child starves and the merchant or noble fattens up, hypocritical knights whose honour has decayed in the dungeons of obedience, and on and on.
The one who drives his people to extremities can not be a leader.
The Before...
Yuris current known life started with being found by an adventuring party of a Dwarf, a Tiefling and a Human in the charred remains of an ambushed Elven Caravan. Leaving him as a child in the hands of said band with only his name, an unopenable scroll case and a presumably family sword. Whoever his real parents are, where they are from or where they are remains a mystery. Possibly in the scroll case itself? Though who knows what its contents even are.
It is so that Yuri grew up constantly on the road, seeing the many villages of the Sword Coast come and go some even ceasing to exist entirely until he began to adventure on his own in earnest. It is in the company of his adoptive parents that he learned many of his values, though moreso martial prowess. Unfortunately this experience left him somewhat imbalanced, stunted and odd. In a sense he was taught by everyone but his own people on who he is. Likely forever leaving him an oddball and outcast in the eyes of everyone. Only truly beginning to explore the coast when his parents, save for the Dwarf, died due to a passage of time.
Thoughts on Races...
Humans - "They sure don't live very long... I like them quite a lot although it's hard to tell if they're good or bad people. But the freedom is their charm."
Elves - "An Evil race of hypocrites. I assume the Seldarine are an Evil Pantheon but my thoughts on that have changed. A rare few of them are alright. And there's worse evils out there. I wouldn't kill them despite what they may think. I know how much they adore killing other Elves. I guess they're kin too, sadly. Do I hate myself? I guess I do. It's nobodies fault that they were born an Elf. Thinking about it really does make me realise how much self loathing I have for being an Elf."
Drow - "A scourge to be exterminated. Their society is nonsense and a mechanism of self destruction. I feel bad for them but for the vast majority of them there is no salvation."
Eilistraeen Drow - "Poor persecuted people. A minority of the Drow population that isn't completely messed up in some way. Not accepted by their kin below or above, or anyone. An awful way to live."
Dwarves - "The best people with the best of crafts and brews. I probably have too much of a sense of kinship to them through my adoptive dad."
Half-Elf - "They're alright. The human side probably balances things out."
Half-Drow - "A fate similar to the Eilistraeens. Disliked and unwanted everywhere, an awful and unjust fate for the crime of being born."
Half-Orc - "Sad. I can't imagine such a being came to conception through... willing means... but its not their fault for being born."
Halflings - "Nice jovial people. Even the weird ones have been pleasant."
Aasimar - "They're like Genasi. Aren't they? More goodly origin Tieflings? They're okay."
Genasi - "I never know what quite to make of them. I'm not sure if I like them or not? I don't hate them."
Orc - "Race? They're not a race. They're a stain. The only way this world will know peace is when not even a single orc remains alive."
Tiefling - "More persecuted peoples for the crime of being born. This world loves injustice."
Gnomes - "What? I guess they're like... small hin? Strange dwarves? I rarely see this lot."
Fae - "They're an interesting and terrifying lot. I've seen their Dryad Empress, Queen thing. She was very polite and cordial. And the Toad king was lovely too, albeit a bit out of his mind like all Fae tend to be. I enjoy their company so long as they don't try to pull a fast one on me but that's like being surprised that an orc burned down your house when you built it near an Orc camp. You have to be ready for it."
Kobold - "The little things think they're dragons! Their 'rawr's are endearing, they'd be adorable if they weren't all so murderous. Though I've seen some that aren't. There's more harmful things out there and their existence is closer to hin bandits than anything. Not ideal but I can see them do better perhaps?"
Thoughts on Gods...
Seldarine (Old) - "They must be an Evil Pantheon given the general tendencies of my Elven Kin."
Seldarine (Current) - "A good pantheon, not really sure what to think on them beyond that. It's very Elf focused which... I don't really like my kin. But the pantheon and its ideas are good and their foundations solid."
Dark Seldarine - "The world would be better with all these gods dead and gone."
Eilistraee - "Very honourable and admirable goddess. To fight against all the odds, the self sacrifice and knowledge of doing a thankless task simply because you believe it is right. She is a true warrior to her core. Her dedication to protecting the innocent, the persecuted and fight injustice is truly inspiring. I've yet to encounter a god that aligned so well with my ideals and inspired me as much as she has. Corellon must have been a very good father for her to turn out the way she has. It takes a lot of strength and a strong will to do what she does."
Tempus - "A warrior god! I like him though not as much as Eilistraee. He's not as much of an underdog as she is. He doesn't have even a tint of protecting the innocent and persecuted as she does."
Ilmater - "The Human god I like the most. His dedication to the oppressed and the suffering is extremely admirable. If I was a Human I'm sure he'd be my primary object of worship."
Auril - "Evil goddess. But isn't winter generally evil and harsh? For an Evil goddess she isn't particularly bad in my experience. Feels closer to a force of nature. Uncaring and cruel, callous even. But their clergy is amongst the more pleasant I've seen. When the time comes we will fight once more I am certain, but then spring shall come to that conflict with the next winters conflict on the horizon. But they respect me, so I respect them in kind."
Cyric - "The Idiot God, The Great Fool, The Failure. Hate him. Can't wait till he is deposed."
Mystra - "She... really needs to stop dying."
If any dates are wrong please let me know, I have been terrible at documenting what Yuri participates in and this is partly to help keep track of what I can remember.
Due to rewriting and ret-conning a portion of his backstory to be more cohesive and just overall better as I fleshed it out over the years the old one doesnt fully apply but I'll keep it archived for posterity.
