Why cant I go to jail?

Unread post by Tekill »

So why not a prison system?
This must have have been brought up before, right?
What was the outcome of previous discussion?

A Jail could be something super simple. A room in the basement of the Ducal Palace or Flaming fist Headquarters. A DM could port a naughty player into this cell for period of real time maybe a week or so. This isn't a life sentence -you could say is was something like 'the rack' or Sky Cell (GoT) - so short term sentences would be ample to fit the crimes instead of life sentences or the like. DM's could time it - discussion on crimes and punishments can be RP'd out by players and DM's alike.
It would create a whole new wold of rp possibilities.
The accused player may require to give consent to be jailed, just like the pvp 'opt out' thing. But any decent RPer would love getting sent to the clink for his/her deeds.
And if set up properly it could only really involve minimal DM involvement- ooc correctional officers....basically. A lot of it would be RP - properly RP'd The DM is only just porting people in and out jail- maybe keeping track of the duration of the prisoners stay.
During a reset prisoners would automatically port back to the cell.
Evil players could be held accountable and lawful players can truly enforce justice ( including my new paladin). From a perspective of a player that, up until now, only played evil, it would help a lot with actually doing bad things. I was always afraid of becoming an outlaw and be blacklisted/excluded from regular events and doing simple things like hanging out at the FAI.
Now, I can commit the crime and if I get caught, I would do my time instead of just being iced out of RP- Being stigmatized a Saturday morning villain or whatever its called.
Suffice to say, I think a prison would help solve a lot of problems RPing good/evil law/chaos conflict.
We would still need to use common sense but creating actual law and order and a criminal system would really give us all the proper outlet we need to better interact with each others alignments. Its the consequences a lot of us have been arguing for.
If we could put the prison system, in the hands of the players. You could have policing, trials juries....judgement, prison guards, jail breaks, parole....
Wrongfully accused - that would be fun! I been framed, oh nu! And once the time is done...the evil player won't necessarily be a wanted outlaw anymore....freeing them up to allow them to easily transition over to the next chapter of their character.
What say you?

Unless it was removed at some point, there is a dungeon with jail cells. Spent plenty of hours there, as a player and DM.

Won't the guards port you there for weapons out anymore? I guess I havent tested the consequence for a long time.

Speaking as someone who has had one of my characters essentially jailed for a couple of real life months, it is one of the most excruciatingly dull experiences ever. The payoff was great thanks to some awesome RPers and an amazing DM, but gosh that wait ...

We used to have a lot of "dungeons" RP. Particularly back when the Flaming Fist was a player faction.

Unfortunately, as wangxiuming intimates, it tends to be really, really boring for the imprisoned player after a few hours.

This is the reason there are rules in place preventing anyone from being held, even for RP purposes, beyond 72 hours:
DM Rulings: A Record of DM Decisions wrote:Capture Rule
If a player's PC is captured by another faction or PC, the RP for the capture is to be completed within 72 hours. If the player's character has not been rescued we either expect the captors to allow the character in question the ability to escape, or to execute the prisoner (this is up to the captors). If the captor cannot do this in 72 hours, the character is to be believed to have escaped and is back in the game.

Well, I was thinking that the punished PC just has to sit there and rot- its supposed to be boring. But the punished player can simply play an alt until times up.

Unless there is reason to RP something related to his/her prison stay...like a jailbreak!

Its would really be about what leads up to the jail stay and then I guess what happens afterwards. I see the prison stay is as more like an intermission.

I sort of changed my opinion. There does not seem to be a lot of interest in large organized leagal justice system. Probably a good idea as it would be run by those corrupt flaming fist mask hating thugs.
The capture rule would play a factor as well.
So that leave individuals guilds and factions to take the law into thier own hands I guess.
So RP wise would my pally of Tyr turn criminals in to the flaming fist or can he take matters into his own hands. I guess I'm looking for tips on how to rp following protecting and enforcing laws. Should I build my own jail and play sheriff?
There arw also trials...I want to rp trials too. How?

Once upon a time the DMs and the player base had a conversation about player-led trials. (This was back around 2013.)

The rules that were being proposed by one of the DMs at the time were not bad rules, but they gave too much power to the Order of the Radiant Heart and the Order of the Silver Rose (who were named as the only people who could play the role of either "judge" or "prosecutor"). And although the judge didn't actually determine guilt or innocence, they did pick out the jury (who did).

All in all, it would have been a highly one-sided system.

We've never had a strong "Church of Tyr" faction to moderate legal proceedings either.

In the end, it's probably better to leave law and order determinations to the DMs. If a player enacts vigilante justice out in the wilds, that's one thing; but it won't be recognized by the political powers that be unless the DMs get involved and sign off on it.

Keep in mind that any map without a guard NPC is effectively treated as lawless. So that means the laws of your faith apply and no others!. You can be the judge jury and executioner so long as you heed to the teachings of Tyr.

Many people focus a little to much on the modem mortality and definition of law. However DnD is closer to the middle ages. They are typically harsh and more often then not governed by faith, In most cities there is no separation of religion and state, Neverwinter for example heeds to Tyr and its the temple that typically decides guilt unless the person is high born or of interest to the king. My suggestion is do a quick google search on medieval laws and punishments then compare with Tyrs dogma and other famous faithful in books. Then when outside of the city enforce the combination your character has come up with. When inside the city however its a DM that decides.

I'll throw my two cents in here, for what it's worth.

Back in my days on Dasaria, I actually was a PC guardsman. And that is exactly what it sounds like.

There was as faction, called the Redboot Brigade, who at first was an elite military force, but ended up as the defacto law enforcement for the city of Daris. I was one of the lower-tier guardsman (I think a corporal?) that stood watch, and walked the beat.

We had the ability to 'tag' a player with a jail key. If, after we tagged them, they were taken down afterword, they respawned in a jail cell in Daris. They had to remain there for fifteen minutes before the cells would opeen and they could leave (no magic worked, etc.)

Of course, this came with the whole great power, great responsibility" on the part of both the higher members of the 'Boots, as well as the GMs. Whenever we had to use our keys, we had to write up an arrest report on the incident, and post it in the Redboot forums, under the arrest thread.

In addition, we didn't get given keys for a LONG, LONG while and had proven ourselves to our commanders that we would act responsibly with them.

Yes sir that had to have been fun. I'd be like...you wear black plate- here's your key. Thanks for coming out.

But actually...yeah I kind like the whole outside The Gate juridiction thing...wild west style. I'll be like a Texas ranger...maybe a little paladin bounty hunter of out laws....one tyrian trying to trying to keep justice over a massive territory. That can work.
