So, I'm a new player.

I am a first day player, technically. I couldn't get things running yesterday.
After some support from GOG and a server crash in the middle of writing my very first Bio that I was so proud of...

Here's how it went.
For about 2 hours I had that WOW feeling (still do in fact). I walked and/or ran around for a few minutes, turned down the first quest or whatever, deciding to explore a bit on my own - you know? Do some real quest for glorying, that kind of thing. Well, next, I found myself in some shady thief's (was he? idk) house, buying stuff because I like stuff. I was kind of scared of him tbh.

Then, after all was said and done, I left town. Rather confused about where I was heading, I eventually decided to turn around. I didn't even have a weapon! Well, I asked someone for directions Big world you know!? All right, I thought, I have little RP experience, but I'm giving this a shot!! It went okay.. Felt like a nub though.

Well, then I ended up buying stuff at the inn, you know, just to tide me over, but no weapon shop in sight! I found someone to help me OOC through /tp for a bit, so that was nice! Everyone seemed so nice! And in character, it's really cool.

Well, finally, I took my glorified questing butt outside to get some experience, but low and behold... my stupid torch wouldn't light?! Ugh. So much to learn. Stood there about ten minutes, wondering if someone could help. I didn't feel like asking, so, I logged out. I feel like this post of my first afternoon's play would be useful to someone. Hopefully me!

Anyway, cool game! I barely know how to play, as I've always wanted my experience to include others, but I'd say that's only half of my *false start* - the other being that this server is so much more complicated! A good thing, in my opinion, but if I had one question, it'd be "how do I figure out all this stuff??" Really, though. Looking forward to learning.

In and near Baldur's Gate city, at both the Caravan stop and the docks, there are signboards/billboards that give a ton of information, in-character, for the beginner.

Try finding them. And...welcome!

Basic weapons are sold among the tents just outside the city, through the East Gate!

I have also consequently discovered that the 'broken' torch VFX will appear if you keep it in hand and then enter a transition to another zone.

Thanks for the replies. I somehow hit level 2 with help, earlier today. I guess I should work on my bio for the DM's so I can level up again Of course, I'll probably die again... So hard, playing as a level 2 Bard

I wish I had a wish spell, I would wish for lots of very powerful friends! Maybe I can write their deeds and all that jazz. Of course, if I did wish for that... well, I'd have to be careful they didn't get me killed

Utilize the scry and write something like "New player looking for RP" and people will likely seek you out

Did you have your torch attached to a hotbar? I don't believe they'll work if hotkeyed.

Yep, if you throw something on scry stating you are new and looking to group up or RP you will likely become quite popular... I'm sure you will have a party of 4-6 similarly leveled adventurers to kill baddies and loot their goodies faster than you can transition to hilltop ruins.

Thank you so much for the helpful tips! I'm a day 3 noob now, whatever that's worth. I felt like rerolling as a level 1 Swashbuckler, as it fits into my character persona. Not sure about rules such as 3b20... I definitely want to continue roleplaying as a Bard; it's so much fun!

Well, on the torch thing: I got the lantern to turn on - have not tried using a torch again since. I'll try again this afternoon.

Also, I suppose my bio is a work in progress, but I have one. I do write (freelance - not for a living or anything), but I am quite decent at the whole biographical genre. So, I have one more question. How many bytes/kb can the quest journal "Notes" take? And, is it stored client-side or server? I tend to use it, and have already written about 1/10th of a book (1k characters).

P.S. - as far as RP, the book I'm doing is in one of those 50g books (on character A) my 2nd level bard. I'm kind of thinking about copying it over to a word file and possibly submitting it via Character B (my 1st level Swashbuckler) at a later date. I don't think it's too specific to break RP at this point. Just a heads up.

As far as 3b20 it just means you must have at least 3 levels in all classes you are going to take by the time you reach level 20. So for instance you could have a Bard12/SB5/Duelist3 if you wanted to, but you could not have a B13/SB5/D2. So just make sure you plan your build out as to what you want to have at level 30 so you can ensure all classes are level 3 by the time you reach 20th level.

Here is a decent site for building, though it is no longer recommended you view random builds as there have been some issues with hackers on the site. Anything you build for yourself is fine though. You just have to realize that not everything implemented with Kaedrin's pack is available on the server, nor are all classes you can take on BG included in Kaedrins, so it is an imperfect solution, but one that should work for your needs:

I just put the lantern in my hand, and it looked pretty lit (no pun intended). I'm not entirely sure that there was a light radius on the lantern, but it sure looks pretty

Going to try the torch the way you all mention, for the moment, then will possibly be looking for group It would be cool if I RP learning to play an instrument as an SB!
