Baldur's Gate : The Sword Coast Chronicles : NWN2 Persistent World

I'm playing a Transmutation specialist DC wizard, and just hit level 15 today. When looking through the list of available spells I noticed some server (or possibly Kaedrin) specific ones, and one in particular was Whirlpool. It's a transmutation spell, so presumably the fort save DC would be good on my wizard (eventually). It has a knockdown effect that might be good vs sneaks since its AoE, and maybe even enemy mages. It also makes the enemy vulnerable to lightning so maybe doing a hotbar macro to cast whirlpool and then a quickened scintillating sphere or something could be a cool combo? Anyway, im just curious as to whether or not this spell is even worth using.


Also, I noticed Greater Bestow Curse is also Transmutation. Is it worth using? This one I guess would be particularly useful against bosses and in PVP if its useful at all.

Greater Bestow Curse is a good spell to use on bosses if they don't have stupidly bloated will saves to resist it that is. Equates to -3 AB/Damage, -3 all saving throws, -3 AC and - HD x3 hitpoints.

It works well on PCs for the same reason, except they have to go and get a cleric/mage (or server reset) to get rid of it because resting does not break a curse, only the Remove Curse spell does. Greater Bestow Curse + Quickened Ray of Enfeeblement will cripple any str based class (-12 to -17 Str for those two spells combined), perfect for a Bigby 6 follow up.

Whirlpool is reasonable; I've not used it much but the knockdown effect is situationally great and sometimes it will summon a water elemental or two out for you for a few minutes or so.

Thanks for the swift reply All these new spells seem interesting, but the last thing I wanna do is waste a spell on them and lose out because of it.

[Edit] Looks like Greater Bestow Curse can't be scribed at the moment. Apparently Whirlpool can, though.

Oh awesome. I didn't know I could get scrolls from Clerics if we share the same spells. So do clerics also get whirlpool? I think its description mentions it as a cleric and druid spell.

Yes, its Cleric 8th. A 15th level or higher cleric with scribe scroll can make it, and so can Sirion Ted'wa of Phoenix Company fame.

Bestow Curse and Greater Bestow Curse are Necromancy... not transmutation.

It was changed last year.

Bestow Curse is Necromancy. Greater Bestow curse is Transmutation. I have the logs to prove both.

Maybe it changed in the meantime, but I just scribed it and it worked fine. My prohibition school's necromancy btw.

I get it... but I'm telling you, try to cast them with necromancy as a prohibited school.

It just seems to frustrate you as the forbidden spell escapes you.


Or at least those are the messages I received when trying to scribe the spells.

So as someone with ESF Necromancy it's better to cast Bestow Curse, rather than GBC?
