Broken items and can they be restored

Unread post by Arcanum »

Hello all
My character Kasharren is played as a Adventure Merchant he sells and trade items that he finds. For the pass months now he would found many broken items in his adventures. I was wondering if it was possible to have items that are found wither it be on a NPC or in a locked chest be restored by a merchant or a mage? maybe even make a quest adventure out of it. Its just an idea. Would really like to see what that item was and why it was broken in the first place. Anyway just a thought love this server keep up the good work. :D

Yeah having a chance to break items inside chests (when bashing) and giving the ability to repair those would be neat I think, keeping the idea.

I am absolutely all for the "you've broken the crap you were trying to get to because you couldn't be bothered to bring along that shady fellow with the fiddly fingers, and instead just beat the crap out of the box."

The idea of being able to fix said item (Take it to Thunderfury's- that lightning hammer has to be able to do amazing things, after all) is also a great idea- Takes the sting out of having potentially bashed up something worthwhile, but then you're rolling the dice to discover if you've just spent 100gp (arbitrary and randomly generated price, btw) to repair an empty wine bottle.

 having no clue about what you're repairing sounds mean, perhaps that would be a good occasion to make use of analyze dweomer spell.

YES FINALLY! SO back in the day Kory used to collect broken items. Did a lot of bashing. Never did have a way to repair them. Eventually dumped around 40 of them into a trash......

And suddenly everyone starts dipping rogue for Open Lock instead of this actually encouraging party play.

I can extend the idea to the item named "broken item" and turn it into some randomly chosen low level item sure !

And no come on this is to add a fun mechanic

Now you are just driving Shekells out of broken item collection business.

Depends on who you ask, man. It's a proposed gold sink, and those never work. It'll be even more painful to those low-strength characters, because suddenly they can't pick which of the items they pick up that will sell the best.

What is actually fun about this mechanic except adding yet another "identify at merchant" mechanic that costs gold? Extremely few people are going to be preparing Analyze Dweomer for looting, and even fewer are going to be able to cast it in the first place. Easier for the low strength characters to just get open lock, then and avoid that step.

Meanwhile, the strength focused characters will only notice they have more things to pay gold at merchants to have "identified".

So in the end, this is as ineffective a gold sink as every other gold sink we've ever added. And there's nothing inherently fun about it.

If you want to add "fun mechanics", you have to do so in a way that the players feel they can choose to take part in that mechanic or not - and not lose out by not taking part in it.

If fun is only adding positives then I guess the idea is out.

Trust in Deathgrowl to see the negative sides of a matter. I personally would welcome such a change.

That wasn't what I said. You have to make it actually fun. Somehow rewarding even if there is a loss to it. If you are going to break an item by bashing a chest and having to repair it - and that part happens whether you want to take part in that mechanic or not - you have to make sure that that particular experience is a fun one. Every player who has to go through it, whether they are soloing or partying, has to feel like the mechanic was worth it after the whole ordeal has been gone through.

Otherwise, it isn't going to be fun for everyone.

You've just come to this realization?!?

EDIT: As to the OP, it would be at least nice if broken items could be set to craft item, so that using in a workbench gives some reward to dragging the stuff home from farming.
