Dwarven Warlock...
I'm not saying I want to play this, but I realized that Warlocks seem to focus in CON instead of pure DEX like I originally assumed. Would Dwarf make a good candidate mechanically for a Warlock then? What about Roleplay-wise? Maybe a Duergar? What about surface dwarves? Just curious!

Re: Dwarven Warlock...
I'm not sure where the con-lock comes from (though most likely hellfire warlock), but either dex or charisma is important for warlocks, depending on whether you want to be a blaster or a controller. A blaster needs dex to hit, a controller needs cha to pump his DCs.
That said, you could probably make a viable blaster warlock from a shield- or gray dwarf, or a viable controller from a gold dwarf.

Oh okay, my bad. I must've been mistaken about the whole CON thing.

Nope, not wrong about the CON thing. You can get by just fine as a (dwarf?) warlock with 16 dex, 6 CHA and maxxed CON. Just have to focus on blast abilities rather than DC. Having Improved Combat Expertise, 500 HP, Retributive Invisibility + unlimited spells is going to win a lot of fights.

Ohhh okay, awesome. Idk how I'd RP an evil dwarven warlock but I was just curious about the CON bonus thing since it seems like an unlikely combo of race and class.

There's no real synergy with constitution on a warlock, though, unless you go hellfire warlock. Basically if you play a pure warlock with high constitution, you're a sponge. High HP (and fortitude) is your only benefit.
Dexterity warlock gets AB to RTA, which is in my opinion far more useful for a blaster warlock.

Con lock is usually a hellfire blaster warlock with a shield and in medium armor.Babuguuscooties wrote:I'm not saying I want to play this, but I realized that Warlocks seem to focus in CON instead of pure DEX like I originally assumed. The primary reason for maxing con is because hellfire warlocks use their constituation as ammunition. So you can use hellfire longer, without getting dangerously squishy. In addition to that you may qualify for fast healing feats. Now, warlocks also may get immunity to sneak attacks infinite stoneskin with the right invocations, and that's in addition to resistances to to elemental attacks and inherent damage resistance which goes up to 7/cold iron.
So... yeah, that is a sponge, but this is a very tough sponge that can outlast many things.

To be honest, a spongy warlock sounds kind of fun to play compared to the HiPSing kind, which I assume the DEX version generally is? Idk.

Nah, dex warlock can be just pure warlock. Or the weird and slightly lore inappropriate daggerspell warlocks.

Oh okay. So is Hellfire Warlock fully functioning as a PrC? Seems like I heard it was bugged a little while ago, or something?

It is fully functional. Two gotchas, though:Babuguuscooties wrote:Oh okay. So is Hellfire Warlock fully functioning as a PrC? Seems like I heard it was bugged a little while ago, or something?
1. You need to rest every time after leaving nexus. Otherwise hellfire might not work. (nexus dispels "hellfire aura" which is apparently somehow used by hellfire scripts)
2. If your race has racial resistance to fire, it might not stakc properly with hellfire warlcok fire resistance.
Also, I believe bgtscc restricted hellfire warlocks to evil alignment only.

Also, I met a dwarven hellfire warlock before. The guy was a worshipper of Hoar, and thought that the flames were granted by that deity. It was like I described - shield + medium armor + hellfire. The dude had no problem soloing naga temple, and dealt decent damage.

Re: Dwarven Warlock...
On BG, this is just not true. With a 14/16 dex, you will only miss on a 1. Charisma locks on BG do well until epics when the critter saves are off the charts.Zanniej wrote:I'm not sure where the con-lock comes from (though most likely hellfire warlock), but either dex or charisma is important for warlocks, depending on whether you want to be a blaster or a controller. Con Locks are the way to go. Match with 3 levels if Dragonslayer and your saves will be great. I have one con lock with 32 fort, 24 reflex, 35 will, 50 a/c, 500+ hp...self-buffed only.

Re: Dwarven Warlock...
The only thing I noticed is that the fix that was applied for the "death ward" exploit, which is fine in it self. With that said though, know that if your friends (or enemies) buff you with any of the "exploiting" buffs, you can't use hellfire abilities.Babuguuscooties wrote:Oh okay. Re: Dwarven Warlock...
My conlock is level 18 and has only died once. And that was in an epic area, the ruins of a dwarven city (CR 25) while soloing. So I'd say pretty powerful.
