When that bridge has been crossed however, she is open and friendly, if prone to asking a lot of questions about things she is unfamiliar with. She greatly dislikes being offered gifts she feels she hasn't earned, and convincing her to accept one such would be an uphill verbal struggle.

Background: Born and raised in Dagger Falls, in Daggerdale, Amithae did not have the happiest of childhoods, as the dale was occupied by the Zhentarim when she was only seven. Life under Zhent control taught her to look after herself - her father had been slain in the fighting and her mother had all but shut down emotionally, doing little but weaving garments to make ends meet. Her elder brother Gareth was of no help, as he was lured into joining the Black Network as a soldier in his early teenage years.
Left to her own devices, Amithae learned fast to keep her head down and avoid attracting attention. Her one companion during her early teenage years was an elderly dwarven locksmith named Torram Brightblade. Essentially filling the void left by her deceased father, the kindly dwarf showed the curious girl the basics of his trade, and when she was older, introduced her to a few members of a group that was hoping to create a cohesive resistance inside Dagger Falls itself. From them, she learned how to fight with daggers and other small blades, things that could be concealed and carried easily around town. Her natural agility proved to make her a good match for the fighting styles the resistance members favored, and she honed her skills quietly while still doing her best to avoid trouble.
When she turned twenty, misfortune struck her. Trying to reconcile with her brother over drinks, Gareth bought a round and she accepted and drank it, not realising that the ale had been drugged. She came to and found herself wagon-bound, riding a trail alongside the river Ashaba, to be delivered to a slave galley waiting somewhere along the coast of the Sea of Fallen Stars. Fortune smiled on Ami however, as she was able to pick the crude locks of her cuffs with a sharp piece of discarded metal, and stole away under the cover of night.
Not knowing her location, she blundered through the wilderness, somehow avoiding pursuit as she skirted the borders of Mistledale. Taking shelter in what she thought was a deep cavern, she came upon a small Duergar trading post that had set up shop to do business with the Cormanthor drow - she had blundered into the Underdark.
Questioned intently by the dark dwarves, Ami was able to spin a convincing - or amusing enough tale that the Duergar decided to give her a chance. Her knifework was deft enough to prove she could take care of herself, and her rudimentary locksmithing knowledge gave her some small use. And so she was a prisoner again, albeit treated far better, and given a small stipend. She learned a little of the trading language of the Underdark, continued to keep her head down, and made herself as helpful as she was able to.
Four years later, she bartered her freedom, some patchwork leather armor, and a single curved knife with the money she'd saved, and the dwarves allowed her to leave, albeit with heavily grudging reluctance. Guessing that she would be recognised if she tried to return to Daggerdale, and not having much to return to in the first place, she instead set out toward Mistledale. There, she earned a little coin from a generous merchant that offered her a short term guard position, and used that coin to travel on one of his caravans headed up the Sword Coast. Finally free to do what she wanted with her life, she set her eyes on visiting Candlekeep and the surrounding area. For starters.
Goals: Explore, learn and understand everything she can. Make friends and allies. Get stronger in the hopes of being able to return to Daggerdale and help remove the Zhentarim forces from it.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
- Her brother Gareth is still alive, now a seargant in charge of a small militia of conscripted dalesfolk - and a devout follower of Bane. He harbors lingering resentment that Ami made him look the fool, and might be tempted to hire out mercenaries to try and bring her back for proper punishment.
- The Duergar she had been forced to work with, minor traders from a Gracklstugh clan named Axebane, were not terribly thrilled to let a human wander off with what they consider trade secrets. Potentially, they might see fit to either dishonor the deal made for her freedom, or otherwise try to pressure her into doing tasks for them.
- Ami has an (understandably) intense dislike of the Zhentarim, and slavers in general and would gladly interfere with any plot she caught wind of, provided she thought herself capable of the task.
((I don't believe there's any major lore discrepancies in the backstory, but please do correct me if there are so I can fix it.))
