Background:
Lil was raised in Waterdeep from a very young age. Her parents, a pair of adventurers, left her in the care of a trusted wizard acquaintance of theirs by the name of Celenthas for what was promised to only be a short while. But as things go in the life of adventurers, the unexpected happened, and Lil never again saw her mother or father.
Despite her loss, which at the time she was too young to truly understand, Lil thrived, serving as a constant companion for the elven wizard's half-elven daughter, Silani. Together the two of them grew into capable young women, both dreaming of one day becoming adventurers like Lil's parents. This dream, however, was not something Celenthas encouraged and once Silani was old enough, he immediately took her as his apprentice, ensuring that at least for now she would be safe from such a life, at least until she was ready. Lil, however, was not happy by this delay.
Even by human standards Lil was impatient and brash, eager to jump in before looking if it meant excitement and adventure. After almost six years of Silani's apprenticeship, Lil was bored out of her skull and used the time to develop skills of a less savory nature. She spent a great deal of time with the street gangs in the Docks Ward of the city, pulling small jobs that mostly left a stall merchant or two out of their hard earned gold for that day. But the longer she was forced to wait the more annoyed Lil became.
One night while Silani studied the scrolls her father had given her Lil snuck up behind her, expecting to surprise her friend and maybe take her mind of all the stuffy book work her father had her doing. But instead Silani was angry with Lil for interrupting her, and the two of them got into an argument. They yelled so loudly that had her father not been away on business, Lil was sure the shouting would have only lasted moments before the entire room was silenced.
'What's the bloody hard about all this that you need to spend all day in this closet when we could be out having fun?" Lil had asked, grabbing a scroll from Silani's desk and opening it up. Her friend told her to put it down, but Lil was already reading off the parchment and making more of a mess of every syllable than she could imagine.
Before her friend could stop her, the Burning Hands spell exploded forth from Lil's fingertips with more force than she could ever hope to contain even if she had the training to do so, blowing her back against the wall and knocking her unconscious.
When she awoke moments later the room was an inferno and Silani lay as nothing more than a burnt out husk on the floor and the tip of Lil's left ring finger was blow away, the remains burnt black against her pale white skin.
Unsure of what to do next, she did the one thing she could think of: she ran. She hid out in the Docks Ward, hoping to whatever gods were listening that she wouldn't be found and that by some miracle no one would discover that the fire had been her fault. But she didn't want to leave her freedom to a hope and prayer. Her best friend dead at her own hand, accident or not, Lil fled the city and stowed away on a ship to Neverwinter.
Wracked with guilt, Lil spent her time in Neverwinter finding whatever books she could on the arcane, learning languages, consuming every scrap of arcane lore she could get her hands on without being permitted into the Academy. Decades went by, and what little work she could get as a scribe had to be supplemented in more nefarious ways, falling back on old skills until she thought that just maybe she was ready. With her bag packed, she boarded a ship with what money she had and set off for Baldur's Gate.
With the new surrounding have some new friends, and before long her time in Baldur's Gate has led her to find a place to learn the art and with that a newfound devotion for the Goddess Mystra.
