Aruna Dawnseeker - Journal and Letters

Unread post by Arn »

Kythorn 20, 1354

To Aruna:

I have received word that Glenn Rakkito, paladin of Lathander and member of the Order of the Aster, has recently given his life in defense of a small village. This news brings me great sorrow, as I squired for Sir Rakkito in my youth and learned all I know from him. Faerun has lost a great man.

I imagine you understand some of my feelings, because I have learned that you were Sir Rakkito's ward in the year before his death. No doubt you saw the qualities I admired about him. The villagers Sir Rakkito saved informed me that you are now traveling for the Temple of the Morninglord in Beregost, and I trust the courier I have hired will find you without difficulty.

The villagers also informed me that you have taken Sir Rakkito's greatsword, Vigilance, into your safekeeping. I must thank you for your continued loyalty to Sir Rakkito; your care for his legacy speaks well of you. But you need not concern yourself about his blade any longer. No doubt you understand that Vigilance belongs with the Order of the Aster now.

I will be traveling to Beregost to take possession of Sir Rakkito's blade, and I look forward to meeting you there. If you wish, you will be compensated for your care of Vigilance. May Lathander's light guide you in all of your decisions.

Sincerely,

Jay Angwelle

To Sir Jay Angwelle:

I only traveled with Sir Rakkito for a year, so I can't say that I learned all I know from him, like you did. But he did show me Lathander's light, and I want to help people the way he did. That is why I took Glenn's greatsword with me.

I traveled to the Temple of the Morninglord in Beregost to find another Lathanderite teacher, but now that I am here I see many dangers threatening the Sword Coast. Goblins, undead, and devils are only a few of them.

I want to continue using Sir Rakkito's blade to protect the people of the Sword Coast. Perhaps, if you would be so kind, you would allow me to return the blade once the threats are over.

Sincerely,

Aruna Dawnseeker

Aruna:

Your wish to use Sir Rakkito's blade to protect others speaks well of you. It is hard to believe, but perhaps even a tiefling's tainted heart is capable of seeing Lathander's light. (Yes, the villagers told me what they saw during Sir Rakkito's final stand; I do not think they will ever forget the sight of a horned woman conjuring darkness out of thin air!) I can certainly imagine Sir Rakkito trying to teach even a tiefling the ways of Lathander. I always admired his optimism and belief in redemption.

Speaking openly and frankly, Sir Rakkito's blade holds great personal significance for me. As his past squire, I wish to preserve his legacy by safeguarding Vigilance. Furthermore, I am willing to make sure you are not left empty-handed. If you truly wish to protect people, then I would gladly provide you with an even stronger blade. Surely you are aware that Vigilance does not have the strongest enchantments; its usefulness is limited for you, while its importance is very deep to me. I can arm you with a weapon twice as powerful as Sir Rakkito's weapon. I hope you can see wisdom in this matter.

May Lathander's light guide you.

Sincerely,

To Jay Angwelle:

Your sarcasm is duly noted. While I have only been a follower of Lathander for a year, I know that He teaches about rebirth and renewal. I would think that these values include redemption and forgiveness; at least Sir Rakkito seemed to think so. It is unfortunate that you do not think I am worthy of such consideration.

I will be open and frank as well. I am not interested in a more powerful blade. Sir Rakkito means just as much to me as he does to you, perhaps even more. I intend to keep Vigilance and honor Sir Rakkito in my own way. I won't be handing the blade over to you.
