Rules error
Apparently there is no "written" rule for metagaming in the rules. I found this out while looking for the rule to as a question about it, but its not there..
I'm guessing it was mistakenly omitted from the rules.

Must be a mistake since people have been threatened with bans for it.

Re: Rules error
Probably the best anti-metagaming statement has been nicely summed up and said many times by Laurk:
Never give, nor ask for OOC information.
It really should just be common sense and fall under rule #1, but given abuse there probably does need to be such a simple statement prohibiting metagaming in the rules. Unfortunately there might also need to be more explicit examples of metagaming abuse since not everyone always agrees on what it is though such a simple statement is pretty clear. Some of what is written in this thread would be good. It's about as old as this incarnation of the forums themselves-- the very first thread in Tips & Tricks.
There is also a discussion of this already ongoing in the rules section.

Re: Rules error
Shouldn't need a rule about metagaming in an RP server.

Shouldn't need a warning message to tell you not to use a hair dryer while taking a shower.

Re: Rules error
If we had to make rules for the obvious, it'd end up something like this:
"Here at BGtSCC, we don't plan on being rule heavy... but we ended up that way regardless.
...
~ rule 512: Stabbing yourself with a dagger may result in injury or death.
~ rule 513: Stabbing yourself with a short sword may result in injury or death.
~ rule 514: Stabbing yourself with a long sword may result in injury or death.
~ rule 515: Stabbing yourself with a bastid sword may result in injury or death.
..."

Re: Rules error
I believe when Kelsfar and I were going over the original rules overhaul, we thought about mentioning metagaming, but opted not to. It should be obvious that it's not permitted, plus we wanted to make the rules as brief as possible since many people do NOT like reading rules, much less long lists of them.
I'm sure it could be fit in somewhere though if it's really deemed necessary. I just can't imagine anyone complaining to a DM: "I was metagaming and that person said it's not allowed, but the rules don't say anything against it!".
"~rule 525: Stabbing yourself with a dagger is forbidden unless you do so with both hands. Failure to comply with this rule will result in the loss of the dagger. To see related rules, please read rules 145, 192, 262, and 571. Exceptions to this rule can be found on page 120, paragraph 4 of the player manual."

I think the current rules are thorough enough.

Re: Rules error
Well, in my experience, people would use it as an excuse to metagame. There is a reason why so many silly warning signs exist.

Re: Rules error
I can see it from both sides. I don't think it would do any harm pointing it out though. At least a "being a role-play server, please refrain from metagaming" - asking politely can go a long way sometimes

Re: Rules error
You know... if you ever read warning labels that are too dumb to believe... Know they are there because someone was dumb enough to -actually try it-
Which is why they are -actually- there... Unfortunately the stupid masses must be taken care of until Darwinism catches up...
I read the posts here and nearly died laughing... Haven't laughed that hard in a while!

Re: Rules error
Well in the spirit of not being rule heavy, rather than add any new rule for what should really be common sense, we can simply clarify Rule #1. Underscore role play and add a short metagaming clause to it.
Change it from:
Change it from:
to:1. This is a Role Play server in the Forgotten Realms setting. Please respect the setting and...
