Hin monk build.

Unread post by Urbancat77 »

Hello.
I would like to play an hin monk, but I am terrible with builds, I'll be grateful for any suggestion, or complete build, you can suggest me.
I am not really a pvper so I am searching something for pve.

Thanks!

Monk 30 is pretty difficult to mess up... Max WIS, Intuitive Attack, Ki Step, all good. This of course is for a Fist Monk, but did you have something else in mind? A Halfling Monk would of course be relatively easy to get M25/SD5 for Epic Dodge (going for Weapon Finesse rather than Intuitive Attack), but then you miss out on Blazing Aura. HiPS + Epic Dodge along with Improved Evasion gives you pretty much all the best defensive feats in the game, but going max WIS Monk 30 (or M26/F4 or M20/DC10 or M20/F4/DC6) give you better offensive power including Blazing Aura. Going max WIS also helps your stunning fist DCs which is nice.

What kind of Monk do you want to be? It's such a naturally strong class you should really consider the type of monk and then build around that.

Well, don't laugh, I was thinking on the rp side to do something akin to the drunken style, so very fluid, actually things like improved evasion would simulate well that peculiar style. Just to give you a general idea.

What I fear is that I am really a bad builder so trying to follow a specific rp I end up gimping the mechanical side of things.
I am asking help to avoid that.

If a Fist monk is the easier path to a decent build I can adapt my rp around it.
If there is a path to emulate a style that's very fluid, all dodges and counterattacks, sure, but Ixd like to avoid my usual fate on any server oc having the most useless character around mechanically speaking.

I think Drunken Monkey is more of a combination str/dex style (as odd as that may seem)....I don't know enough to be able to translate it to a stat split, but I'd say M26/F4 or M30 might be most appropriate.

Thank you for the help!
I'll keep straight for monk 30 then. Seem less probable I can ruin it.

Last question, would be horribly stupid of me using a quarterstaff as weapon?

Strength monk with staff can work, but is likely the worst due tp lack of defense (AC). I think Steve played one and had fun with it iirc.

Steve also has an OnHit Stun DC 20 (or 30? I forget) staff to use with such a build...

On a hin you would need monkeygrip to use a staff.
Also a small race doesn't work well with dualwielding kamas, as your offhand weapon should be a tiny one to avoid an ab-malus.

fist hin http://nwn2db.com/build/?298218

Consider the damage from the staff build would be much lower and there are no epic melee staffs in any shop.

Drunken master always sounded to me like a distinctly non-lawful approach, but the PnP PRC doesn't have any alignment restrictions at all.

Would be fun to see that class, actually.

Hin monks are rather humourous and good fun to play with.
Especially when you have a mage haste one and see this little puny being hooning around the map slapping things silly. Yoda vs Dooku springs to mind.

Hinfist monks do less dmg than their medium/large race counterparts. You can see the different set of numbers in their fist damage progression column on the main table in the monk page. Clicky clicky

They make up for it by having slightly higher AC, free feat (strongheart), or +1 to saves (Lightfoot).

They are good fun :D You'll have a blast.

Challenge for the 'powerbuilders' (those who like the building aspect of the game a lot): make a Hin Monk that is better at what it does than any other race (i.e. cannot be replicated, and mechanically bested, by another race; XP penalties don't count).

Hin 20 monk / 10 assassin, WIS high with Intuitive Attack, monkey grip for quartestaff. So bleepin’ awesome.

And yes it’s a DC 30 stun staff that’s stupid wicked on this build. Gift from AC81 that keeps on giving!
