I am a very big fan of the random event/quests that we have on the server now. But the last few times I have done them I've been unable to rescue the NPC because of a couple of things out of my control.
1. After a successful diplomacy check the lead enemy moves away before coming straight back. Upon talking to the Quest NPC, the enemies all turn hostile anyway. This wouldn't be too bad a problem except...
2. All enemies ignore me and only attack the Quest NPC. I have tried buffing the NPC as well, but he simply folds under their attacks. Especially the much higher level ones in the High Moors.
Is there any way we can stop the enemies from just targeting the 20ish hp NPC? Tonight it was particularly disheartening as the lead enemy used Sanctuary and proceeded to sneak attack the now wandering in circles NPC while I slowly killed the enemy.

Re: Random Event Rescues
I'll echo this sentiment.
The work-around that I've found for now is using a Wand of Invisibility on the NPC before engaging the mobs, and then using a potion or wand of See Invis./Blindsight/True Seeing in order to talk to the NPC. Once they're part of the party, you can go into their Examine and change their AI to disable melee attacks, because otherwise they tend to get a little bit suicidal.
