Polymorph and Shapechange Weapon Attribute Transfer

Unread post by Rudolph »

It would be good to have clarity on which weapon attributes transfer to the transmuted shape: plain old elemental and physical damage seems to transfer (though not stack with the shape's own damage of the same type). I found, however, that Vampirism doesn't, nor, apparently the ability drain effects. What about Blindness, spells, etc., Massive Criticals, Extra Damage Type effects, weapon material (AS, CI, Adamantine, etc.)? What about 'vs. evil' or other typed dmg?

As the wiki says: Permanent weapon enchantments carries over to creatures who use weapons. Temporary ones are removed to avoid an exploit.
Properties are only taken from the right hand slot.

Then Vampirism or poison-like effects should transfer as they are permanent - but they don't...

Vampirism on weapons does transfer over, to forms using a melee weapon. I use it everyday on my warlock word of changing.

Well, it doesn't on my weapon-wielding Shapeshift forms. Maybe the WoC effect works differently...

Shapechange and WoC run basically the same code. What shapes does the weapon property transfer not work on for you?

Alright, I went back and tested a little. The melee Vampirism works indeed (used a +2 Vampirism sickle with the Hill Giant). I remember testing it and it not working, I think with a ranged weapon, but might have missed the effect since it was just +1 like with the cloak.

What definitely does not seem to work are effects like 'Ability Drain: CON 1d2', 'Stun', 'Disease: Filth Fever', etc. - at least I don't see any traces of them in the combat log (i.e. saving throws thrown). What I am not sure about and find hard to test are weapon material attributes (Alchemical Silver, etc. - do they stack with form weapon materials), massive criticals, and things like 'Extra Damage Type: Bludgeoning'.

On Hit abilities work, but if the weapon just shows "ability drain: whatever" it likely has a super low chance of going off, like 5% and you are not going to see it much. I learned this the hard way.

Ah. And oh no! I thought that if an on-hit effect has no specified percentage it always triggers upon hit. This makes a big difference. Do you know anything about how weapon material is handled? Would it be possible, say, to get an alchemical silver AND cold iron weapon by transforming, say, into a frost giant while wielding an AS weapon?
