A blonde young girl, that does not look to have reached her twenties yet, is sit at the tavern, alongside an armored man. The man seems to be fascinated by her. More specifically, by her purple opalescent eyes. In front of her, there is a glass of juice. She slowly reaches it and takes a sip. She then starts to talk, while drinking the juice. Her voice does not seems to come out of her mouth. It is almost as it was a kind of telepathic emulation of a voice.
“Alright, you wish to know how I became what I am today? Well, see I was born at Waterdeep, on the same day a cult of Mephistopheles attacked the city. They brought the Hellfire against the town, burning homes all over the place. My parents house were among the affected. The fire consumed the place while my mother was giving birth to me. The fire killed my daddy, harmed my mother, and deeply affected me. I became blind and mute at the day of my birth.”
“My mother spent the first 12 years of my life teaching me some words by making me touch objects while she told me the name of it. Was a hard childhood, as you can imagine. She also tried to take me to most of the temples available, so the priests of different gods would try to heal me. But none were successful. Either the gods thought I was not worth it, or they were not able to reverse the damage of the hellfire.”
“When I became twelve, my mother could not bare it anymore. She finally came up with some ideas, very radical ideas. She told me that if the gods could not heal me, then, maybe, Asmodeus, the lord of the Nine Hells, would be able to undo the hellfire damage. And if even him would fail to do so, then only Caiphon, the guiding star, would be able to help me stay alive after she had left. I guess that my mother become increasingly concerned what would be of me if she were to die.”
“So, she took me into a road trip alongside a caravan, saying we were going to visit a hideout of an Asmodeus’ cult. That was surely a not very good idea, but the truth is that we never had the chance to really face the consequence of such a radical approach. One night, while we were camped alongside the road, the caravan was attacked. Back then, I thought the attackers were bandits. Latter, I learned it were adventurers, trying to stop the caravan to reach the Asmodeus hideout. I guess their intention was good: to prevent the devil lord to receive more souls. But their method was a bit to extreme. They killed everyone on the caravan. I do not know if I would be spared, if my mother had not thrown me down a cliff that were nearby. When I reached the bottom of the cliff, I were alone at forest, far away of any road. I was blind, mute, alone, and lost. The screaming that came from the caravan was scary for me, but it became even more terrifying when the screaming stopped.”
“I thought I would die. But then, I remembered what my mother had said. That if we were to fail on finding help from Asmodeus, only Caiphon, the guiding star, could help me. So, right there, I started to mentally wish for Caiphon to guide me, to give me sight, and a way to have a useful life. And then, it happened. I thing my despair was so great that Caiphon actually felt it. Suddenly, I was able, for the first time on my life, to see. I saw the forest, the cliff, and all things that were around me. I became so happy, so enriched by a new hope, I wanted to thanks Caiphon. And then, I heard it… my own voice. I did not know how, but I was able to mentally emulate the sound of my voice. But my happiness did not last long. After a few minutes of joy, I started to listen to it. A constant cacophony of whispers on my mind. Caiphon whispers. They told me about deep secrets of the universe that were so complex I could not even start to understand. And not only the secrets were complex and horrifying, the whispers were overlapping one to another.”
“It was only after I felt asleep that things started to make sense. During my sleep, I dreamed of a purple place, a kind of a planet. On my dream, I were transported to these planet, where the sea were made of purple goo, and the land was ravished by purple fire. That planet was actually Caiphon. And there, I could hear and understand it better. Caiphon told me that I was chosen to become one of its emissaries. That I would receive knowledge and power that Caiphon itself would channel through the Far Realms to my own body. It told me I would help it fulfill the wishes of others, to help Caiphon to extend its powers to our planet.”
“Of course, I accepted the task. From that day forward I became an Emissary of Caiphon. Since then, I already helped travelers all around the sword coast. I actually spent two years at Neverwinter helping them deal with a vermin infestation on its fields. And now, I am here, at Baldur’s Gate, because the people wish for help, and Caiphon whispered me to come.”
“But what are Caiphon true intentions? Is it good, or is it evil? That is the question I would love to know how to answer. Caiphon is a star, plagued and troubled by the influence of the Eldest, a great evil from the Far Realms. Unlike other ancient beings, Caiphon actually care about what happens on Toril, even if it does not care about personal life of Toril habitants. I believe it is because the Eldest is tied to our future, and therefore Caiphon future is bound to Toril. It is hard for me to say what Caiphon really wants out of us. But it is very possible that it wish to get itself free from the plague the Eldest brought at it. I believe that Caiphon need to help us in order to help itself. But this help is not individual. It does not care for the well being of individual persons, but the actual end result of our influence on Toril’s energy. That is why most people feel betrayed by it when they rely too much on Caiphon’s blessings. Today, Caiphon is answering your wishes. Tomorrow, it maybe answering the wishes of your foes. It may save your country today, just to allow it get invaded by plagues tomorrow.”
“Caiphon is older then Toril, and older then our sphere. Older then our gods, maybe except by Ao. It is older then the concept of what if good or evil. It does not care about rules, and chaos is clearly a natural thing for it. But Caiphon communicate with me by whispering its uncomprehensive knowledge. Most of the time, I need to interpret it. So my doing may not be exact what Caiphon desires. And that is why it does have more then one emissary, I guess.”
“The fact is, to finish my story and answer your question: I try to follow Caiphon’s will, and I know that in the long run, any of our lives really matter. We will, one day, cease to exist, and most of our actions will have no consequence on the final ending of our world. But our actions have consequence here and now. So intention is of no meaning to the end result, but has meaning to our own existence. So, I like to think myself of a good person, that follows an important power and has a very important job to do. But I am no hero. My intention is to save the people, but the result of my actions may cause a very different result. As it is with everyone. We are all just part of a greater history, that is way bigger then ourselves.”
Goals: To serve Caiphon while trying to doing good to the people
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
Caiphon is actually a plagued Star, influencied by the Elder Evils. It is not clear if Caiphon is also evil, or if it is actually trying to fight the Eldest. It is very likely that no one will ever know that. Caiphon is one of the few Stars that actually care about Toril's future. But Caiphon interventions are known to have a cost on those that rely on it too much.
