Background:
Once a simple farm girl from a village near Waterdeep, Shali Menner never expected to amount to much. In truth, she didn't really care, either; so long as she was good to her fellow villagers, and so long as they were good to her, life would be fine.
It took less than a minute to completely upend her plans and expectations. In the late days of Alturiak, 1355, Shali was working inside the house when her powers first manifested: a minor, but obvious display of telekinesis that was periodically repeated (along with a few other minor effects, such as drying and rinsing spells) over the coming days. At first, her family was displeased with her sudden desire to leave home, but as they were confronted with more and more evidence of her abilities, it became clear that Shali had to leave - if not to pursue her newfound dreams of using her magic to become an adventurer and help people, then at least to learn how to control it.
If there is one constant in the young woman's life these days, it is an inexplicable tendency to get into serious trouble at almost any time. If she's not getting overrun by undead in the Gate's graveyards, she's making ill-fated voyages to Candlekeep. If she's not running for her life on a trip back from Beregost, she's running afoul of the growing instability of her magic. It remains to be seen whether she will grow out of this phase, or join the ranks of the Sword Coast's many fallen adventurers...
Goals: Help people however she can. Learn how to better utilize her magic to that end. (Currently, it's also "find out what the hell is happening to me!")
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
- Shali's family and friends are located somewhere in the vicinity of Waterdeep. She is on good terms with them, but does not expect to see them again in the foreseeable future. Her initial equipment - the backpack, red hooded cloak, tunic, a now-discarded shortstaff, and a subpar magic pouch - were provided or purchased for her in the weeks prior to her departure to Baldur's Gate.
- Shali carries an enchanted staff, formerly an ordinary Staff of Magic Missile purchased at Sorcerous Sundries. The staff has since been further enchanted using a scroll given to her by Belhagruz Odrenkh, a high-ranking member of the Thayan Enclave. (His motivations for this unusual act of charity remain a source of confusion and concern for her and her friends.) The results have thus far been largely unpredictable and worrisome; most recently, the item has spontaneously burst into flames during a conversation with Isabella Villame. (This is an ongoing plot, kicked off by a chance encounter with Belhagruz and, surprisingly, sent spiraling out of control by ADM Loki.)
- Even before the incident with her staff, Shali has recently displayed a tendency to miscast spells, or cast them unintentionally during stressful situations. For the most part, these have been various fire spells occurring when she was under a lot of pressure, but on one occasion she has managed to read a scroll of Mirror Image into a Frost Breath spell with no apparent provocation. (Somehow. Truth be told, I did that one as a joke, but it does seem to fit quite nicely into everything else that's been happening lately...)
- It has recently been discovered that one of Shali's ancestors was a brass dragon. As her draconic blood continues to awaken, it is starting to have noticeable physiological effects. How far this will go is not yet clear.
